I’m just wondering how much is too much. I took about 35mgs when I was hammered one time and I ended up going to the doctor the next day. He looked at me like he was shocked I was alive. He said I should have had a heart attack. I was just wondering if you know about how much it would take to have a heart attack?<3

heart attack? unlikely. more likely to pass out and stop breahting

unless you have a massive venzo tolerance then 35mg is wayyyy too much and I dont know about the heart attck thing prob more like you would have respritory depression and stop breathing

LD50 orally in mice 3178mg/kg

Yea Benzos are nearly impossible to O.D on unless combined with other substances.

Ativans are considered the weakest of benzos. For instance 35mg of xanax will affect you in a harder way than 35mg of ativan.

As others have said, "too much" of JUST a benzo (meaning like fatal OD) is very difficult to come by. Adding any other CNS depressants such as alcohol or opioids will make much smaller doses more dangerous but either way, 35mg (aka 70x the usual starting therapeutic dose) is far too much.

"Too much" is a subjective term - if you're only asking how much will kill a person, its hard to say. If you're asking how much it takes to completely knock someone out or cause a black out and profound disinhibition, then without a tolerance its somewhere around 15-20% of the dose you took (or about 5-7mg).

Many people have a natural tolerance and can handle this amount (especially with a weaker benzodiazepine such as lorazepam) and then others will be knocked out by 1-2mg.

I would say you're lucky, since you were hammered the dangers involved were huge (at least they would be for me). Reminds me of high school when I took 9 ativan, can only remember throwing up a black substance that day and obviously getting caught since the only movements I made were dropping my head every few seconds.

As Cane2theLeft stated is is not possible to determine what "too much" Ativan is. Based on many factors such as genetics/natural tolerance and developed tolerance, etc., how much one can handle varies from person to person. You also mentioned that you were drunk, although you didn't include how much you had to drink or how much alcohol you can handle.

And there is no need to worry I doubt you had a heart attack, but rather you misinterpreted what the doctor told you. Consuming too many CNS depressants will cause your breathing to slow and become shallow until your heart stops. So I think the doctor meant that you are lucky that you woke up after such a heavy consumption. Although Ativan is a weaker benzo, 35mg is a lot to consume if you do not have a tolerance. Especially when you were also drinking - and I assume you had quite a bit to drink as you said that you were "hammered."

Like others have said, benzos alone are very hard to overdose on (you'd pass out before you had the chance to take enough to kill you) but mixing them with alcohol or other CNS depressants is like playing with fire. A little bit of each goes a long way. You really are lucky that you were completely fine. Just be careful in the future and learn your tolerance before you use high doses like that. For harm reductions sake please do not mix drugs like that unless you know what you are doing. I am sure that you didn't have a heart attack or any damage or problems elsewhere (the doctor would have mentioned it obviously).

Seriously though, you are lucky because many horrible things can happen when you take so many depressants even if you don't overdose. You could choke on your vomit, if your breathing slows enough your organs could begin to fail from a lack of oxygen, among many other things.

I am an example. I overdosed on oxycontin about a year ago. I thought I knew what I was doing and that I was an experienced drug user, although I was somewhat new to opiates. I fell in love with them so quickly and began using very often right off the bat. One night I was doing oxycontin and coke. The coke made me so up that I kept snorting more oxycontin to get a good "balanced" speedball. Like an idiot I didn't pay attention to how much I was doing. I felt fine so eventually I put myself to bed. As the coke wore off I drifted more and more into sleep. My friend did not wake up and find me until 12 hours later. My liver, kidneys and pancreas had failed. I WAS DEAD, give it another 30 mins.

Well anyway, I'm a lucky son of a bitch because my organs returned to full functionality in a few weeks. However, because I was passed out lying motionless on my right shoulder/arm with no oxygen to it for so long, I had severe nerve compression damage. My entire right arm was initially completely paralyzed for a few days. Then I suddenly gained enough functionality to move it around a bit, although it was still mostly paralyzed in the sense that I couldn't move it - only certain parts were actually numb.

It has been an extremely slow and stressful process but it is healing which is just amazing. for months it stayed the same and wasn't healing. Now I can finally write and I can pick most things up, although the nerve running up the pinkie is still numb. and the pain is GOD AWFUL. Ironically now I'm prescribed opiates because I just can't take the pain.

SORRY this is so long, but I just wanted to make a point. Be careful taking large doses like that when you are drunk. Don't do a ridiculous thing and THEN get on bluelight and ask if it was okay, but rather ask here first to see if its a good idea or not. I'm just saying people think they are invincible and its not going to happen to them but shit really does happen. I put my fucking self to sleep and still overdosed. And now I have this pain ridden nerve damaged arm and I'm right handed. FML hah.

Your account of what happened to you was a very interesting read. It is amazing how the body can heal given enough time. Hope you have full function in your arm by now or at least the pain is more tolerable. Crazy how these drugs are given out as medicine but can kill or maim you. I worry about taking too much of anything since my constitution is such that takes an abnormally long time to clear these meds. I worry they will build up and suddenly put me out like they did you. The dosing for me is too much too soon as written on the prescription bottle. So I take less than prescribed and the docs get angry. Guess I have to have my organs shut down too, to make my point. Tired of lying about how much I'm taking just to keep the peace.

JudyL, have you tried medical cannabis? I have been able to replace heavy use of xanax and ativan by means of a heavy indica strain, however some sativa is helpful as it calms the mind where the stronger indica side won't. Once you find a strong strain that works, you are best to eat it as IME that brings out the sedative effects of the indica the most, you will also need to inhale some, you can use dried cannabis and/or cannabis concentrate products. If you are able to procure some potent bho concentrate (budder) of an indica strain, smoking that while trying to bring on the edible is best. goodluck

Hey etard,
my brother had a similar incident happen when he overdosed on heroin and passed out on a couch, laying on his arm for ~15hrs. His arm was completely paralyzed then slowly ( and VERY painfully) the sensation returned along with intense fibromyalgia and nerve pain. It eventually went away and the only permanent result has been a slight drop in his grasping efficacy and arm strength/control. Both you and him are lucky to be alive but I imagine that it was hellish to go thru.

@OP I agree with everyone else here. If you want to be brash, the amount of lorazepam that you did was "too much" for anyone to take in one sitting. Even half that is too much. But it always depends on many factors. Consider yourself lucky and don't be a dumbass like that again, even if you were "hamMard" as I like to call it.

You could probably have eaten 100mg and made it alive. I've eaten 600mg of temazepam and though I blacked out for two days, nothing embarrassing happened. I even went to work. Wasn't fired.

As long as you don't mix other CNS depressants benzos are VERY safe in terms of fatal overdose in large amounts - however, chances are you won't just sleep for 3 days - most people that take too much, too much, end up telling stories about waking up in jail having been beaten up by cops with 500 bucks less on their bank account and no recollection of what happened 4 days later. It's not going to kill you, but chances are it's not going to end well.

A therapeutic dose of lorazepam is 1-3mg.
