I’ve been making a conscious effort to clean up a lot of bad weekend habits and generally feel much better for it. The unexpected part is my sleep. I assumed it would improve immediately, but instead I’m waking up ridiculously early and feeling wide awake at 4 or 5am even when I went to bed late. It’s been several weeks now. For people who made a similar lifestyle change, did your sleep get temporarily worse before settling down again?

gonna need more info, what were you taking, how long for, dosage etc.

some things effect you for longer and take longer for you to return back to baseline.

also if you're still taking the same thing you're not going to fully return back to baseline, unless you're spacing things out much more than once a week and/or reducing dosage down a lot.

lots of detail in this

Mostly alcohol, and occasionally stimulants on weekends. It had been a pretty regular pattern for a couple of years — usually Friday/Saturday rather than during the week. I’ve basically stopped both rather than just cutting the dose down.
That’s actually why the sleep thing surprised me. I expected the first week or two to be a bit weird, but I’m several weeks in now and the 4–5am waking is still happening. I can usually fall asleep fine, I just wake up way too early and feel completely alert. Was wondering if anyone else had that phase after stopping.

it might just be your body settling back down, alcohol always caused me sleep issues on days I was drinking the sleep quality was very poor, so I think I slept more on other days. I always looked at it more as needing X amount of sleep over a week and I'd kinda do it in peaks and troughs - no idea if this is a real thing or not but how I always thought of it.

if you're not feeling tired with less sleep then it's maybe more what your normal sleep pattern is, but as @MinorDetour says your body might still just be adjusting.

you could give some nootropics a try that can help, and maybe keep a sleep journal in case things don't normalise in the next month, that way you can track it and notice what's actually going on, then decide if you need to do something more about it - not saying this is the case but there are plenty of other things that can effect sleep, it might just be coincidence....
