How the War on Drugs Gave Birth to a Permanent American Undercaste

Yes, the comparison you have presented IS completely irrelevant... for the simple fact that there were no automobiles during the era of slavery.

And I don't even think the actual numbers behind the stats were the actual point of the piece, which was that, semantics aside, the powers that be have managed to keep people of color from living as first class citizens. Slavery, three strikes, zero tolerance or Jim Crow laws... whatever you want to call it... the system is loaded against them.

I agree. Just like comparing the single parenting statistics among free people to those of people with no rights who were imprisoned together is meaningless. If anything her facts almost read like some insane KKK bid to get slavery reinstated in Alabama on a 2011 ballot initiative.

How fucked. You know what is interesting about history? Whites had the least right to be in this country in the first place. Whites murdered the natives and stole their land. Blacks were brought here by whites against their will and made into slaves, and they are often still treated like slaves in less obvious ways. What the fuck. I'm white by the way. United States of America, what a joke. No doubt I'm grateful to have been born here by the luck of the draw but damn, what a dark past this country was founded on.

7.3 million roughly incarcerated on parole or probation, compared to an estimated total population of 309,073,177. So about .023% of americans are incarcerated, on parole or probation. My question is what % are we going to have to reach before politicians realize that the number is having a severly detrimental affect on our country as a whole?

2.3%, not 0.023%.

1 out of 43 Americans is currently incarcerated, on parole or probation.

Anyone know what % of American citizens are convicted felons (not necessarily disenfranchised; I'm a felon but I can vote and even carry a gun in this state)?

phrozen, to be a drug dealer (one that survives long in the game without getting jacked, offed, or arrested, of course), you need to be very people smart. You've got to read and register and trust your sense of who's cool and who's shady, and not make many mistakes on this. This sounds to me exactly what it takes to make it in legal business: keen street smarts. You have to absolutely exude confidence at all times, and know exactly how to stay calm and talk fast when situations come up, or you get called on one of those sly things it just kind of takes to get ahead in business. Often even more importantly, you need to know when to not even open your mouth or show the slightest reaction, in both legal and illegal business.

In illegal business, you answer to, and pay your taxes to, crime bosses. In legal business, you pay your taxes to and answer to the government. The former will kill you if you don't cooperate with him. The latter will leave you alive, but try really hard to ruin your life, if you don't cooperate with it. Sounds like pretty much the same dynamic to me. Just different risk levels.

There'll always be hustlers of one kind or another, so long as there are plenty of
1) Illegal or quasi-legal things people are willing to pay for (there are others besides drugs)
2) Unemployed young people who are quick on their feet and very very socially smart.
And I don't see either going away, even if drugs get legalized.
while i agree, there is no way current dealers will compete with the vast resources of wealth currently monopolozing resources. enough money for total PR/media, variety (do you want powder THC with a small measuring device or a small brownie or a good old fashioned bud? how about heroin cheap enough again to just swallow orally for pain?)

the only way dealers could still deal is to buy from stores and sell at a premium which would be ridiculous unless they form their own delivery service collectives lol

illegalizing drugs will cut off a majority of illegal consumers (of any illegal product) from the black market because so many connections are made through the ubiquitous drugs. but of course there will always be something banned that some people want enough, so a small (but very insignificant if everything that should be legalized is legalized) would remain yeah

Green1, I had a good laugh at your post, but it doesn't really have any relevance in the discussion.

Did anyone read Freakonomics? There was a very stressful black crack seller who had a college education, and supposedly ran it like McDonalds. So education is the key. Blacks get ridiculed for doing good (acting white here in Chicago) and therefore its the stigma attached.

I get so tired of the "victim mentality". Race has nothing to with it. I'm a 1/2 japanese-american , 60 years ago our grandparents were stripped of most of their property(except 2 bags) and thrown in prison camps. When was the last time you saw an unemployed japanese guy walking around bitching about the system keeping him down? The problem lies with the non-black elements of america who still feel guilty about slavery so they accept or excuse behavior that wouldn't be tolerated otherwise.

I agree that war on drugs much like the war on terrorism is complete and total bullshit, but I don't think one race is being targeted. The same conditions described above happen all the time to other groups. Look at the label of "white trash" this group also has a high rate of incarceration and lots of media attention for backwoods methlabs but no one is suggesting it's because they're white. People with a sub-standard education, and uneducated parents are always going to have fewer opportunities in life, regardless of race.

MTUSAMSO, well I guess since your half japanese then you are perfectly epistemicly positioned to dismiss the effects of racism in our society... I have never heard someone say I'm not hiring him, I don't like japanese. As to the drug war, what do you attribute the disproportionate amount of blacks in jail for drug crimes, despite not making up a majority of users? I mean don't get me wrong, I think blacks are the only people that are going to be able to change the situation for black people. At the same time I would never pretend their problems are irrelevant or imagined.

