I Die Every Night

You don't own the thread ^

No one is breaking any rules. This is a forum for discussion. Not a question and answer school lesson. Go do your own research.

Gtfo.

oh your gonna turn this around on me when its my own thread? nah how about you just leave

The majority of sleep researchers do consider dreams to be mostly or entirely "noise". A lot of brain researchers also consider the effects of psychedelics to be a malfunction where as a lot of folks on BL consider trips to be meaningful & spiritual.

A number of mystics, some psychotherapists, and people by their own experience do find dreams meaningful. I think the original comment that was made about dreams not meaning anything was made with intention to be helpful. If someone was looking for just a physiological, noise explanation of dreaming they would likely not have posted in P&S. In any event lets let's respect the OP on this. In some senses OPs do own the thread, especially when they presented a personal situation as the focus.

Years ago I had a friend with bad dreams and disturbed sleep. I had read that cedar is a folk remedy for bad dreams. I filled a pillow case with cedar chips for him to sleep with (can be found @ pet sores and some garden places). His nightmares went away immediately and didn't reoccur to my knowledge. I have also heard of lavender sachets used for this purpose. Entirely anecdotal, I have no proof that such things work. You might give it a try. If it doesn't work I'll consider surrendering my witch doctor license.

There are a lot of meds that cause nightmares. Cholinergic drugs and dopamine agonists are among ones that cause extremely vivid dreams or nightmares.

Writing dream scripts is a technique some therapies use for interrupting a pattern of nightmares.

By the way I think we all have a lot of dark in our subconscious. Maybe this is about taking some ownership of your shadow. I hope its all much better soon. Even though P&S is for more whimsical or philosophical approaches to things if the nightmares are intolerable and life disrupting I'd encourage you to see a therapist or doctor.

Yeah sorry i just re-read the post my "GTFO" reply was to and completely mis-interpreted it!

Sorry benzopiate10 ;)

Dreams mean nothing......ha, what is a dream....what is nothing.......what is what....reality means nothing....etc. etc. This thread got so off track to the point of almost being lounge status.

^OK. What you dream may or may not have any relevance to real life. Sometimes they may be based around something thats going on in your life, sometimes they may be based around a feeling you have, sometimes they may be based around what you watched before you went to bed, but most of the time the "story" in which dreams are played doesn't really have any relevance to anything other than that it is a dream. Sometimes your dream will accurately portray what you are feeling at the time, other times (quite possibly most of the time) they will not.

Dream interpretations are bullshit, though. Get one book and it will say something different to the next. Who's right? No one. It's money making bullshit.

Alright lets say you were right.. What would you say when, like my original post i dream of falling to my death nightly? Why would this one dream on the ledge of a building trying to climb down, unsuccessfully falling to my death keep reoccuring? Why not switch it up if according to you they're just either white noise or 'sometimes based around a feeling'?

Whoever said dreams mean nothing: It's the definition of the word "meaning" that is unclear, which makes the statement inaccurate at best.
What does it mean for a dream to "mean" something? Do human relationships mean anything, or do they just happen, and then leave a lasting effect on us? Often times the effect is taken as the meaning, other times the motivation is taken as the meaning.
My point is it could be argued that everything is inherently meaningless, yet that doesn't affect everyone's perspective or make us feel any better about bad stuff happening, or feel any worse about good stuff happening. And it doesn't really make us care whether or not "good" and "bad" have any objective truth in them at all.
Our subjective experience is so powerful and intimate that phrases like "dreams mean nothing," while possibly true, wont work logically to resolve any lingering negative effect on the psyche.
I'd suggest just trying to use affirmations and repetitive phrases to fortify your mind against the negativity you are feeling.
By that I mean just try to tell yourself "it's just a dream" over and over until the point where you can believe it.

I really enjoyed this post... I thought tearitdown was extremely conceded and rude in his following post... you were adressing the idea and dont know who the user who posted it was.... eitherway they are just an alias for our real name and we are behind computer screens... are you that offended homie.. get a grip.

