I'm hopefully doing some work experience in a Human Resources department.

I'm just trying to get prepared / gather a bit of knowledge before I do. I have a HR textbook from a class I took a couple of years ago which I will probably look through. Anyone got any good sources for reading on / getting a general idea of the area?

Also, any general advice or experiences with the kind of work.

This probably comes from the "us vs. them" mentality. Depending on the company, the HR worker is kinda like a manager and has the authority to tell regular employees what to do. I've also worked at companies where the HR person had no real authority and all they did was hire people. I guess it all depends.

Either way, most HR people I've met seemed pretty nice.

As for the OP, I'm not completely sure but I think you have the option of getting a Master's in HR (if you already have a Bachelor's) or to get some sort of HR certificate, which is kinda like an Associate's degree.
 
I used to work in HR (as a manager) ... And although I LOVE it, it is really hard to
make friends lol (everyone you speak to thinks everything is being documented!). That being said, it may depend slightly on where you will be working in the department (i.e., benefits vs employee relations).

Jerry Atrick is correct ... You can get a bachelors, masters, or a certificate. A friend of mine has been working in HR for 10 years and just went back to school for her bachelors because you definitely need a degree to get ahead. There are soooo many different aspects to HR (training and development, organizational learning, compensation, etc).
