I HATE cultural ELITISM in ALL FORMS

I don't watch TV (except for foreign films and documentaries on SBS) and I think I would dislike most peoples taste in music. In fact I will bag people out about watching crap TV and listening to crap music.

This doesn't mean I think less of you as a person I just think you have crap taste.

I'm not a cultural elitist, I just don't enjoy watching crap TV and listening to crap music. I'd rather read New Scientist or some cool literature.

Once again that doesn't make me superior to you it just makes me different. I'm not going to watch crap TV and listen to awful music because I will be labelled a cultural elitist if I don't, it seriously bores the shit out of moi.

Sue me.
 
to me, that just seems like another brand of snobbishness, almost like a double bluff. And to be honest, he's in the minority - no, of course there's nothing wrong with watching 1 or 2 hours of tv a night - but thats hardly true of most of the people that watch that kind of trash.

if he had actually listened some classical music he would no doubt have some on his top 500 etc, otherwise that would be exactly the same as naming your top 500 books as works of 1950 onwards.

I compare watching tv with a diet filled with salt - namely because i have largely stopped watching tv since about october, and because my mum doesn't cook with salt anymore due to high blood pressure. I can't eat much salt anymore - food tastes the same, and my diet is healthier - i can't watch most tv because i just get bored really quickly - and i'm better for it.

I think you missed the point.

For the purposes of this discussion, what people watch or listen to is irrelevant. So is their opinion concerning what other people choose to enjoy.

People are complaining about active elitism, rather than passive. For instance...

Then as defined in this thread, you ARE in fact practicing cultural elitism.

That people have opinions is perfectly normal. That people believe their opinions carry such weight that they should call down the opinions of others is egotistic.

And if I put it right out in the air at the beginning of a conversation that I would rather choke to death than listen to what is going on on American Idol or Big Brother, someone will either out of respect change the conversational topic, or leave me alone.

It's much the same as the vacant stares compelling me to shut up when I try to talk to most people about something I may have read on indymedia.org, or watched on The Cutting Edge.

Isn't acting bored, therefore making me uncomfortable when I'm trying to talk about something I find interesting, a form of cultural elitism as defined by the terms in this thread?

Naw... simply being bored isn't enough. That's just a normal reaction to having something pushed on you that you don't care about.

Indifference is passive. Attacking the beliefs or opinions of others is active.

Well we're getting to semantics now but I would never push my opinions onto someone, it's simply what I enjoy talking about. But it seems that I don't have much in common with most people I meet day to day.

Small talk is actually an effort for me sometimes...
 
crystalcallas, i am so glad that VC Andrews fans still exist out there. Her books were so much better before she died and someone else started writing them for her .
 
Works both ways IMO. I know of many people who will ridicule you for not owning a TV, or for listening to classical music etc.

However, I must admit I believe there is a difference between quality and crap in all art forms. It may not be easy to define but there is a difference.
 
i think it's pretty easy to discern if you actually pay attention and show an interest.

Imma go drink some malt liquor that has no flavor or taste cuz imported German beer is much better, smoke some mid grade weed that really could be much danker and should have so much more crystals and red hairs on it that wont even get me high cuz it aint a designer strain like sour diesel or AK47, ugh, oh yea and imma chill out listening to hot 97 the major corporate hipho/rap/and r&b radio station in the NY/NJ area which is just SOOOO pathetic cuz all they do is play the hottest most popular songs 8( get some TASTE, lacey. also imma smoke newports I bought from the arab gas station, which are gross cuz i shoudl either roll my own or like totally not smoke cuz im just buying into what the copporations want and i shoudl totally REBEL against the grain cuz its much cooler to not smoke, and then imma play a PS2 game i bought at a MALL, a disgusting monument to over spending and too much advertistement, and do all that while wearing Enyce and Southpole clothes (ugh, brand whore) that I got from Marshalls, so embarassing, what a classless place to shop, liek cant you just buy the shit at full price instead of be so cheap? tacky tacky tacky ....i gues im just a loser. :(

Someone who goes to great pains to draw attention to the fact that they arent elitist and then tries to back this up by talking themselves up and putting others down is not only incredibly full of themselves but also a hypocrite. Having a difference of opinion about music is what makes discussion about it interesting. You dont like U2, I do. Do I care you dont like them? Hell no, doesnt bother me in the least. Just because I like something doesnt mean you have to but aruging about it is kinda fun.

Some people surround themselves with people who blindly agree with their opinions and arent capable discussing a difference of opinion without taking it personally. Baa baaa.

How is defending your particular taste in anything "elitist"? It seems that the problem here is that people have differing tastes to others who claim they are "anti elite" and they are getting their panties in a bunch about it. That is elitist in itself.
