I read the facts , but I am doing IV WRONG!

i dont know , maybe i should do half a bag next time

DO NOT INCREASE YOUR DOSE!

Based on what you’ve said, it seems that you’ve accidentally delivered a subcutaneous injection. When you pull back on the plunger, blood should enter the syringe.

Also, you should evacuate the air bubbles from the syringe before inserting the needle.

I am extremely curious to know exactly what you read regarding this method.

If you are administering the dose subcutaneously, you are not inserting the needle far enough. For pictures, try this link:

Scroll down to the pictures under the heading “Inserting your needle.”
The third picture (needle partially inserted) is the closest representation of what you’re doing.

That site has a wonderfully comprehensive and accurate walkthrough for administering intravenous injections. Come back if you have any other questions. :)

hello-

you are trying to hit a vein right? no one can tell you how far to stick the needle in, its different for every vein, every person. don't shoot until you get blood though or you will waste the shot.

yeah, get rid of the air bubbles before you begin to shoot. actually just read that whole harm reduction paper if you haven't, im sensing it might help you.

i would tie off and just feel the vein before you stick the needle in. feel it with your fingers, ya know. that always helps me know how big it is and how deep so i know what angle and how far to go in. it does take a little experimenting, i sure wasn't great at it the first couple times.

also when you hit a vein be extremely careful not to move the rig, you will either push through the vein or pull it out a little and miss the shot.

for me the angle all depends on what vein. in the crook of my elbow i have to go almost straight down to hit the vein. but on the tops of my hands i have to go parallel so i can hit it with out going through (those veins are small and hard to hit, i wouldn't suggest).

good luck!

Have you searched through health q & a and other drugs?

If you're not getting blood when you draw back, you're not actually in your vein. There is a high risk of developing abscesses from this.

Do you live near a needle exhcange? Is there anyone who can show you correct technique? Injecting can be very dangerous when you don't know what you're doing.

The harm reduction link is really good. Read through every chapter. It gives you the whole process in detail.

I think you should find another route of administration until you can become more familiar with the process of injecting, as well as all of the risks.

From my own experiences, I would recommend not inserting at such a slight angle. It can be decieving as you may simply be riding along the outside of the vein. Try at least 15 degrees... I generally work at that angle and give a tiny but firm poke, then carefully slide the remainder of the needle in while decreasing the surface angle. This is using short 8mm needles

I pull back and i pull back clear , no blood nothing .. But after i itch a lot , and get a big puff .. i still get hit by the drug(HEROIN) but it isnt intense at all .. i dont know , maybe i should do half a bag next time ... cuz its just weird

Ok, immediately upon reading half of your post I noticed what you were doing wrong that you didn't understand probably. As most people have pointed out you WANT there to be blood in the syringe when you pull it back. Possibly you read that you should not inject into an artery in the FAQ, which states that if you do hit an artery blood will rush into the needle...maybe you were under the impression no blood should be present, but anyways...If you do not see any blood this indicates that you are not in a vein, which will (obviously as you've learned) cause a fairly big puff/lump to form in the area. And you still feel the drug, without the wonderful rush, because it is slowly absorbed over about the next 20 minutes or so. DO NOT DO MORE TO FEEL THE EFFECTS BETTER! You are simply missing the vein, once you hit the vein you are going to be suprised and hopefully shocked that you considered doing more. Especially since you are feeling it after you miss, you're doing an adaquate amount. Just get your technique down better, preferablly find someone who has the experience to help you out.

Injecting H (or anything cooked) is a nice way to get an infection or abcess.

Also, air bubbles won't hurt you.

You seem to emphasize "anything cooked" just curious but can you say why things cooked are more likely to cause such problems? I just wondered what made it worse, pretty interesting...

I'm just going to go over the entire proceedure.

You start out with a bottle of spring water, a clean needle (preferably a 1/2-1 CC BD 29 gauge insulin syringe), a sterile q-tip right from the box, a clean spoon and an alcohol wipe or two.

First, clean your hands with the alcohol wipe.

Wipe the spoon with an alcohol wipe. Put your heroin in the spoon. Draw up how ever much water you want to use and put that in the spoon. Use the end cap from the syringe (the one on the back with the large flat end). Stir.

You do not need to heat the solution. If you do, you should NOT boil the water, just heat it up. But since you keep missing the veins you could end up damaging nerves and tissue if you're using really hot water. So I would definantly suggest you not heat the solution until you learn how to do this right.

Take a piece of the q-tip cotton and roll it into a TIGHT ball, the smaller the better but you want to make sure it's big enough that you're sucking up water from inside the cotton and the needle isn't simply going through. You do this to avoid shooting particles.

Clean the injection spot with the alcohol wipe.

Stick the needle in the cotton (being careful not to poke the needle through hitting the spoon). Draw up the water.

Hold the needle facing your body and inject at an angle. Somewhere between 20-35 degrees is good. You want it to be fairly parallel to your vein.

Stick it in deep then pull it back just slightly. Then pull the plunger back. If you're in the vein you will see a burst of blood rush into the syringe like a mushroom cloud. If you pull back and only get air or the blood doesn't rush in, you're not in the vein and you need to adjust a little bit.

Once you're in, push the plunger and inject the heroin at a medium speed. Not too slow, but not too fast.

One question I have is are you using extra long needles or short needles? You want to use the long needles.

My guess is either you're using short needles and not getting in the vein, or you're using long needles and poking all the way through on the other side.

Another thing is that if you don't have someone with you that knows how to inject, you shouldn't be injecting heroin at all. Your lack of experience could cause you to get an infection, collapse a vein, damage nerves or you may just end up overdosing.

One last thing, if you're satisfied with the highs you're getting now, USE LESS. Because the rush and highs will be far more intense if you actually manage to inject into the vein.

Well, chances are that if you're injecting heroin, coke, ect...(hell, even Benedryl) that you bought it from somebody. AND chances are that it's not a pure product and is cut with something. (i.e. it's not drawn out of a bottle/vial like morphine, nubain, ect...) If you miss a vein and inject those dirty "somethings" sub-q, you run the risk if getting an infection or an abcess.

Great reply Love in Vein :)

One thing, though. Sometimes bottled spring water contains more bacteria than tap water. Its best if you can boil water for ten minutes, and allow to cool with the lid on.

Also, needle exchanges and pharmacies in Aus (don't know about other countires) often sell or give away sterile water ampules. This is ideal, but its not always aavailable to people.

Sorry for being picky. :)

This has a good picture of a butterfly (aka winged infusion set). They are generally used when there is a large volume of liquid to be injected.

Many people who inject oral methadone (a very risky practice) use these. The flaps get taped down while the injection takes place. It allows more time to inject, and the needle is held very frimly in place.

In this guys' case, I think trying to use a butterfly would complicate his situation unecssarily.

For someone who still cant get a basic injection down correctly, a butterfly might overcomplicate the situation. The only real issue (besides sanitation) in injecting properly is getting into and staying in a vein. If you can't figure it out, practice with saline on the big veins of the inner arm, and always draw back first, if needed do this multiple times throughout the injection to know if your still in the vein. If you are in a vein, a little plume of blood should enter the syringe anyways (without drawing back), but this usually is more pronounced with larger veins. If the syringe shoots back with force, withdraw the syringe immediately, and if needed, seek medical attention. This is associated with injecting into an artery, which can be lethal. So, to start off, dont try injecting into weird places, especially your legs. If you havent done this many times before, there should be big enough veins on your inner arms, unless you are extraordinarily fat, in which I case dont suggest injecting anything.
