I dont get it. Doctors make no sense blah!

wether your getting percocets irie or oxycontins makes no difference. their both a schedule 2 narcotic. it sounds like he is just an asshole. find another doc my friend. good luck.

When my back specialist decided it was time for long-acting opiates, he offered "Duragesic, MS Contin, Methadone." The reason he didn't want to prescribe percocet was because, with chronic pain, you need to maintain a steady level of the painkillar in your body. The main pharmaceutical aspect of pain management is long-lasting opiate analgesics.

Methadone is the best of these for cost and contiuity. If money and controlling your pain concern you, just take the methadone.

i agree that oral morphine sucks.Have something to do with the way it' s processed in the body and loses most of it's painkilling properties before it gets to your pain. But for chronic pain patients, time-released meds or meds with a very long half life ( like methadone) are the main means of treatment. I mean, I don't know whether I will be able to get out of bed by myself tomorrow, if my knees and shoulders, wrists and fingers will be throbbing with some pathetic pre-arthritic condition that makes hugs hurt and makes it impossible to write. I never know when one of my herniated discs is going send a lightning bolt through my ass or down my shoulder. And when it does, I sure as hell don't want to sit around waiting for a percocet to kick in.

A chronic pain patient would try the meds given to her, and be truthful about what helped and what didn't. Slow-acting drugs are for chronic pain. Fast acting drugs, like that percocet you want so badly, are for acute pain.

If the methadone works then take it and get on with things. PM is not the place to seek shorting acting opiates. AFAIK. The doc might give you something for "breakthrough pain," to take OCCASSIONALLLY when the pain is so strong it "breaks through" the methadone.

*KRIST* Um are yoo saying that percocet n oxycontin are the same thing? Cuz I thought they were different. I-dont-know.

*ANA* Now things are starting to make sense now thanks to yoo.
I COMPLETELY understand now why a pain doctor would want a steady amount of pain medication in his/her patience with chronic
pain. Percocet wouldnt be the best med for my situation seen as how its so short acting compared to the methadone I'm on now *which is working quite well too*. I am actually the same as yoo in that I really wouldnt care to be sittin around waiting for a perk to kik in when im in pain either. On my bad days when my pain is at its worse I have NO~NADA~ZIP~ZELCH~patience to be waiting around for relief. I'm sure your the same way. Sounds like your situation *ANA* isa bit worse than mine and I wish yoo well in your recovery. Also, THANKS for all the info. It all makes sense to me now why my pain doctor would rather me be on Methadone
instead of Percocet. MUCH APPRECIATED! :)

*edit*

AFAIK= As Far As I Know? I've seen this posted before n always wondered whut it meant.

Also one last question. What kinda med would be scripted for *breakthrough pain*? I'm curious. THANKS!

oxycodone is 1.5x more powerful, or at least 1x as powerful, as morphine is mg to mg.

that plus like others have said, the bad rap, (although i thought only oxyCONTIN had a bad rap, methadone, morphine, hydromorphone, and duragesic are schedule 2's also, i noticed where someone said its because percocets are sch.2) are possible reasons hes not prescribing them.

they (percocets/oxycodone) do have technically (as in medical books) have more euphoric effects than the others, also. around 90% of morphine is destroyed and inactive the first past through the liver, so hes not prescribing anything more powerful than percocet, its actually a good bit less powerful, unless you snort them. the methodone technically doesnt produce as much euphoria and the hydromorphone doesnt either, as percocet/oxycodone. in real life to some people its different but as far as medical books go... still hydromorphone is very potent at painkilling and it still depresses your CNS and all though.

im currently on the liquid oxycodone myself for severe shoulder pain, the liquid works alot stronger/faster than the pills, and to request them give a reason why you want them. apparently this works with hydrocodone too, say youve went through 3 scripts of lortab pills as an example, just say youve always had trouble swallowing pills, and that your getting sick of sometimes gagging them up or tasting them because you have trouble getting them down. dont just request the liquid and leave it at that.

they make liquid morphine too, im not sure about methadone, but it will increase the power of the drug, that way you ever get a killer headache or sprain your ankle or something you can take the prescribed dose, or since you say the methadones knocking out the pain flat out, *if* theres a liquid methadone, you can take half the prescribed amount. this saves money and possibility for addiction which it seems like your worried about. the liquid is always more expensive than even brand name so it sort of evens out. but it acts alot quicker.

Ok, first of all, you don't say something is 'one times' as powerful. That means it IS AS powerful. One times a number is that number.

Second off, that's wrong. If you're talking mg for mg in terms of analgesia, Oxy is closer to 3-4x as powerful. 20mg of Oxy is similar to 60-80mg Morphine swallowed. *shrug*

Jesus chirst, what medical books are you reading?? Just because you insert 'technically' in front of something, it doesn't make it accurate. All those other drugs ARE more powerful than Percocet, technically, that is.

*if* theres a liquid methadone

There is.

no i didnt mean technically like you were thinking but technically, as in thats what the medical books said, adding that word was redundant i realize that now.

oh yeah about the 1x thing i wasnt thinking, i didnt want to sound like a parrot parroting everything i read so i added my own estimate in there, since all studies arent perfectly accurate, with my own experience instant release morphine doesnt seem that less potent to oxycodone. anyway according to you that study wasnt no where near correct anyway.

Can you provide any links to the study, or whatever you're reffering to? I'd like to read it.

Just be glad you didn't get vioxx.
Depending on the source, origin, and type of pain, vioxx can be quite effective. Mostly muscle and arthritis pain, though. It probably wouldn't do a whole lot for acute injuries, like broken bones and such.

why the doc responded the way he did

Your doctor became suspicious when you asked for percocet (highly
addictive, in the media recently, and easier to obtain illegally than
morphine).. and since you had previously told him you didn't like morphine
or "it didn't work" sounds to him/her like you truly don't respond to it,
but sill need your opiates, the ones you "respond to" remember.
Telling him you rarely take feel good opiates can come across as
an attempt to conceal drug-seeking behavior. Asking for anything
esp. while standing your ground so to speak beginning with "oxy"
is gonna of course wind you up with bullshit methadone, because
it's "not as abusable."
