How to turn a regular pill into a slow release version?

Cartesian theater.
I have a bottle of caffeine pills, just regular old, mashed together caffeine powder, not capsules.
Without diluting the effect, how can get them to dissolve slower in my belly?

I'm thinking something like adding a layer to them, but what? Honey?
Sounds messy. And it may just be like swallowing a candy,
not that there's anything wrong with that, I guess.

Also, don't want it to be so slow... it's out the other end by the time it dissolves.:\

Any ideas?
Thanks.

P.S.
The whole 'impetus' for this is my dwindling bank account
and love of coffee and energy drinks, which I'm told is
basically sparkling apple cider and caffeine + extras.

cut up the pills

what are you talking about? that will do the OPPOSITE of what the OP wants.

Sorry OP, theres no way to do that. the best you could do is cut the pills into fourths, and instead of taking the whole thing at once, just take one fourth of the pill every couple hours?

sorry I couldn't be of more help, but there's not really any way to do what you are asking

Yep. I believe extended-release caffeine pills are available but the best method is to cut the pills into smaller pieces and then re-dose every 2-4 hours as needed.

what the fuck. why did you suggest the exact same thing then?

I think there has been a miscommunication about cutting the pill up to increase absorption vs cutting it up and taking it bit at a time. Everyone has indeed suggested the same thing :)

Have any OTC meds that have thick capsuls that you could toss out whats in them and pop them into the capsuls? I mean is may not slow the release once the capsul dissolves, but it would give you ample time to drink a few glasses of water or milk and possibly eat something which taking meds in a full stomach will help to slow the release. The other option that
what about mixing w/ sweedish fish. that's really just edible wax.
or cellulose?
lazylazyjoe gave was pretty ingenious which would be to melt down some sweedish fish or the gummy of your choice and mixing the crushed powder with that, then letting it solidify again. The only problem that I could think of from that would be at what point would the gummies start to break down, meaning where in the digestive tract. Some medications are better absorbed in different areas of the digestive tract hence the reason for some of the different coatings or different capsul wall thinknesses or composition. I think it might be a little bit of trial and error, but atleast you now have some ideas to try. GL! Let us know what you finally did and how well it worked, I know I would be interested!

Peace!

I would either cut up the tablets as has been suggested, or take it on a full stomach to delay the absorption.

This has to do with whether the drug is ionized or not at a certain pH level (most of the time). Drugs cross cell membranes better when they are non-ionized; in brief, drugs that have an acidic pKa are better absorbed in the acidic stomach environment, drugs with a more basic pKa are better absorbed later on in the GI tract. Caffeine though is basically non-ionized at all pH levels, so if there is nothing physically dampening absorption (e.g. food) then it will absorb fairly well either in the stomach or further on.

I think the simplest answer (cutting / rationing) is probably best.
And for some reason, went right over my head.

Taking with food may keep some of the precious, precious caffeine from being absorbed, true?

I was thinking something like, spraying them with some culinary spray-can concoction
that would blah blah blah blah, but, again... just cutting them up and rationing seems
...easy, simpler, etc etc. Sorry for wasting your time. Thanks, though.

It was actually a great question as it spurred some great answers that actually were more interesting then the question but could not have been given with out such a question. No question is a waste of time, unless its a question that has been answered many times before. Thats what a lot of us are here for, to help answer peoples questions and to live, learn, ask, learn... :)
