How long should a film be?

Perhaps.

It is entirely possible for a film to have a complicated plot, not be wrapped up prematurely, not be sloppy and be a good film.

but it takes longer to resolve such plots sufficiently. thats the whole point.

I disagree.

The Usual Suspects has, many would agree, a complex plot: 1 hour 46 minutes
Memento has, many would agree, a complex plot: 1 hour 53 minutes

Would you argue that the complex plot of The Usual Suspects was not resolved sufficiently?

A film with a complex plot need not necessarily be over long. While I agree there are films with complex plots which are long, the two are not directly proportional.

I think xena nailed it. How long should a piece of string be?

usual suspects is not a complex plot. its a crime story. law and order does them regularly in under an hour.

Memento had only one character. Hence, it didnt need to be that long.

and im not going to argue about relative plot complexity either. i said # of characters, which implies a complex plot. more characters means more stories and details to tie together or resolve, which necessitates more time.

Well then, I guess pennywise and I wil have to agree to disagree.

One last time, I think rules like l=c*x, where l=length, c characters and x is some arbitrary number, just impose a contrived limit on a filmmaker.

OK, perhaps you think (either truly or for the sake of this discussion) that The Usual Suspects had a simple plot? It had 7 central characters - according to your formula, it should have been much longer.

no, it had two central characters: kaiser soze and dean keaton. The rest were supporting characters to a plot built on the interaction between these two characters.

Like I say, I'll agree to disagree.

I'm interested to hear other opinions on whether length is directly proportional to number of characters. What do you think?
