How long will a mycelium cake continue to produce?

I just coldshocked my first batch of jars last night and am wondering how long a cake will keep growing caps.. My instructions makes no mention of it, it just says when to pick, but nothing about whether or not they're still good after that.

I've gotten a good 3-4 flushes out of one cake before. I think it was fruiting for a good couple of weeks if not longer. But keep in mind that you'll be getting diminished returns on each flush.

For me it always depended on the cake, and the growing conditions. I had some cakes last forever, but as others said each flush is going to be smaller.

Keep dunking it and letting it produce until it stops producing or until the cake becomes infected with bacteria.

I found that my dunked cakes eventually gave way to infection of some kind towards the end of their lifetimes and then I just chunked them.

Eat them if there's no mold or anything when you're done, you can probably get a good trip out of it. I remember reading somewhere (Shroomery?) that you can eat the mycelium if its an edible material (rice) and it will have psilocin/psilocybin in it.

When I was in college we had a bunch of cakes that never fruited. This was of course long before the days of the internet, but we'd also read somewhere that the mycelium contained small amounts of psilocybin.

So after we gave up on the batch of jars we decided to go for it. Slathered broken up cakes with ketchup and ate shitloads. OMFG it was nasty.

It was good for a mild stomach ache and a laugh the next day. Never repeated the "experience".

I as well have tried to get high from an aborted (posibly contaminated) pf-tek style mycelium cake. It didn't work for me either, it was years ago, but what I did (again, long time ago) was, crumble the mycelium into a mixing bowl, added a few cups of orange juice, mixed and let sit an hour or two,\. Then I strained off all the clumps and consumed the liquid. It was awful. Acheived nothing but an upset stomache.

I'd be carefull consuming things like vermiculite or partially bio-degraded rice flour. Also why did the mycelium cake abhort? Does it smell funny? I wouldn't eat some random fungus or bacteria that grows on the leftover macaroni salad in my refridgerator, If the cake is contaminated then there is something growing in there that is not what you had hoped for!

Eating mycelium cakes probably isn't a smart way to get high. And I don't know if anyone could tell you if its safe or not (we'll never know exactly what stalled the mycelium growth)

Edit: I dunno where I got the idea to soak in OJ, strain and consume. I probably read it off the net but psilocybin/psilocin is definetly water soluble (shroom tea anyone?). The stuff in the OJ may not have hurt,, but water would have been a safer (worse tasting) bet.

edit 2: apparently I got that idea from the shoomery! as Ason posted a link to the shroomery explaining exactly what I did. Makes sence this all happened in 1999 and back then the shroomery was just as useful/informative as today

They were straight rice cakes inoculated from mycelium agar tubes. And not contaminated - you could tell the ones that were contaminated. They grew the mycelium fine but sometimes they just did not fruit. Don't know why. We did not know that much about what we were doing - sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. All we had was one of the the maybe two books that was available at the time, I'm sure people do much better nowadays, there is a lot more information available.

And no I would never suggest anyone do this. When you are 18 you think you are gonna live forever.

So after you harvest your first growth you do the dunking process again?

i think my maximum was somewhere at 6 flushes out of a normal 220ml cake... i think i might have goten 1 more but it wasnt worth the wait (7 days to maybe get 1 or 2 mushies).

like someone above me said, until it runs out of nutes and water....

It really depends on the moisture availability and size of the substrate in proportion to the surface area. Around 3 flushes with the last one being not that great sounds about average but 0-1 is possible and 5+ may also happen in certain cases IIRC. No idea about the max anyone has ever done.

After the second flush I don't think it's a good idea anymore to coldshock or dunk, although a dunk in a bleach solution can be OK. You need the right bleach concentration though, too much and you hurt the mycelium, too little and you start risking contaminations from exposure. Without bleach is definitely possible but I would really protect your mycelium and use sterilized water and stuff.
