Opium poppy pods contain opiates such as thebaine, papaverine and noscapine and I was wondering how toxic these alkaloids are in recreational doses of poppy pod tea?

edit: can a mod correct the title please?

Obviously they aren't to toxic in recreational doses because I have had my share of Poppy pods and so have tons of other people and there have never been any toxicity issues. HOWEVER... if you take more than a recreational dose I'd wager your going to have some issues... like being 6 feet under.

I think one is relitively safe with poppy pods if they use them responsibly!!!!
rpg

Their not toxic. Thebaine is used to make numerous pharmaceuticals. Theres more alkaloids than what you listed, like codeine and morphine. You'll be fine.

Your regular papaver somniferum pods you shouldn't have a problem with the other alkaloids. There may be certain pods though that contain higher levels of thebaine which may cause a problem.

Here in Oz there are a lot of poppy fields in the state of Tasmania, and a lot of farmers grow high-thebaine content plants specifically for pharmaceutical companies (as Will said they are used to synth some medications). Ingesting a lot of thebaine can make you feel sick and cause convulsions.

i have the feeling that the some of the pods sold for arts and crafts are possibly strains that contain a higher ratio of morphine/codeine/thebaine to nasty stuff.

kinda like what Mr Blonde is saying. Arts and craft pods might have been grown as pharmaceutical use and just been surplus or diverted. just a guess though

It had to be a greenlighter.... Dude use the fucking search engine
or UTFSE there are many poppy pod threads that will answere your one question... or any other questions you may have.... Read the Rules!!!

You can use the search engine for any question, this is why we have bluelight. This way we can ask questions that may save our life. And seriously who reads the rules? U need to lay back n get highed up my friend.

Very True I Agree With You Bluelight Does Save Lives But You Dont Have To Make A New Thread Over Stuff That Has Been Posted For Many Times....

Ahem, all the alkaloids found in pods are also found in opium. Opium and poppy pods have been consumed by humans going on probably 10 thousand years, no toxicity issues have been noticed besides the obvious danger of respiratory depression in high doses.

If there was a hidden toxic danger with this plant it would have been discovered by now.

The biggest toxic threat to pod tea users (aside from the obvious overdose) is the fact that some growers might be spraying their crops with chemicals to promote harvest (pesticides and what have you), and you the consumer end up ingesting them when you drink that vile tasting sludge down for kicks.

Being that pod tea is a relatively new trend, it's possible that this fun little fact might have some consequences years down the road on those who drink gallons of this stuff every month.

I think there was actually a thread/post somewhere here about this.

Never actually thought about that and most poppy come from across seas where the pesticides like DDT are still used.....

I never knew thebaine was toxic. How high does the thebaine have to be in a pod to be toxic?

Thats true but all vendors of pods know what their real market is, and by extension the wholesalers and farms and growers. So it would really be against their self interest to use anything that will sicken someone. Also I think poppy plants are pretty pest resistant overall.

Its always a risk you take buying consumable produce, a lot of organic farmers markets with small scale growers rely totally on the honor system.

Just like with the fact a drug dealer could cut the product with something toxic, it happens but its rare since it doesn't make any logical sense.

It would be hard to reach a toxic dose off of normal pods, toxic as in dangerous. Before you would be worrying about the thebaine you'd be worrying about the morphine!

I cant find any literature on thebain levels and toxicity its just studies on the effects of morphine durring pregnancy and how neural tube deffects do occur due to thebain...

In this thread someone worked out that to reach a dose of thebaine that produced convulsions in lab animals one would have to consume 1 kilogram of pod material, and in the process would get many times over a fatal dose of morphine for a naive user.

Thebaine acts as a CNS stimulant, so its counteracted to some extent by the morphine too.

Not very efficiently, thebaine acts as an allosteric antagonist at strychnine sensitive glycine receptors.

O man, Pod tea is NOT relatively new. They used to serve it at funerals and stuff like irish guys do wakes. The first pod tea arrest happened around 1915 in oregon by some immigrant. If anything, pesticides are relatively new.
