Hydroxyzine injections

I have bad allergies and bad stomach problems. The most effective antihistamine I've found is hydroxyzine, but taking it makes my stomach feel like I swallowed an ember. In fact, I get nasty stomach problems or worse from all antihistamines.

Hydroxyzine can be given as an IM injection. I want to talk to my doctor about possibly giving myself injections, either regularly or whenever things get bad. (And by "bad" I mean swelling limbs or trouble breathing.) Before I do that, I want some honest information on the risks and benefits.

I know it has to be IM, because it can damage veins. Is it likely to cause tissue damage from being given IM? What are the long-term effects of regular injections?

Hydroxyzine taken in anyform carries a risk of developing Tardive Dyskenesia, a neuro-muscular condition that can be permanent. I also would wonder if it would cause an upregulation of histamine receptors which would cause tolerance to the drug and possibly rebound allergies? It is also the worst antihistamine for suifferers of Restless Legs and PLMD. Antihistamines are also hard on your cardiovascular system even when taken orally.

Thanks for the replies. Cortico-steriods have well-known dangerous side effects, not going there unless it really is an emergency.

I'm comfortable with the risks of taking hydroxyzine orally (other than the stomach issue:( ) and my doctor seems to think it is reasonably safe. I'm just trying to figure out how much more dangerous the injections are.

Because, after all, chronic asthma does have hazards of its own...

hydroxyzine comes in two forms Hydroxyzine pamoate which is sold as vistoril and hydroxyzine hydrochloride and only the HCL version is water soluble.
