'THE Department of Health is "closely monitoring" the emergence of new forms of psychoactive substances following the outlawing of a range of head shop drugs. Health Minister Mary Harney said a close watch was being kept on the situation after around 200 former 'legal high' drugs were banned in a clampdown on the sector. She said the Government would not hesitate to ban any harmful new drugs.

Health Minister Mary Harney said a close watch was being kept on the situation after around 200 former 'legal high' drugs were banned in a clampdown on the sector. She said the Government would not hesitate to ban any harmful new drugs.

She was responding a request from South Dublin County Council on the issue.

The Minister said the list of now-banned drugs included synthetic cannabis-type substances, BZP-related 'party pills', Mephedrone sold as 'party pills' and 'liquid ecstacy'.

"The legislation introduced in May has had a significant impact on head shops, removing the vast majority of their products from the market and as a result, a large number of head shops have closed," Ms Harney said.

"I am aware that since these substances were brought under control, others have been coming onto the market that are currently not subject to controls under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

"My department is working closely with the Department of Justice, the Gardai, the Customs Service, the Forensic Science Laboratory, the Irish Medicines Board and others to monitor closely the emergence of new psychoactive substances. I will not hesitate to seek Government approval to ban additional substances if any of them pose a risk to public health."'

I never understood how you could ban a drug for no reason whatsoever

I am not talking about meph, I am talking about analogues and the like

"well we have no fucking clue about this drug, what it does, or any of the health effects. furthermore we have no basis for making our decision - BANNED"

love it or hate it the irish seem far more "on top" of the situation than in england - where anything goes.

I asked in another thread but this one's probably more on-topic. Out of curiosity, what are head shops in Ireland still able to sell? Is it just RCs that have been clobbered or have they banned stuff like Krantom, morning glory and Cacti as well?

200? I assume she's referring to brand names, not drugs. Not surprising from a woman stupid enough she feels the need to ban BZP twice and mushrooms twice.

They can still sell salvia, kratom, LSA seeds (they rarely do) and shit such as DMAA. There's also ethcathinone which isn't particularly impressive.

Not at all, our idiotic government seems to just copy Britain. Infact, I believe this is why mushrooms were banned the second time.

DMAA? From Wikipedia...
Serious adverse effects including headache, nausea, and stroke have been reported in recreational users of these products.

They certainly know which ones to leave legal over there!

Any cacti left?

I doubt a stroke would occur from reasonable and infrequent doses. I've taken it a couple times and never had adverse effects.
I've never actually seen cacti in headshops.
