Hi everyone,

Iv'e searched everywhere for an answer to my question, but found nothing. I recently was prescribed Lamictal (1. 25mg in the am, 1. 25mg in the pm)and Abilify (1. 2mg in the pm) for mood swings. I began taking it, and a few weeks later was also prescribed Adderall (1. 20mg when needed) to increase my focus while studying. I have taken adderall before, so I know what it feels it when taken randomly. When I took my adderall, it didn't do a single thing to me. I looked online and people said that lamictal kills the effects of adderall, which made sense. I called my doctor and told her, and she said to stop taking the lamictal and continue the others. I stopped taking both the lamictal and the abilify because I wanted the adderall to work. I have now been taking it 2 days a week to study, and preloading with 500mg of magnesium, to help with my tolerance gain, which seems to be working.

Anyways, I want to get back on the lamictal and abilify because I really need help with my mood swings, and I want to see if they work. I wasn't on them long enough to receive the effects of them when I started. My question is, is there a way to start back up on the lamictal and abilify and just not take them on the days I want to take adderall, so I will be able to feel the adderall? Are these drugs that constantly stay I your system and I would need to be off them for a few days to feel the effects of adderall? Or are they drugs that just work when you take them, and will wear off, giving adderall an opportunity to do its magic after 12 hours or so?
It's a bummer because the adderall actually helps a lot with my mood swings, but only when it's taken randomly and not consecutively, day after day, due to the rapid tolerance build up it has.
I want to be able to receive the effects of both medicines, but I'm not sure that's possible with my mix. :(

Anything helps!!!!!

Thank you! :)

It's hard to say, seemingly none of the meds have interactions, but if I were to make a guest, the abilify is inhibiting getting any effects from adderall. Lamictal acts in a totally different way than amphetamine and should not cause problems. However abilify is probably filling up the dopamine receptors leaving no receptors empty for the dopamine increase amphetamine causes.

If you want to feel and be on adderall, don't take abilify
If you want to be on abilify, then don't take addy.

If you take then together, you could get dopamine psychosis from the increase of dopamine addy causes and the agonist powers of abilify to bind amphetamines.

Litterally abilify and addy contradict each other, like starbursts lol or like exercising everyday but eating greasy fat fast foods.

Your doctor sounds like he /she needs to go back to school or learn how to use google.

The effects on medial prefrontal dopamine release from abilify in conjuncture with a stimulant can be of benefit to many ADHD patients. Most users report that abilify has no negative impact on stimulants, unlike other antipsychotics.

To single out which drug is causing your adderall not to work, use the proccess of elimination.

Add the lamictal to your regimen and see if it interrupts the aderrall. If that's ruled out then try the abilify and adderall and if that's not the cause it leaves the combination of all three drugs responsible for disallowing you any clinical benefit from the adderall.

With shrinks that prefer poly-pharma use its very important you work very closely with them to find something suitable. It's kind of like cooking where sometimes you need to tinker with the ingredients to get your dish correctly.

I take more or less this combination (200 mg lamotrigine + 10 mg Abilify at night, 20 mg dextroamphetamine sulfate sublingually in the morning) and haven't had any problems. Judging by your dose of lamotrigine, it sounds like you were on week 2 of the titration period when you quit. You may want to give it another chance, up the dose more slowly, and let your body adjust to it, although I have no idea why it would interact with the Adderall. Then again, no-one knows why lamotrigine works in the first place, so any opinion you get will be an educated guess at best.

Oh, and lamotrigine is one that you can't take a high dose of here and there. It can cause Steven-Johnson Syndrome, which can progress into Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (worse than it sounds), which is why you always start at a small dose and work your way up, even if you've been on it before.

Thanks everyone for your input. My main question is, when you say "take/don't take them together" does that mean taking them at all together, like in the same week, or taking them just at the same time, like same day. Or in other words, is taking one med one day and another the next considered "taking them together"?

Thank you!

And I want to try and test them out to see what works for me, but I just hate wasting the adderall! 8)
