Ice scourge second only to cannabis as the destructive drug soars in popularity in the city

THE destructive drug ice has become the drug of choice after cannabis with a shocking increase in use of over 280 per cent in parts of southwest Sydney, police chiefs have revealed today.

Chief Superintendent Peter Gillam said that in his command, Liverpool Local Area Command, there were 58 detections of ice in 2010 but that soared to 221 last year — an increase of 281 per cent.

“We are now considering ice to be the drug of choice,” Mr Gillam said.

He said it had moved into number two place after cannabis with heroin right down the list after prescription drugs.

A recent two-week drink driving exercise had caught more people using ice than being over the limit, Mr Gillam said.

The local area commanders from Liverpool, Fairfield, Cabramatta and Green Valley together with Deputy Commissioner Nick Kaldas gave the federal parliamentary joint committee into law enforcement a lesson in life on the frontline as they addressed the parliamentarians in Sydney.

The committee is inquiring specifically into the use of crystal methamphetamine of which the purest and most potent is ice.

Mr Kaldas said that one of the challenges fighting the ice drug war was that it is the only illicit drug in Australia that was both imported and produced locally in substantial quantities with the outlaw motor cycle gangs leading the supply chains.

“The bikies in particular are in it up to their necks,” he said.

Mr Kaldas said statewide the use of ice had more than doubled from 22 per cent of all drugs in 2010 to 50 per cent in 2013.

But crime had gone down as ice addicts are more likely to be employed and able to afford it at a cost of up to $50 a hit — at least at first.

In Fairfield, where 18 clandestine ice labs have been shut down since 2013, LAC commander Superintendent Peter Lennon said the number of arrests for ice possession had risen from 27 in 2010/2011 to 87 in 2014/2015 — an increase of 220 per cent.

The committee is sitting today at the Liverpool Catholic Club.

It's strange that meth use doesn't seem to be a problem in the NE U.S (heroin is the problem there), but its a huge scourge in the southwest. I've never quite figured out why trafficking patterns emerged this way. I suppose there's more room for amateur meth labs in the open west and harder to conceal in more densely populated areas.

^ Let's start here, then:
There is no data that shows that meth use is up. The evidence is that arrests for, and seizures of meth are up.

Meth use could be up, but maybe they are just putting more time/money into arrests and seizures.

You can't be serious mate , or you don't live here ..... the place is flooded with ice nowadays in comparison to a few years ago .

I'd pretty much agree with you. The user base just hasn't been established in the NE either, except for small groups that get it regularly (gay comm). I lived in a few places on the EC and meth was never a thing, even in south florida (though it is farther up I think?), but now that I'm out west, it's fucking everywhere, even far out hippie places.

In my modest experience, east coast rural is pill abuse (government dependence?), while west coast rural is cannabis growing and/or meth production (anti-gov't/libertarian attitudes?).

Your subjective impression is certainly not the "data" that the article was based on.

Without more information than the article provides, I have no way to judge whether they are just putting more time/money into arrests and seizures, or whether meth use is actually higher.

And, I wasn't talking about reality - just about the article.

The National survey tells us that meth use hasn't increased in over ten years and has slightly decreased since the 90s. The only difference is that people are using crystal instead of speed and the purity has gone up immensely.

People have always taken drugs.

I live in in a rural town near a heavy industrial area , Gladstone Qld ...... for sure there is a lot more meth around nowadays , compared to a few years ago . Perhaps consumption trends change geographically as workers move in and out of areas .
For certain the demand is here , and the money to pay for it - supply and demand I guess . But truthfully , there is more around than in the past ; here anyway ....

^ subjective impressions are not something anyone can argue with. That is what you have seen (or, at least, you believe you have seen).

But hard data is worth a lot more. After all, maybe you didn't have the right connections a few years ago, maybe you were a teenager and people hid their meth from you more to protect you, etc. We don't know anything except that you are telling us about patterns you have casually (i.e. not scientifically) observed.
