Hydroxyzine legality and safety

I recently heard that hydroxyzine can be an effective anti-anxiety drug and was trying to find out whether or not it is legal to purchase without a prescription but couldn't find much clear information.

Wikipedia said that most of the time hydroxyzine preparations require a prescription but that vague "most of the time" phrase makes me wonder whether or not it can in effect be purchase legally without prescription.

Also, what is the relative safety of using this stuff if you don't know much about it?

I'd heard that it was relatively safe, is that true?

Can it be combined with SSRIs?

Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hydroxyzine sucks as an anxylotic in my opinion. I went to the ER last year for a panic attack and breathing problems they iv'd me ativan which helped greatly and I told them how I have everyday issues with anxiety and afterwards sent me home with a script for hydroxyzine which didn't help at all. It's pretty much a stronger version of benadryl

RX only but not a controlled substance, so it's pretty easy to obtain online if one were so inclined.

For practical antihistamine purposes such as nausea relief and potentiation it's pretty popular. It's just not very good as an anxiolytic, though. For legal, easily obtainable anxiolytics, kratom is much better IMO. Kratom is potentially addictive but any effective anxiolytic drug will be potentially addictive, there's just no way around that fact in my opinion.

Yes, I already know how much Kratom helps for my own anxiety and depression, I just don't want to get addicted so I don't take it more than 2-3 days a week.

But yeah, most things that are effective for anxiety often have addictive potential, though some things like SSRIs can be effective overall for certain types of anxiety.

It would be great if I could find another drug or 2 that are equally as safe as Kratom to mix and match on off days I don't take Kratom, but I probably will not get into that kind of thing for fear of addiction to anything else.

I never needed to even consider this kind of thing before I was cut off from my Klonopin supply...

I'm still kind of on the look out for other relativelely safe, less addictive drugs that could be helpful for both anxiety and depression however, so if anyone has any other ideas I'm interested.

Another I've heard of that is not well understood is Prolintane (not for anxiety really but for depression).

I still don't think I'd risk taking it though as I prefer to play it safe(r) with this stuff.

i found hydroxyzine to be ineffective whilst i was in an extremely heightened/panic mode, but its good for managing lower levels of stress over a protracted period of time.
i believe it is Rx only.

It's prob the best non benzo for anxiety. Doctors don't prescribe me benzos cause I tend to go a little crazy lol so this is what I've been taking 50 mgs twice daily. Not great for really bad anxiety but pretty good for mild anxiety. I don't have a choice though so I just have to deal with what I get. Lol but yeah you need a rx to get it legally lol

I wouldn't bother with hydroxyzine, does it do something yes..... but barely. I'd say it's a mild mild sedative at best, but definitely not an anxiolytic.

I have some in my medicine cabinet that was bought otc, never knew it had anxiolytic properties. I've only used it to quell the opiate itch when I didn't want the added sedation of benadryl. I have never felt any anxiolytic effect from it at low doses.

There's a certain select group of people who seem to get a lot more out of hydroxyzine than others. It's certainly no benzo but it's a good mild sedative.

I found hydroxyzine to be a mild but decent anxiolytic. It's nothing like a GABA drug but enough to quell certain aspects of generalized anxiety. It won't do much in times of panic or severe anxiety but IME it does take the edge off (sometimes). I'd ask your doctor for some Myco, it's an incredibly easy script to get being that it has no abuse potential. I found it very sedating for the first few doses though. For this reason I doubt it will do much good in social situations.

Hydroxyzine actually makes an excellent night time sleep aid (better than diphenhydramine) for those reasons - it's sedating, a mild calming agent, and it doesn't induce RLS like diphenhydramine.

We don't technically do sourcing of any sort, but ask your pharmacist if it can be bought over the counter, or ask your doctor about getting a prescription. Hydroxyzine is actually a good first line therapy for anxiety and most doctors would jump and run to write you a script if you were trying it instead of benzos.

As far as I know hydroxyzine is OK to combine with other drugs like SSRIs. It is a mild serotonin antagonist (blocks effects of serotonin) on a few select receptors associated with anxiety (like 5ht2c). It doesn't release serotonin or activate receptors very strongly. In fact its primary activity is as an antihistamine.

You should really ask your doctor :)
