Opioids Hydromorph Contin vs Morphine Contin??

Hello,
I am on Hydromorph Contin 36 mg three times per day. Would morphine in equivalent dosages be much different via oral route. I have no intention to iv any drug but am curious the best opiate for oral use. I have read that Hydromorphone is not well distributed using oral administration so my question is what could I realistically ask my Dr for should I wish to switch. Any advice would be appreciated. I should mention my Dr does not want me taking Oxycodone and I admit I agree with her reasoning.

Oral morphine bioavailability is crap, 10% or thereabouts.

For your purposes, the bioavailabilty really isn't terribly important

If it works well, stick with it. If you're unhappy with the pain relief, talk to your doc about changing

She knows I'd love the stuff and go wild. She wants me to feel well but not too well. I think I'm lucky with the 36 hydromorph 3 times a day. Perhaps I'll leave it alone

If your satisfied with the pain relief your getting just leave it alone, oral morphine is garbage. If your not getting enough pain releif, ask about fent patchs maybe

Jeeze at 36mgs of hydromorphone 3x a day there is nothing else you could really get to help you out. Thats a damn high dose. The only other thing might work would be fentanyl patches.

I would say get on the patch only if you plan not to get off of it......it truely is a life saver pain wise people use it who arent in pain to get high but its not a euphoric drug (this doesnt stop people from abusing it). it truely is the best thing ive EVER used to take the pain away and I have tried about every drug on the market. Someone at your high level of dosing I would say try and get oxycontin or get on the patch or bette yet if you are comfortable stay with what you have as long as you can.

not to act like i know more then your doctor cuz i assure i dont but that is just plain stupid to say 108mg of hydromorphone a day is better then some amount of oxycodone

and to say that oxycodone would turn you into an addict (<--wasnt said but was what i got from sayin you would go wild on them) and that hydromorphone doesnt have the ability to turn you into an addict is just stupid

I am already an addict and with a high tolerance as well. My intentions although innocent still have me addicted to opiates. I am tending against the oxy as I know how that stuff affects me. It speeds me up and makes me feel indestructable. I would for sure get into trouble with oxy's. Regardless how much Hydromorph I may take I find I level out at the same point. In otherwords if I take 18 mgs of Hydro or I take 36 mg I find the experience the same but the 36 mg dose will last 8 hrs where 18 mg may only last 5 hours. As for the feeling I get it is the same regardless medium or meduium high doses.I started with 12 mg twice a day. Went to 24 mg three times a day quickly and finally after 24 mg 3 times I am at 36 three times which does cover me most of a 24 hour period. Mornings are a kind of a hell for me but I'm OK.

The patch works well for me at 200 mcgs. It was a dose cut but worth the exercise. I kicked dexedrine and valium in a week. I'm almost ready to start cutting down the fentanyl. I'm excited. I'm also scared.

Hi mitchb,

When you say "in equivalent dosages" you need to take into account the route of administration so I don't really understand your question. If you take 100mg orally of hydromorphone every day you would need something like 500mg of morphine orally everyday. Neither is inherently better for oral consumption? The bioavailabilities of both are poor orally and are about 5:1 and 4:1 for hydromorphone and morphine respectively.
