I have the same attitude towards people who claim that they can get 'much higher' than the psychedelic state with meditation alone. Would they still claim that after being injected with 500mg of DMT? [I don't even know if that is safe dose. Surely it's overkill, by a factor of 10, but anyway(!): The point remains.]
I was at a party with my friends brother, who told me that he had taken a gram of MDMA. He was obviously on speed (talk, talk, talk...) - I tried it myself to confirm, being a seeker of truth. He had been swindled - drug dealing scum. Funnily enough, he didn't care: because he "felt great". £40 for a gram of crap speed -- money well spent, to him: He'd read about MDMA and finally he had 'tried it' - it was everything that he imagined it to be, and he loved everyone - until I ruined it with 'truth'! The placebo effect was seen to vanish in the space of 2 minutes (first comes denial, then blame, finally 'acceptance'!)
There is a story of some Indian meditator-type (what are they called?! Guru, maybe) who took acid with Richard Alpert and said that he felt nothing at all. It is a myth, of course, Baba Ram Das (what a name!) later admitted that he had lied, to make a point (which was wrong; and wrong of him to do it). But still.... that's life! If people only ever have small doses, they can content themselves with being a "non-visual" tripper (or a non-tripper, whichever way you view it! - I'm sure that there is a mixture of opinion, regardless, because people's egos come into the equation: some people want to say that they have had massive doses of anything and "felt nothing". I've had a massive dose of speed, and it shows (sorry!). Oh, I didn't write all that much actually. Maybe it just seemed that way due to obsessive word-rearrangement!
