How much inhalant use does it take to cause brain or nerve damage?

Hi, my friend was wondering how exactly harmful inhalants are. He has frequently heard people say that inhalants are dangerous and harmful, but how much use does it take to cause brain damage? My friend wants to try every drug at least once unless it is very dangerous, but he most likely will never touch any inhalants any time in his life other than nitrous oxide. He will simply not risk permanent brain damage for a 2 minute high, but does wonder exactly how much damage one "huffing session" does to a person. Let me emphasize that my friend does NOT want to try inhalants, but is merely curious about their effects on the brain and body.

I'm pretty sure common inhalants such as butane may cause brain damage after one use. It depends on the user. I've heard of people dying after their first huffing session.

Yikes. My friend will never touch inhalants then. Thanks for the fast reply.

I should mention that I'm not including Nitrous Oxide in that post. It seems to be pretty harmful and the biggest harm is not breathing oxygen at the same time, passing out with a balloon in your mouth or getting a vitamin B12 deficiency.

I know nitrous oxide isn't all that harmful or dangerous as long as you make sure you have a friend with you so you don't pass out and suffocate. My friend has done nitrous a couple times and it is really amazing and feels like a very intense short acting dissociative. He is a sucker for NMDA antagonists, and thinks that dissociatives, even DXM, are underappreciated. But, I digress.

If you want to use inhalants you have basically two available options: nitrous or diethyl ether.

Don't use butane, gasoline or whatever. That's just toxic shit.

Amyl/Isobutyl nitrate is worth a try too. Its pretty safe and its sold in sex shops in little bottles. Its not as intense as other inhalants but it can have some interesting effects especially huffing it while on other drugs.

^yea I forgot about that one because I don't find it pleasurable at all. It feels like taking heart medication (nitroglycerin), heats you up and makes you feel generally uncomfortable in my oppinion.

Nitrous oxide has not been shown to cause brain damage provided you are still getting oxygen to your brain when you are doing so.
Making sure you take a breath with a balloon should do the trick, as well as not hyperventilating into the balloon to the point where you almost pass out

stay away from krylon/spray paints, gasoline, toluene, naptha type stuff. REAL, IMMEDIATE damage can be done by these types of chemicals. Inhalants can be extremely dangerous. Personally, i would stay away from inhalants. There are so much more effective, and safer ways to explore consciousness. Research any and every intoxicant BEFORE you do it. By the way, it's ok if it's really YOU doing the huffing. We talk real here. We dont SWIM.

When Using the Nitrous Oxide - do not huff straight from the dispenser as this can cause damage to the throat/lungs. Spray into a balloon and then inhale from that :).

There is no high to explore concerning inhalants outside of nitrous oxide. I've huffed damn near everything, it's all the same high but with different toxicities.

I suppose incase your friend does decide to go through with using hydrocarbon inhalants they should keep this in mind:

Don't ever breath straight from a pressurised can. Because the gas is so compressed, after spraying it the gas will spread out quickly and become extremely cold extremely fast. A lot of damage can be done from this, e.g. some form of frostbite in the back of your throat or in your lungs which in the worst case scenario may stop you breathing.

This can be avoided by spraying the gas into a balloon first and leaving it for a moment or two so it can get back to a safe temperature.

Diethyl Ether is still worth a try I'd say if you're interested in inhalants. I'd recommend having a sober person nearby though, as it can make you pretty damn stupid.

And don't smoke afterward. That's just disaster waiting to happen.

I've had plenty of ether. For me it's extremely similar to nitrous, but lasts longer probably due to obtainable quantities and makes the breath taste and feel like aircraft paint remover.

From Erowid: Our understanding of the literature is that there is no such thing as safe use of volatile solvents, aerosols and other street inhalants : their psychoactive effects are inseparable from nerve and organ damage.

That is the high of inhalants. It's what happens when you deprive your brain of oxygen.
