How often do you catch yourself "bending the rules" at your workplace?

Yeah I bend 'em when safe/practical to do so. The funny thing about working for a contractor is they ,husband/wife ; directors of the contracting mob I work for , encourage it because really they couldnt give a fuck how we get the job done , they are just in it for the money.

One of the main things with rules is, to make sure that the reason behind it is made very clear and explained to those who are following it.

Given a rule that makes no sense, wastes time and has no logic behind it, it will be broken!

That said, in my current work place most of the rules are there for a good reason, hence I follow them.

Whenever possible. Sometimes I'm quite open and ruthless about bending the rules too, but that hasn't come back at me, yet.

Never-

violations will incur monetary penalty, subsequent offenses are subject to corporal punishment

I've learnt how to bend the rules at almost every job i've had..

I sit on the net & listen to music a fair bit at this job.. "Technically" we aren't allowed to do this but as far as i know most people still do. I sit at a computer all day so i think id go insane of boredom if i didn't.

I get more than my share of work done still, so they don't complain ;)

Im also meant to triple check for mistakes in my work but i never do. That'd take forever and a partner checks it after me anyway's so it's alll good.

I work as a service assistant at a supermarket. I ALWAYS have my ipod in my ears these days playing music so loud I cant hear anyone else around me.

Its actually quite funny, before I had my ipod customers would be cranky and just plain annoying when I told them we didnt have the stock they wanted, these days they actually apologise to me for interupting my music listening! lol!

I get away with it because I work shifts when there are no major bosses around and I always do my job properly so i guess they dont care

I think supermarkets find it so hard to get or keep staff they'll put up with a certain amount of shit though...but that's pretty cool, I don't work in a supermarket but similar industry and I couldn't get away with anything like it.

I caught some other people bending the rules at work (fudging stats to earn a better bonus). In the words of their supervisor, they are going to be 'performance managed.'

I wonder if that's like being boned.

Pretty much, except the implement of destruction is double ended

I have the great position of being "indispensable" at my workplace (I'm the only one who can use the computer system); and as such, I can twist, bend, break, or otherwise circumvent any rules that may be in place (within reason).

Such as. Today, my boss was on the phone to some lady in regards to a trainee we sacked. My boss said it was because she was giving away free drinks, not showing for shifts, not paying for food or drink she consumed, talking on the phone and not showing for TAFE.

All the while, whilst sitting next to her; I was organising something less then reputable on my mobile while eating a cheese and bacon roll from the kitchen and surfing the net. She didn't care though; cause work was also being done, and work that noone else can do is the best kind of work to be able to do.

I just have to remember not to teach anyone; or I might get made redundant....

Zephyr that sounds like a very interesting experiement...........are u in HR??

Personally I am supposed to check power is off using 3 different methods but generally only use 2 because it just takes to much time.

Nah, Im a Scientist. This is a lab I work in. Problem is, the lab assistants that work for my scientist crew are hired because they are reasonably uneducated, cheap and have no further career path- therefore are treated by my boss as "well, they are just assistants, you cant expect anything good from them" type people and all the fuck ups they make are kind of "accepted"

Unfortunately, this is peoples lives they are dealing with and most of my day is spent trying to work out what the fuck to do to fix it.

Meh, where is that bloody rant thread..:X

Depends what you mean by rules?

If you mean as in procedures, then no. There is only a set way I can do my work and set ways to record everything.

I work in Graphics Prepress so if I dont do things properly I cost the company a shitload of cash cos the dumbass printers downstairs don't check anything. Once it leaves my department, its on the presses.

And everything needs to be recorded or my company doesnt get paid. Maybe I'm a goody goody, but cutting corners just ends up coming back to bite you in the bum. Hard.

After leaving college, my first job in my field was testing something that all kinds of people, including children, consume...then, I operated by your rule. With not a whole lot in the way of support, mind you. But, how would I feel if some kid died because I didn't feel like doing my job?

Make no mistake, people...everyday, someone dies that way.

But, there's a tendency to promulgate arbitrary rules, as if that somehow made up for people lacking basic professionalism or integrity. I'll bend those type of rules all the time, if I know by experience that I'm on solid ground.

Fasteddie ~ forgive me please. That was sarcasm doubleplusbad ~ I do my job as & when I am required to. That apart I try to occupy my time by ****** ****** ** ***** ************* or something like that ;)
