HOW TO QUIT SMOKING ~ Mega Thread

^ Quitting cigs is definitely not easy! I found it easier to quit heroin than nicotine.

Just take it one day at a time--Find other things to fill the time, avoid your "triggers" so to speak. Read the other six pages of the thread for other awesome tips. ;)

i was having a perpetual allergic reaction, and i was convinced the cause was smoking. i didnt know it was an allergic reaction. i switched to snuff and felt better... the kind you snuff into the nostrils. it was such a hit. first time i did it felt like a real "drug" effect. i replaced smoking with that- immediately, and sometime later quit smoking marijuana (or was it before? i think later.). i found out sometime later that i was allergic to milk. quit drinking it and felt/noticed significant improvements. this is potentially a pretty detailed entry... but i quit tobacco completely on april fools day 2010.

i quit tobacco, but i've on my way made awareness of another, deeper sickness. i'm glad i recognized it.
not sure if it can help others- the suggestion of switching to snuff, based on my account, because my reasoning through this process might be more immediate than many's, pertaining to allergies.

^ Glad to hear you've stopped smoking, though I don't know how healthy snuff is for your nasal passages! Aren't you supposed to put that stuff under your lip?

no, that's another form. this is a dry powder.

another thing that got into my head around the quitting was that i wanted my hands free. snuff allowed this, and training for different behavior. since it just took a quick breath in through the nostril(s) i always had my hands free, again. this is a really hard part of it.. quitting.. i think. ...the "oral fixation". the snuff provided a lot of nicotine, which allowed me to overcome, perhaps... the way out was through.

napoleon used it. apparently, as referenced here in this link, commoners in england would smoke more commonly, and the "elite" would use snuff.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snuff

i remember reading something about it saying if there were much of a risk, you should have heard about people losing noses more often. most of the snuff if used properly stays in the front of the nostrils. this is likely where cancer would form.

my nose felt hard.

Yeah, I'd be pretty leery about leaving that stuff in your nose. Not to mention that anything put up there that doesn't belong has the potential to put a hole in your nose, not to mention block up stuff and lead down the road towards cancer.

While I understand the oral fixation thing completely, I still say if you want to be done with smoking, be done with smoking. It can be done with a bit of will power. It doesn't happen over night either--Took me about six months before I didn't want a cig. every time I smelled one. Took me about eight months before the smell started to nauseate me.

I'm 23. I've been a social smoker since I was 17. I used to smoke about a deck during a night out on the weekend, and close to another deck if I went out a second night. And I'd smoke a few cigarettes through the week.

I've managed to cut down in the last month. Now I smoke about 10 or so cigarettes in a night out and don't smoke through the week.

Gum/patches aren't really the answer for me. As my addiction is likely more psychologically and situationally based.

I don't see much reference to e-cigs in this thread. I have been using them successfully for over 125 days. They cause respiratory problems for me also, but much less so than real cigs. I am tapering the nicotine cartridges-started at 16 and am down to 8. Is anyone else using e-cigs?

^ That's because this is the "how to quit smoking" thread. E-cigs are what you use when you're continuing to smoke. :P

There are plenty of threads on e-cigs around HL--I'll leave it up to you to find them using the search button. :)

holy fucking shit batman, still smoke free! still can't fucking sleep though. when the fuck does this insomnia crap end???

I was supplementing with l-theanine when I quit. It promotes relaxation, and apparently normalizes levels of dopamine. It doesn't seem its ever been mentioned to be used for the purpose of quitting, but I've thought it might be beneficial in that pursuit, because of that.

YAY! On the still being smoke-free part, not on the insomnia part. The insomnia part blowwwwws, I feel ya. I couldn't sleep well for probably two or three weeks... :\

I've now managed 3 weeks without a cigarette.

The first 6 days were the hardest.

The cravings have diminished substantially. I haven't used any help, just willpower and the thought that time is my asset.

I see time as being like a wave in the ocean.... Relentless and constantly forward moving.

It's logical that one should ride this wave to his/her advantage.

^ Congrats on quitting! It's tough but it's totally worth it. :)

If you find yourself wanting one, go find something else to do. Easier said than done, but it sounds like you've got it down pat to be three weeks free. :D

I tried to quit several times...only smoked for 3 years now....tried several times cold turkey, started again, started using both dip and smoking, and then tried to quit smoking cause I had a nicotine replacement for smoking...mostly quit smoking...now trying to quit using dip...got patches...didn't give me nearly enough nicotine...so stopped those...now using only dip....its an on going battle

I'm a longtime chainsmoker, who on numerous occasions attempted to quit and for me is all about my will power, motivation, etc. Any physical wd's are virtually insignificant if I can get myself together and say stop, noticeable, unpleasent but nonetheless insignificant if I really want to quit. I think all this stuff (gums, pathes, whatnot) is bigpharm's gimmick - in the end it's all about what's going on in your brain. That's why I was able to quit easily many times (haha)

^ yeh ive come to the same conclusion, but not sure how it compares with heroin>subuxone though

I quit 3 days ago just watching a few youtube vids on the allen carr book and so far its been easy, although i wouldnt mind having a smoke, but i know it would set me back so i dont :D
