I’m an unrepentant hard drug user with an otherwise normal life

Criminals will always exist to kill, to steal, to try and incarcerate. They won't start looking for a 9-5 job just because drugs are easier to access. Drug addiction will still be a useful tool for these people to manipulate and harm.

Yes, criminals will always exist. And they will surely be ready to exploit whatever they can. That being said, in the 43 years (minus a couple of weeks) since the war on drugs was formally declared by a criminal of a former president, it has created a situation where (among other really fucked up things):

- All recreational "street drug" users are viewed as a minority group of "scumbags who deserve to die" by the rest of society
- The US now has ~25% of the world's prison population, ~60% of them being locked up for drug possession or trafficking, the majority of that ~60% being non-violent personal use offenders
- Over ~$1,000,000,000,000 of tax payer money has been spent/wasted on trying to reduce access to "drugs of abuse" with no significant success
- Over ~70,000 murdered Mexican civilians since 2006 due to drug cartel-related violence (who are making billions on dealing their dope to the world's biggest consumer north of the border)
- The private prison industry in the US - who forces their prisoners to work long hours for less than a dollar a day - has blossomed into the newest form of politically correct American slavery, thanks in large part to the number of people picked up on simple possession charges
- The majority of drug rehab centers and methadone clinics have also been reaping the benefits of this drug war while treating their patients like "scumbags who deserve to die, unless they do exactly as they're told by us," and, apparently that's ethical behavior on their part
- Street drug users with a record are treated like second-rate citizens for someone as benign as being busted with non-violent possession of a few grams of weed
- The DEA chief is publicly "fighting against" her superior's decision to not arrest Cannabis sativa consumers in Colorado and Washington - first, because of the children, and then secondly, because of pet dogs everywhere?!
- Much of law enforcement rewards their officers for drug busts, regardless of whether the alleged crime was possession or more.
- Much of law enforcement employs a quota system, which officers are "encouraged" to meet by busting anyone they can on drug charges. They must be exploiting their "right" to seize the assets (aka ruin another life, or two, or more) of their targets.
- Drugs are cheaper, purer, and more available than ever in general

Fuck the status quo. 4+ decades of picking on a minority because they'd rather not lick their curiosity or wounds with booze (which is more of a gateway drug than weed will ever be) and/or tobacco (which kills more second-hand smokers every year in the US than all street drug deaths combined) should be the real crime. And fuck the pigs who desperately prey on anyone they can to meet their monthly quotas (and earn some extra drug money "the legal way" on the side). Fucked up country.

Drug addicts and criminals, huh?

Haha. Yes.

I'm trying to decide if according to OTW I fit into the group of people who should be "allowed" to do drugs or not.

If someone wants to do drugs, they will. Regardless of legality. Similarly, if someone is uninterested, making the drugs legal will probably not change their feelings about it. That's my two cents...
I don't know enough about you to say. It also depends on your reactions to particular drugs I guess. I'm not putting my hand up to make the decision but will happily judge you fairly or not, on how I see your drug use affects me.

^^ Still can't believe fucking pinocchio was persuaded by a massive polydrug "abuser" (is that not what he was? 10+ drugs found in his system after death) to be granted a Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs badge. Edit - I should add that the massive polydrug "abuser" was also a very talented artist IMO, and I wish he was still around to be honest.

Busty, you're a fool, and not even a funny one.

Nixon was a slimy alcoholic war criminal. Elvis was just another rich white creep.
Fuck the status quo.

Elvis was just another rich white creep.

I do not agree with this.. I have to track down the story.. but really without any reserve I think that good white people are the least racist beings on the planet.. so done with the double standard.. any complaints can be sent my junk mail marked do not bother reading cause it nonsense. In general, never met a more, double standard, racist person than a victim for fifty years, have all the excuses in the world.....

And if you think im a racist your wrong. everyone makes their own fate, period. People no matter what are held to their actions.

My view is that if you can hold your shit together and use drugs responsibly they only enhance your life. Not everyone can do this but it's totally possible. My problem drugs are alcohol and opioids but I am well able to use the vast array of other drugs with little or no ill effect. You learn to do so when you've been taking drugs for 20 years(in my specific case).

I applaud this article. The points she raised are very well articulated. Good job!

Sorry space:).. I will track down this story though... has to do with with Elvis stopping on a way home from a show in full gear to stop a woman being beat up by some guy in madtown.. he may have been a racist fuck.. and i wish times were different now... it starts with us.

