a friend of mine recently committed suicide taking 70-80 sleeping pills (either zolpidem or zopiclone) but from what i've read its extremely hard to OD on these, does anyone know if it is actually possible or were the other factors involved possibly? cheers

also this is completely genuine i have no intention of taking loads of sleeping pills to kill myself i just really would like to know what happened to her.

Damn, sorry to hear about your friend :(

I think the Z-drugs are only slightly more toxic than benzos, which are generally quite safe, but 70-80 pills sounds really quite an excessive amount and probably more than enough to kill someone; assuming zopiclone which are standard 7.5mg pills, thats 600mg total. If mixed with something like alcohol, it can also dramatically increase its overdose risk through respiratory depression, or other complications such as aspiration of vomit while unconscious.