Dreams mean nothing
(almost) every time i think about one of my crazy dreams, i can easily link it clearly to something in my life

they don't give answers
but they're not nothing or totally random
in my case, dreams are crazy interpretations of real data

to the op
i often have dreams in which i am in dangerous situation or die too

however, it's always a lot of great fun
just like watching an action movie

maybe you could try to change your minde set when going to bed in order to transform these nightmare into fun dreams too

No, everything I'm talking about is not nonsensical, it is based on science and facts. fuck off.

Now now...:D
Are you not aware that you are in a philosophical subforum on one of the coolest sites on the web? To what purpose does your unwarranted attitude serve?
I'd suggest a nice psychedelic experience is what you are long overdue for, but you can't take the same mentality you displayed with me to an acid trip or thatll be disastrous.

Asking someone to define their terms is one of the most basic steps to any worthwhile philosophical discussion.
Ask Hume and he'd tell you that a dialectic based on ill defined terms is just an exercise in futility. Why are you defiant against such simple logic? It would get everyone on the same page and make the discussion more worthwhile than simply linking a wikipedia page. Which was cool and apropos, but it's not the be all end all.

Let me elaborate:

Dreams are just our brain doing very normal brain things. Dreams are just basically impulses activating some part of your brain, they are what your body does to reorganize thoughts. Dreams can often times be the personification of these thoughts. Essentially any thoughts can be conveyed in a dream. If you thought of something for a split second, it can possibly be the main focus of one of the several dreams you have in any given night. Dreams don't mean anything particularly because it's all just randomness. Death is more relevant in your dreams because you probably think about it more, and thus, when your brain is reorganizing your daily thoughts more often than other things, you dream about death. Don't let dreams about death bother you. I've had many horrible dreams about me dying. Sure, sometimes it can be really messed up, but don't let it hurt you. Worry about death when it comes knocking, understand these dreams are normal. All types of dreams are normal. Dreams have as much power as you lend to them.

You couldnt have just said that in the first place? Thats a fuckin' good objective view man, makes sense to me but i guess who will ever really know if there is meaning or not? Not until we literally crawl around a mind and figure it out

Thanks for clarifying Tear it Down.....if I have learned anything in this life is that no one has the "best" answer or the "definitive" answer.....sometimes as a species we just settle on one theory because it fits in with our time period.

I was lazy when I wrote my first post and thought it was enough for you to extrapolate a good answer lol. I can tell you for sure, though, it doesn't help to follow the musings of a popular cocaine addict (Freud[before anyone says different, I've been in his house, I've seen his coke LOL]). Anyway, hope I helped :)

Whatever dreams are it makes me afraid of what lurks beneath my conscious mind. Heh. I'm like the most unimaginative average Joe Schmoe you'd ever meet, but when I fall asleep it's like I turn into David Lynch or something.

^Well that's cool, maybe you have great untapped potential if your unconscious mind is going places that your day to day mind doesn't ever touch on. You should start writing your dreams down.
Actually, writing your dreams down, whether they're good or bad, is a great exercise as remembering dreams is really hard once any bit of waking life shows up to occupy your mind. The more dreams you remember the more adept you get at dreaming in general, and the more control you can try to exhibit in your dreams, eventually gaining lucidity.

And Tear it Down- I completely agree with that post of yours. They're only as powerful as you let them. And the reason we dream any particular dream is just a random thought fished out of your psyche on any given night.

Dunno, like i said it could be anynthing.

It might be that you used to have a fear of death? It might be you used to think of death alot. It might be that you used to watch horror films. It might mean you used to play violent games. It might be you heard about someone dying, thought about it and went to sleep.. dreaming about it.

Then maybe your body has conditioned itself to dream about it every night somehow? Maybe because you know you're going to dream about it you think about it and dream about it?

It could be none of the above. It could be all the above.