But look at the point your case makes - the problem is that it doesn't matter how many drugs you can handle responsibly, it only takes that special chemical to make everything go to shit. I'd probably be one of those 'functional users' right now (relatively speaking, I am a 24 year old rave scene casualty) if some back trouble at the tender age of 19 hadn't started me gobbling otc codeine/paracetemol pills. Then the internet led to CWE and BAM - 2 years later I'm shooting oxys and morphine.

The author of this article might continue her ''hard drug'' weekend sessions for 15 years until someone offers her a bag of, say, ketamine, with her usual purchase. She likes it even more than usual, then the same song and dance ensues and 5 years later she's having her bladder chopped up by a surgeon.

Or maybe she gets to 35, or 45, and the thrill of getting away with it isn't enough anymore and she can no longer pretend she's doing something cool and edgy which her unbearably surban-living-office-job life tolerable, so she orders some insulin needles off ebay, or goes onto youtube to find a video which demonstrates the construction of a crack pipe, and down, down she goes.

My point is that someone hasn't lived as a casual drug user until they've died as a casual drug user. Nobody goes into this thinking they'll become an addict, this woman is still just another ''it won't happen to me'' case.

im not even sure what you guys are arguing over here I just forgot I posted that 80s song on the first page

I never had a problem driving on drugs until I nodded out behind the wheel after taking heroin for the first time after a 3 month hiatus. idk which group thatd put me under, but it wouldnt change much of anything if I suddenly became a "problem druggie" because of it. driving on heroin is actually pretty relaxing I just took it too far

^ don't worry, it's just part of OTW's trip to try and dictate who should and who shouldn't be allowed to use drugs.
No arguing, I just like taking the piss out of elvis for some reason.

I dont even care about who is trying to get me to not use drugs now youre saying drug users are turning on each other?

I see what he's saying, but at the same time id probably be better at talking to people on drugs then him so if you could just like never take drugs again so you stop giving us pro drug users a bad name thaannkkks

Of course getting wrapped up in drugs can be an awful experience, but as for the life experiences involved? I'd do it all over again, for sure!

No arguing, I just like taking the piss out of elvis for some reason.

Perhaps a guy who died from a drug overdose is not exactly the best example of someone who can handle their drug use

But...it was all legally prescribed to him. Not a street drug, or 70s "research chemical" in sight.

I thought he died on the toilet from cardiac arrest trying to push out one of those King-sized constipated turds.

Either way it just goes to show what crap thou speaketh.

^Pfft. What a load of self-absorbed, arrogant twaddle.

You're talking about decriminalisation (Portugal) which is flawed (as manufacture and supply is illegal and unregulated - thus still run by underground syndicates and the like. "Criminals" and black markets still benefit; only one side of the coin).

Full legalisation is where it's at.

Do you have any evidence that legalisation means more people are exposed to drugs?
This is a very naive statement, as legalisation could - and should - mean regulation and allow a more sophisticated culture of use and real drug education to develop.

I don't care what "quality drugs" the bourgeois people from "your world" (ha) can acquire.

Solipsistic attitudes like that are just as fucking "criminal" if you ask me.

If you want to think about addiction being used to control people, cast a glance at the medical establishment's record over the years with medication for people with depression, insomnia, various other common problems; prescribed all manner of addictive, harmful chemicals. By doctors, psychiatrists, whoever.
"They" have 9-5 jobs.
....as if that is the measure of a good human being, right? Absolute nonsense.

Sorry there but you cant scream and yell, along with immature name calling, for facts and proof when you yourself give no proof or evidence supporting your statements. now that is nonsense.

Who's screaming?
What evidence do you require?

First paragraph (about Portugal) - I support my comment regarding decriminalisation vs legalisation by mentioning that "criminals" still profit from the drug trade, thus it is not the ideal leglislative platform to work towards.

As for the bit about medications - are you aware of how many widely prescribed, popular meds have been ultimately proven worthless, dangerous, or not worth the risk - and thus taken off the market?
I am not going to go searching for some journal article to back this up because of some trollish elitist remarks some guy made.
It's a well established fact that 'Big Pharma' is a fairly unethical, profit-driven industry.

I don't do immature name calling, but I can start if it'd make you feel better.

Yeah, well I'm a really good driver drunk, so let me just assemble a bunch of anecdotal reasons why I should be allowed to do it.

Heh well said.

The person in the article is just kidding themselves if they think they can use hard drugs and not get addicted to them at all, or abuse them.