MTUSAMSO

i partly agree. while you're right that many supporting the current drug war are not racist,

the drug war was *initially* *VERY* racist. the purpose of the drug war was control of immigrant populations and keeping gangs in business after prohibition

If it wasn't for the war on drugs, you wouldn't have the market to make money selling drugs. They aren't all to concerned with the products they are selling, and I don't even think they should be, but with that easy money comes risk. I hate the war on drugs, but you buy the ticket you take the ride. People aren't paying 60 dollar a gram because thats what it cost to make, they are paying you for the risk you are taking. Without that risk you would have walmart undercutting the shit out of you and selling it for what its worth. War on drugs ruins everyone's lives, just because people in Newark are stupid enough to sell drugs out in the open on every other corner doesn't mean blacks are affected any more or less, we just aren't that fucking blatant, and that fucking retarded. Its also easy for cops to profile people going into these areas and arrest people that are copping. The legal system is obviously racist, but only if you are poor, if you have money color doesn't matter.

very true. as much as phrozen is correct that there are many differences between a legitimate business and drug dealing, there's many different levels to which one can be involved. Sure, you can be like that kid selling cd's. trying to flip some quick product for a few extra bucks. Or, if you're really trying to make business out of it, some factors include supply and demand, competition, prices, customer service (when are you available? can you bring it or do they have to come get it?), quality, etc..

in my neck of the woods there are so few people of color that bigotry is not prevalent outside of the ignorant white tweekers that learned it in jail or prison .
these peckerwoods are the vast majority of the inmate population . it is just the opposite of the cities where i spent most of my adult life . there black and brown crackheads were majority .

both kinds of addicts have a propensity to do home invasions in hopes of a score to keep the misery of their addictions going . i have been in with the both kinds of criminals for dui raps .

yeah i wasnt really laughing.. it's serious

the relevance to it is, some black guys will be mad at the white man so he will take on the skinny white boy

there are a lot of stories out there, on prison rape sites, guys getting gang raped multiple times

imagine

worst thing you could do to someone

put him in a fucking box

how about putting him in a box, and having him raped, and play wife
total trauma, always fearing, no rest for your mind
as they laugh at your poor ass getting ripped open

it's a reality

that's why i'm bringing this up

in a way, i think i'm thinking that some guys will wake up and realize that it can happen to them and it's something we should unite agains't

I know it has definitively touched me

Well I forgot to note a copy and paste and my first real submission of about 500 words or more was lost. I will note the logging in and timing out of a member log in. Oh well. It was just a great piece of writing on an internet server. . .

I concur. Couldnt have said it better myself. I love everything this country stands for but the fat white aristocrats have everyone in they're pockets. I to am white btw. The power needs to return to the people, black, white, yellow and yellow as one. If everyone made a stand about things they were passionate about would we be in the mess we are in now? I have no idea but I am willing to bet not. Every stuctre in modern day america is founded on poor decisions. The million dollare question is are we too far gone to return from the brink of collapse?

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

I have noticed and thought about this subject for quite some time. Once you are a felon that label seems to drive people to commit more "criminal acts", there is no hope any other way for some it seems.
any criminal behavior is due to disorder in the mind, which everyone has. stress induces disorder. putting a person in isolation after bureacratic trials deciding his fate, giving him counseling maybe (said counselor would probably want him to truly admit he's a criminal) and the exercise yard you see in every movie........ is it any wonder we're turning criminals into more criminals?

we are privatizing the prison industry (read: less regulation, guards start getting yippity) and our prison is severely overpopulated (something like double in some prisons) that we're considering transferring prisoners to other countries (our prisoners would love that; america is not known for having the best prisons)

so the answer is not "there is no answer". the answer is we need to entirely re-think how we rehabilitate criminals

Overall... generally speaking, the war on drugs has hurt blacks more then whites... but come on... lets quit playing the race card. It's all relative. Whats hurtful to me is painless to another...

Drug use and a persons like or dislike of the effects... has nothing to do with race, gender, age, socioeconomic status, or any other variable.

Proportionately, there are more poor people in prision because they don't have money for defense. Wealthy blacks don't go to jail anymore often than wealthy whites.

This is an issue of economics, intelligence, work ethic, and looks, more than anything. Poor Black Americans [interested in financial success and willing to work] have the same opportunity to succeed as poor White Americans. Probably more. If they are smart, willing to work, and physically attractive... there are no limits.

Given the same IQ... a nice looking black man will get more of what he wants from this life in the US then an ugly white man.

How much longer do whites in the US have to cater to miniority demands for equality. Theres probably as much reverse discrimination going on these days as the traditional kind.

Barak Obama is a pathetic joke the dems served up with the backing of the Chicago political machine. George Soros..et al picked him because they felt he could be controlled more than the usual politician. Boy were they fooled. Like most others... he's let the Presidency go to his head.

Another thing... Does anyone really believe Barak Obama would have been elected president were he a white senator from Hawaii running against a young republican [not following 8 horrible yrs of george Bush]?? I don't think so. He's no better or worse than any other liberal democrat but his timing was perfect.

Tired, flawed argument.

How about the Meth epidemic that is affecting mostly poor white people?

And, if this country is so racist, how did a Black man become President instead of a far more experienced, White P.O.W. who sacrificed 5+ years of his life for his country?

And what about the Black on White crime rate as opposed to the White on Black crime rate?
That rate is consistent thru out the US and has been for years and is not a result of selective enforcement/prosecution either.

As someone stated above who is part-Japanese, their grandparents had their homes and businesses taken away and they were locked up, without a trial, without any rights, etc...yet you don't see Japanese people "in the system" because they didn't resort to crime upon being freed, despite the anti-Japanese sentiment that was prevalent at the time.

Instead, they worked hard to regain what they had lost and didn't complain about being "victims" despite being faced with racism and other obstacles.

"The (white) man is keeping me down" argument is a false, self-perpetuating one and the mentality of entitlement as well as the mentality of victimhood are both self-defeating.

I see people that come here from Asian countries such as Viet Nam, unable to speak English, yet they manage to become successful thru sacrifice and hard work.

The race card is played out.

The people who continue to play the race card only hurt themselves.
