What can one do to help with the opiate itch? Specifically, I have done hydrocodone and oxymorphone and the itching is very problematic. Any suggestions to stop it? Thank you.:)

Yeah antihistamines. Benadryl, Dramamine, Zyrtec, claritin, and Vicks NyQuil are all good options. If one of those doesn't work well try another, all of those contain a different antihistamine and i have heard people claim some work better for them than others. Personally Benadryl always worked well for me though i never tried any of the others since i didn't have a reason to. Potentiates the nod as well.

Promethazine, diphenhydramine, doxylamine succinate, any of the pheniramines. I have heard hydroxyzine is good but we don't have it here in Australia. They will potentiate the opioids too. :)

^^ It's probably not OTC there either so he hasn't heard of it. Though it's possible they don't have it prescribed either.

^ I have heard of it before, but never from an Australian. Though my memory may be off. ;)

Consulting my brand new copy of our new Scheduling document... hydroxyzine is Schedule IV, which is prescription only. I have not heard of it being rx'd though, I was thinking of bringing some back from Thailand with me for that reason but didn't get around to it.

learn to love the itch if the antihistamines don't pan out....
lol

Loving the tactile sensation is definitely an option. I would just try to refrain from scratching yourself repeatedly because this can irritate and damage the epidermis.

If you have a localized histamine reaction, or even a bug bite, which is inflamed and itchy, I would suggest rubbing a small amount of colloidal silver onto it.

I always loved the itch as part of the effects of the drug. I would wake from a nod just scratching my arms, my legs, my back, everywhere. Opiate itch feels a lot less tense and severe than regular itches.

Benadryl tends to make me itchy by itself, and it's an unpleasant feeling. I've used Calamine lotion for other itching before though, and apart from not liking lotion on my skin, it worked. You might try that.

Sometimes you just have to deal with a side effect you don't like when you do drugs. Itching is better than a crash, at least.

I remember not knowing about the itching and trying to sleep after blowing oxys. I would find a comfortable spot, then itch, then have to find another comfortable spot, then itch... and then I would try to ignore the itching, but that wouldn't work.

Then someone told me to use a hairbrush, one with the small plastic beads at the ends. I have been itching myself with a hairbrush ever since, and man does it feel good!

I love the itch sometimes, but other times it is way too intense and I can scratch my skin raw. :\

My DOC is codeine mainly, which can cause a massive histamine release especially at the doses I am using. If I don't use it for a while and then come back to it, the histamine release can be overpowering!

Being a chronic eczema sufferer, I can ignore opiate itches (even with LARGE doses of Codeine!). Antihistamines work well, but dose about 20 minutes before you take your opiate dose.

A friend of mine is always complaining about "The itch" I think she needs to take more showers.
When I offer her Benadryl she refuses. I take Benadryl and it takes away my itch. Some people
enjoy scratching themselves tho.

I find the itch from codeine to be very uncomfortable, especially on doses above 350mg. Although I love the itch on other opiates like hydromorphone or oxycodone. I also have found diphenhydramine to be quite useless at eliminating the itch with codeine

Same here i love the itch, when one gets too high on opies and the itch is uncontrollable that is kind of like a sick form of torture.... I've woken up red raw from scratching myself to peices while i nodded all night.. Extremely irritated skin the next morning no fun at all.

Try different antihistamines, but really you should just learn to enjoy the feeling.. Unless it's "ok this is really starting to piss me off" type of never ending itching that can happen..

I understand those who also love the itch. Being able to itch your itch brings so much relief. This isn't the greatest advice but I like to sit in the shower and itch away with soap and hot water. Great exfoliation.
