HOW TO QUIT SMOKING ~ Mega Thread

My trigger is waking up lol.

Ive started on Champix. No serious side effects as of yet. Am on my 6 th day. Taking x 2 0.5mg's daily, I am looking forward to going up to x2 1.0mg's a day as my body seems to have gotten used to this dosage and I am smoking/feeling normal i.e no desire to cut back/quit.

Have smoked for 18 years , up to 30+ a day. Trying to quit/ get healthy for my little girl.

Highly recommend "Easy Way To Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr. Was recommended to me by someone on here... Helped greatly.

The tapering method also helps--lowers ya down gradually.

i switched to nasal snuff in late september of last year. the switch was easy. now i was getting a dose of nicotine much greater than before- with smoking. this went on until april fools day, when i made the connection that i was having a mild allergic reaction to the tobacco.. or at least, once i stopped for over three hours, i noticed i didn't have the lump in the throat/sore throat feeling-as much, that i had had for years. it seems from what i have read/gathered, you can be "addicted" to an allergy, becoming fine for a short time after consuming whatever it is you're allergic to, and seeking that. this made quitting easy for me- identifying it as being an allergy.

you have to remember that you only smoke to relieve the withdrawal syptoms from nicotine. when you smoke a cigarette, the withdrawal syptoms are relieved and this creates the illusion that smoking relaxes you. the oppsite is infact true. you spend your whole time in a state of anxiety wishing you could smoke.

in short, you only smoke a cigarette to feel the same satisfaction that a non-smoker feels 24 hours a day.

id say give chantix a try. i started smoking when i was 12 now at 40. i used chantix havent had a smoke in just over a month. i have tried everthing gum. patches. the candys. regular gum. hypnosis. cold turkey. this worked great for me. just make sure you eat something just before you take the pill

yeah, this is a great book. there are clinics open everywhere around the world which follows this guys approach. also, there is a movie version of the book...

for my personal experience, i read the book and after finishing i stop smoking for about 3 months. but unfortunately, life had its consequences and i start again8)
planning to quit in about 2 weeks time, lets see how it goes!

I can't quit. I wake up and have tobacco cones just to stay asleep. I found heroin, done etc easier to quit. And have. Still dose on codeine every 2 weeks now, but thats not adiction. I know st.johns wart stops you from feeling the hit of cigs, and can help many a lot. But i just stopped taking the tabs and started smoking again. I might give it ago since the tax is making me want to rob a servo for smokes. Maybe yagoona :P Like a lady said when i complained about the price, maybe you should quit then. I was like, nah, i'll just resort to robbing old ladys to smoke. Why cant they just ban it? I wouldn't pay pot prices on tobacco. Point, St. Johns wart. Google it. Peace, and good luck to my fellow smokers.

What worked for me was nicorette gum and lorazepam, lorazepam is a great anti-convulsant and well If I had to quit cold turkey id atleast get some kind of gum but id prolly never make it

"Easy way" worked for me, it was as easy as they say, but the immune system gets a severe chock, so perhaps some who has been smoking heavily for many years, need a nicotine supplement. As everyone knows - I suppose - nicotine stimulates not only acetylcholinergic receptors, but releases dopamine and is actually improving the immune system.

I didn't need any as I am on Raw - nothing better exists for your immune system - but those on junk food, may need to think again. A nicotine patch for at least a year I'd say.

Pander and I made it our goal this year to quit smoking. So we're quitting. We've got gum, lozenges, and klonopin. And each other. I've got a good feeling about this :) We've both been smoking for 7 years :(

^ Good luck, Kenickie! You both can do it if you set your minds to it, as it really is "mind over matter"! Don't let any lack-of-cigarette bickering come between you two. ;) Keep us updated on how it goes. When's the quit date?

our shared birthday omnibus. (so april 4th.) :) we've been smoke free for exactly two mornings.
we have two days of concerts (twin shadow tonight, warpaint tomorrow) which will be an extra super challenge, but fuck, once you're past the third day (with any addictive substances!) it's all downhill from there. i'm actually really surprised, PB is a pack a day guy, and i'm a little less than half a pack a day girl, but neither of us have been like....CLIMBING ALL OVER OURSELVES FOR NICORETTE. i expected PB to need one all the time, and me every now and then. but it's maybe a two piece, three piece a day thing so far. I'm thrilled it's going so well. :D

Glad to hear it's going so well! That's awesome. :)

Just wait 'til how healthy you feel--It might not be for awhile, but it'll be worth it. Trust me: I used to bike 6-18 miles every day a couple years ago. Then started smoking (and doing drugs 8)). Tried biking six miles last year and it nearly killed me. I've been smoke-free for a little over a year now and did ten miles on my bike the other day (could've done more but I didn't take enough water).

i'm coming up on two years smoke free.

gotta say, quitting meth was easier.

but, quitting smoking was the single best thing i've ever done, ever.

i TRIED quitting about 1000 times unsuccessfully.

eventually, after coughing up blood, i just quit cold turkey.

the first three weeks were hell. not like opiate withdrawal hell, but pretty fucking close.

and yet, i wouldn't go back to smoking if you held a gun to my head.

i know this isn't the most accepted approach around here, but borrowing on the 12-step experience that got my clear of meth, i prayed A LOT, and it seemed to help.

onxe i refuaed to smoke anymore, it just became easier. within 5 days, i could hang out with smokers (not recommended, but to me i was already a non-smoker).

the first week was the worst: i was a total, irritable asshole. the second, slightly less than the same, the third less so. by the fourth week... complete freedome. omg it was wonderful

i could breathe without wheezin'. walk up stairs without getting winded. after 6 mos my car stopped smelling like an ashtray....

Today I was tested after my alcoholic anonymous meeting. I'm staring at my brothers menthol pack right now, and i'm sure he won't say shit if I sneak one outside. HAHA...

I'm 3 days into the battle and it's not easy. One thing is letting go of alcohol, but nicotine is a whole other beast in comparison to all the rest of the drugs. I even quit meth and coke before cigs. Man, it's not easy.
