Actress Susan Sarandon has revealed she had a passionate relationship with David Bowie – but called it off because she did not want children.

In a wide-ranging interview, in which the Oscar-winner admitted to still using drugs, she described the rock star as ‘extraordinary’ and ‘worth idolising’.

She claims the pair, both now 67, dated around the time they both worked on the 1983 British horror film The Hunger.

Speaking to entertainment website The Daily Beast, Miss Sarandon said: ‘That was a really interesting period.

‘I wasn’t supposed to have kids, and I’m the oldest of nine and had mothered all of them, so I wasn’t ever in a mode where I was looking to settle down and raise a family, so that definitely changes the gene pool you’re dipping into.’

She described the singer, who has spoken at length of his own battle with drugs, as ‘just a really interesting person, and so bright’, adding: ‘He’s a talent and a painter and … he’s great.’

Before meeting Bowie, the actress had already been married – to actor Chris Sarandon for 12 years, divorcing in 1979.

She later had a long-term relationship with Hollywood star Tim Robbins, 55, with whom she has two sons.

She also has a daughter with 55-year-old director Franco Amurri. Miss Sarandon is now believed to be dating toyboy Jonathan Bricklin, 36.

In the revealing interview, the Thelma And Louise star also spoke of her penchant for magic mushrooms and a psychedelic tea called Ayahuasca and said that if people smoked marijuana rather than drinking alcohol it would ‘make for a much more gentle world’.

She said she prefers to take drugs outside as ‘it does remind you of your space in the universe – your place in the universe – and reframe things for you. I think you can have some very profound experiences’.

Miss Sarandon admitted: ‘I’m not new to the idea of mushrooms. I don’t really like chemical things, really.
'Timothy Leary [an American academic who advocated the use of psychedelic drugs] was a friend of mine, so that acid was nice and pure, but I’m not really looking for chemicals, and I don’t like to feel speedy.

‘But I’ve done Ayahuasca and I’ve done mushrooms and things like that.’

She does have some boundaries, though, saying she would never take drugs while looking after her children because ‘you want to be prepared and not have responsibilities’.
The actress has previously argued for the legalisation of marijuana.

She has fine taste.

Good on her. Comments are pretty mixed as you would expect on the DM, some people calling her names and saying some horrible stuff, it's her life she can do what she wonts.

It's great that she's come out with this to the public.

I'd hate to nitpick, but:

There are more chemicals in mushrooms than in a dose of LSD, Susan. There are also other synthetic chemicals that aren't speedy.
