If this were the easiest way to sound convincingly smart and entertaining,
I’d rather not.
I will not feign my precious way into memorable standstills,
only to find myself in absolute detachment from tortured veracity.
If this were the easiest way to confound people,
dazzle them with practiced sleights of my hand and heart,
I’d rather not.
I will not yield to a discontinuing self on a persistent line.
If this were the easiest way to rant,
ramble,
and rage about the paltry drama my life has chosen to forge -
I’d rather not.
I will not make true what is deeply lesser than the truth,
and I will not beg for provisional assistance.
If this were the easiest way to be visible,
be seen,
be known,
I’d rather not.
I will not create lasting reflections upon a fleeting mirror,
a passing chance in life and in time.
I am putting ‘my life’ on temporary hold.
If this were the easiest way to live and let live…
…again, I’d rather not.
And so tonight I will kiss the filter.
Relieve myself of nerve and wit;
pause the seconds,
this slightest of moments.
Relive nothing, I'm not taking anything.
Not one forgotten love poem,
or some
recycled emotional landscape of hurried apologies and calculated misgivings.
Not your pride or mine.
Not the embrace we forgot to make,
not my life.
I'm not taking anything,
nothing at all.
Except of course, the sky.
Tonight, as breeze and smoke unite,
the sky is mine alone.

I quite enjoyed reading this defiant glare into what's expected, especially with the high note of freedom at the end.
