The substance has helped addicts kick heroin, meth, and everything in between. Is it the trip that does the trick?

Ron Price needs his milkshake. It's 10 o'clock on a Monday morning and the bald-headed, barrel-chested former bodybuilder is shuffling around the kitchen of a posh rehab clinic in Tijuana, wearing slippers and a blue Gold's Gym T-shirt. Price had been employed as a stockbroker in New Mexico, until his training regimen left him with debilitating injuries that forced him to undergo 33 surgeries in less than a decade. His doctor prescribed Oxycontin, and Price quickly became dependent on the potent painkiller. More recently, he started snorting cocaine and chugging booze to numb the pain. Now, 53 years old and three weeks into rehab, all he wants is a milkshake and to crawl back into bed.

Clare Wilkins, the vivacious 40-year-old director of Pangea Biomedics, pops the lid of the blender to check the consistency of the concoction Price craves: peanut butter, soy milk, agave syrup, hemp protein powder, and a few scoops of chocolate-flavored Green SuperFood.

Oh, and a half-teaspoon of root bark from the tabernanthe iboga plant.

Breaks down the chemical that cures the addiction and it is non hallucinogenic. Might help the legality issue.

I'd imagine that the introspection that goes on during an ibogaine trip has alot to do with the degree of help the substance can give you.the same holds true In the alcohol and LSD studies that were done. I believe Its not so much what chemical you ingest but the powerful experience that follows

If you read the 8 page article there is a chemical they isolated that actually affects certain receptors reversing their dependence. It doesn't cause a trip. It simply works on a chemical/receptor basis. I for one can't imagine a good trip at my age. Too much to think about. Would need a great baby sitter to keep it from going bad.

I think the vision can be very enlighten for many... many dont get vision at all and still get thru the detox and stay clean.

If one is truely against vision... one can dose differently and get thru the detox without the vision... So dont let the fear of "tripping" turn you away.

I am too much of a thinker to enjoy hallucengenics. Even weed gives me crazy anxiety thinking about problems, fuck ups in the past, etc. Really gives me bad anxiety. I did LSD upteen times in the past and never really enjoyed it because the lack of control made me bug out. I can only think of one good trip I had and it was a party atmosphere, bunch of close friends I trust.

Ive heard that in a Canadian center they have a 50% success rate with Ibogaine in treating addictions. But yea you need a life altering experience to be able to quit hard drugs, and Ibogaine certainly delivers that.

"curing" an addiction requires nothing short of a miracle.

Long story short, hell no! (Not for good, I don't care about what neurochemical properties it might help through)

a metabolite, noribogaine

I don't think that was the metabolite. I don't feel like re-reading the article again but I am pretty sure that's not it.

*edit* You are correct. I was thinking of the chemical they synthesized that is supposed to act similarly.

18-MC (short for 18-methoxycoronaridine)
