How long have you been using the internet and why did you first use it?

Gunna show my age here but started on the net at Uni in 91. FTping JPG's and telneting to MUDS.
I got a 1200baud modem in 92 on my 386 and discovered BBS's but only used them to chat to people. Got a 2400 and then a 9600, thats when I discovered pirate bullentin boards and hacking.
Was Muding at Uni during the day and DLing games at night. Discovered that it was pretty easy to hack Yoyo accounts at Monash and then I didnt have to go to Uni anymore to MUD. I could stay at home.
And mean while I was 18/19 and going out to wonderful places like Sante Fe, the Tunnel, Warehouse, Saratoga and the Boardwalk. No wonder I was failing uni.........
Wazza You remember a Pirate Board called "The Haven" run by a guy called "Cougar"?

Bars.

Access to the net first in 95...
My lecturer told my class that the only way he could be contacted outside hours was by email... so he gave us an assignment to write him an email (worth 5 percent! - the easy monash uni day... i miss em). He told us that we could become addicted to this and spend the next 5 years pissing it away chatting on the net!

i guess about late 95ish? used to go into Deakin Uni where mum worked and just surf the net. wasted lots of hours
smile.gif

got internet at home about 97. in my time i've wasted lots of nights on IRC, ICQ, MSN and lately, bluelight
smile.gif

oh yeah, and jenna jameson
wink.gif

never really got into the MUD or BBS things. Dabbled, but never found them that exciting. DOOM deathmatch in the labs at school was exciting

Got first real computer (as in ibm...away from mac) in 95 and connected to the net then aswell. I was 14 , shit hang on no, i was like 13. i lie. i connected to net at about 14 and was an avid chat user from 96 till today.
I have a LOVE/HATE relationship with my computer and internet. Its been both good and bad for me.

damn these geeks i just cannot compete. well elver you really are more geeky than i. sigh.
i accomplished my internet connection only in 1991 (means I was 9)... running off one of the first 286's of its time was a neat little comm's program called telemate where by i'd dialup to local BBS's and use nasty old versions of SunOS with gopher and lynx to look at what was then, not much
smile.gif

Between the kernel crashes and the recompiles the BBS's inet was pretty stable.
Sometime in the near future I would go on to run a 2 node BBS on ezy-com and start using the magical TCP/IP protocal. Didn't really get into MUDs much, cept for this neat little game on gods knows what BBS software called Virtual Sysop
smile.gif
Then there was Usurper, Lords of the Dragon, Bre and god knows what else.
If there is an idling record on IRC i reckon I have it
wink.gif
Since 1992 Ive been idle on efnet... (only recently moved cuz of damn packet kiddies heheheh) and still idle gracefully amongst the likes of ozorg (cough) and other such nasty new networks that have sprouted due to the fall in connectable networks to efnet. I dont think ive said more than two words ever... but everyone knows me.. strange
smile.gif
Oh well... back to idling.. my computer just woudlnt be the same if i wasnt connect to some sorta IRC network

Oh my. Such memories.
I think I first jumped on the net about 10 years ago. 2400 baud modem - it was actually Telecom branded, as in what Telstra used to be. BBS's - then 'chat' style BBS's (Talk Channel etc), APARNA, MUD's (oh my god A +* Revenant *+ flies in from the east),
yadda yadda

I’ve been using computers for aaaaages, since about 92-93 I think, I’m not really sure when I started using the net I'd say somewhere around 4-5 years ago give or take. I LOVE the net and don't think I could live without it anymore (well I could, but it would be quite inconvenient), I have soooo many friends on it and half of them are the people I see often i.e. school friends, or the bluelighters that come to meet ups etc etc. It's just so much easier than phoning everyone and finding out what's going on as I’m sure you all know.

ok, I hate to say this. But I sat down and used my first computer in the 70's.. eck
1979 or something from memory.. Apple's.. Also programmed that hot BASIC on them to make my own games too.. I guess that was a sign I was destined to use these new fangled whatchamacallits as my income.. But thats always easy to change.. Anyone want me to be their personal masseur for $130K+/yr?

could someone explain the concept behind "MUD"....I dont really get it.
um...hopped on a computer when I was 3, but internet i was a late starter. '94 me thinks.....

wow this is a killer thread!
So what was the net like before corporate America really took over? I cant imagine the net without advertisements!!
Share with us the tales of the ol' skool!!!

You can kick the monkey all you want...but what do you do when he wakes up?

MUD = Multi-User Dungeon
Its basically a big role-playing game, you know, fight monsters, build up your stats, go on quests... That kinda thing, all text based...

hehehehe - first time i used the net was in '95 - my friend had got it and started to skip school and stopped going out with us after school so she could use it.
Not understanding the addiction she had to it - went over one weekend and she introduced me to Mikesweb Chat and Rocketmail well needless to say i became an internet hoe for a bit.
eventually got it at home in '96 - for "study" purposes and yeah - thats the story
