She'll be slamming the NPS Bill next.

Charlotte Church’s status as a prominent anti-austerity campaigner has taken another step after the singer announced she would happily pay tax at a rate of 70% if it would protect public services.

Church, who last month won praise for defending herself as a “prosecco” socialist after some media reports accused her of hypocrisy for protesting against cuts while being personally wealthy, was speaking at the launch of another anti-austerity demonstration on Thursday.

The 29-year-old was asked if she would happily pay more tax to protect services. She replied: “I have paid all my tax since I was 12 years old, and I would certainly be happy if the rate was 60% or 70%. I wouldn’t move away, I wouldn’t have an offshore account.

“That would be totally fine, for better infrastructure and public services and more of a Scandinavian model, which I see as far more progressive than the way we are, I would be absolutely fine with that.”

Wouldn't it be great if other celebrities/musicians/whatever (in conjunction with social media) started to talk about important things? Didn't they used to do that? What happened to make that stop?

Fair point and I know where you're coming from. I used to look down my nose at social media, but my eyes have been opened on that one over the past few months. It can be used as a force for change.

My point was really about how the fuck do we not have more people like Ms Church or Mr Brand talking about these things? Or maybe there are, but I don't see them.

I dunno what the hell I'm talking about any more.
 
I guess a lot of celebrities don't want to alienate their fanbase and so remain self-absorbed, vacuous a-holes - thereby keeping retention rates of beloved fans at their highest / most profitable.

They wouldn't want to actually speak their mind and potentially shatter whatever illusion people had of being personally connected to them in some way.

I don't really know what I'm talking about either felix, but thought i'd have a go :)
 
Don't want to sound cynical, but Charlotte Church hardly has much to lose at the moment - she might have seen the success of Russel Brand's activist self publicity in raising his public profile and thought 'I'll have some of that'.
 
Wow, I hadn't seen anything about this before and I was shocked. How many high profilers like her can I count on my fingers? 2 now. Just 2. Zack de la Rocha is the only other one I know. So major kudos to her. Especially with her being a musician. I know they are still celebrities but in this day and age they make pennies and dimes compared to what they used to bring in before the age of pirated media. Thanks for posting this op, its a fresh perspective compared to what we usually see from celebrities.
 
I've no doubt she believes it to some extent, but sadly I don't think she'd be quite so forthright if she was at the peak of her career - that's not necessarily her fault, the record label would keep her in check. I'm just giving my opinion as to why so few celebrities are prepared to nail their colours to the mast in this way.

Yeah it'd be much better if she was a nobody on BL (like us all) and protesting this stuff with no publicity for the cause. 8(
 
Neither do I, but someone asked why more don't do it, and I think it's because big names decide it's too risky from a PR point of view, or, more likely, their management make that decision for them.

I don't think that was a massive, forthright publicity seeker personally.

Does Charlotte Church still sell records? If not it wouldn't matter how high the tax rate was, they would only be able to tax her current yearly earnings. The house, cars and countless millions made during her teenage years would pretty safely tied up in trusts, already taxed and safe from future legislation.

I'm not necessarily against her arguments of scandanavian models ( a man is not a camel) simply pointing out how she is hardly going to force the rich to suddenly pay for the dole
