I am on Suboxone and need information to help me switch to Methadone

Hello! I am new to posting on Bluelight but I have used it as a resource for years. This is my first post. I couldn't find where to post this so hopefully someone can help me out with that. Anyway here's a little background of my use.

I have been using opiates for going on 7 years now. I am 25 years old and live in the Midwest US. The first drug that I ever did as a teenager was not pot, it wasn't alcohol... It was Oxycontin. My cousin had cancer when we were younger and he got basically whatever he wanted for the pain. We were just kids. We didn't really know that we would get addicted like this. Anyway, enough of that story.. I decided in February of 2013 that it was time for a change. I had my own place, but no car and was relying on my grandma for rides to work. I was constantly broke and spent almost every dime I could get on oxy/whatever. I had insurance through work and so I jumped on Suboxone. I went to a Neurologist in my area who put me on 2x 8mg Strips per day. Today I have less than 1x 8mg strip left, no insurance, living on a fixed income (Unemployment). I have worked it out so that I wont start withdrawing until Monday and I plan on going to my local clinic on Tuesday to try and get on Methadone. I refuse to go back to the way that I was. The past year and a half has been amazing for me. I am able to save money. I can have nice things. I can have relationships. Its great.

The clinic in question is a private clinic. Its not government funded. My family is very worried about me making this switch and has basically told me that I shouldn't do it and that I should just try and quit but at this point, I don't see that happening. I'm so afraid that once I start withdrawing that I will go right back to the same old shit. I have never been very strong willed when it comes to breaking during a w/d.

I am posting looking for information and any advice. I need to know approximately how much it costs to GET STARTED on the methadone (the initial visit, etc) and about how long I should try and stay on it before I attempt to taper off. I need to know any similarities between the dosing of methadone and suboxone. I am afraid that since I am so used to dosing 2 times per day on subs... that only dosing once per day on methadone is going to hurt.

I suppose I just need a friend that knows what I am going through and that could maybe help me out with some good helpful advice and maybe some accurate information.

Thank you all for reading and I hope someone can help!

Well as I look around the section you moved me to its a bunch of threads about how good the heroin is in different cities.... you guys dont have like a section for maintenance treatment or something?

Stay on Suboxone. Find whatever government assistance you can because methadone is going to run anywhere from 300-500 dollars a month. It's a bitch to get off of, not to mention that bupe is a much better drug for recovery.

I'd give you the money if I had it if you were to stay on bupe. I'm serious about it.

I've been on both drugs several times for years at the time, so I have a lot of experience with it, not to mention being a mod an active member of this site for 8 years.

PM me if you need to talk...

Well the problem is that I cannot be on subs without insurance and there is no government assistance that I qualify for that will help with the outrageous costs. The methadone clinic in my area is $30 for the initial visit and then $70 per week. Which is reasonable. Also, do you know about how long I realistically have to wait after I take my last dose of subs before I can take methadone?

You can take methadone anytime after bupe, but wait until you are in WD, so at least 24 hours or so before dosing. You can't take methadone before bupe though.

Good luck, read the methadone thread in this subforum to understand how some clinics operate. Your clinic may offer bupe as well. Mine does and that's how I get my bupe.

i know my clinic has an option to get dosed twice. you just get half of your base dose in the morning and half in the afternoon. at my clinic it costs me $98/week and i think it was something like $165 the first visit. make sure you are in WD before you get avaluated you want to be as sick as possible for an accurate guess on what your dose should be.

there is actually a kind of social methadone thread in this sub forum you should check out. a good amount of the "regulars" of this sub forum are on methadone as well...

edit: brutus is right about a lot of things but i think you need to be the one to decide ultimately which is best for you....methadone or suboxone? i have been on suboxone and it worked but i just like aspects of the methadone clinic that suboxone doesnt provide.

its true: methadone clinics will cost anywhere from $300-$500/month (thats a BRAND NEW REALLY NICE car note), its a bitch to get off of, but hey really so is suboxone. in the end you need to weigh out the pros and cons......do you want this and sacrifice that or do you want that and sacrifice this....it all boils down to personal preference and what exactly you want out of it and what you are willing to give up/pick up
