How long does METHADONE block?

So the half-life is supposedly 24 to 48 hours at the most. But how long does methadone act as an opiate blocker? A friend of mine took 20mg of methadone for the first time on Wednesday night, around 7pm. On Friday, around 2pm he took (what is for him) a substantial shot of heroin but did not feel the effects...it was a "limbo of misery," as he described it. How long till this shit clears out?

Methadone isn't a opiate blocker, you're thinking of naltrexone. Naltrexone is an opiate antagonist, blocks opiates from working. Methadone can get you high by itself, in combination with other opiates it intensifies the effects.

Do a search!!

Methadone can block the effects of other opiates, not by antagonization, but by flooding the opiate receptors, being a relatively potent mu-agonist with a very long half-life. This so called "blocking effect" occurs only when the dose is over 80mg or so. There is not a specific blocking mechinism in methadone, it just raises your tolerance to the point that you can no longer get high, unless you do very unconventional things to get high (like me shooting simultanously 2 100ug/hr fentanyl patches, 200,300 or evem 400mg of IV oxycodone, IV 20-30mg of dilaudid, or inject a complete gram of pretty good tar heroin). I am at 180mg, so the "blocking effect" is really profound. So when i want to get high, its a very expensive and time consuming procedure, which is why i dont do it that often. It is sort of like if you are shooting 3-4 bags of heroin at once, 3 times a day: you simply wont feel a few vicoden, or an oc20. Its more tolerance than anything.

But in your case 20mg will not "block" anything. You dont need to wait anytime to take additional opiates.

If u dont have a tolerance to opiates 20ml could kill u,
and 20ml is enough to block some of the diamorphine high,if u have a low tolerance.
This sounds alot more like the gear u had being really shit!! its probably nothing to do with taking methadone.Although in the USA i know u do get LAAM which is a lot longer lasting than methadone maybe this is what he took?

diamorphione has the ability to get farther into the brain then methadone. perhaps intensity isn't as high as, but w/diamorphine, more parts of the brain should be "activated"

Heroin effects more opiate receptors than methadone, which isnt necessarily a good thing. Both are mainly mu-agonist, but methadone just effect the mu- receptor, whereas diamorphine effects the sigma, kappa and delta receptors, which can have undesirable effects. It definately does not make a drug superior because of the number of receptors it effects (in fact just the opposite), but for other reasons, heroin is a more euphoric drug, mainly because of its short half-life and nice strong rush. Methadone creeps on slowly, all of sudden it hits you pretty hard at its peak, then plateau's there for 3-4 hours, and slowly creeps back down.

Still, more than anything, heroin focuses most of its attention on the mu- receptor, which is what makes it so enjoyable.

Methadone has relatively low side-effects, there isnt much itching/histamine reactions, and it lacks many of the other side effects normal opiates have, because it only effects one receptor, mu-1/ mu-2, which are associated with euphoria and analgesia. Methadone blocks at 50 mgs and up, I'm up to 60 and I notice a big difference in the amount of heroin I need to get high, and I only get high for like 10 minutes.

Some people say methadone starts its "blocking" at 50, 60, 80mg depending on the individual. Personally after 80 is when trouble start, and got much worse when i started getting near 200.

the clinic i was on said 50mgs, but everyones metabolism is different. their were people saying they were sick by the next morning. im not sure if i believe it. they just wanted to get high i think.

when i was on 50mgs or above, i couldnt feel 160mgs of oxycontin iv'ed at once. my uncle use to shoot 5-6 80mg oxycontins to feel it. he was on about 150mgs though. he still didnt even really get high he said.

^^^Yea i definately know what its like to shoot 6+ oc80's simultaneously, and my 180mg/day of methadone i take make it feel like virtually nothing. All i get is a short taste, no nod or anything.......

i'm on the clinic and at 60mgs and I am blocked from getting high. I know i could get high if i took enough but why bother when your on methadone? You spend more money and have a double habit which is really bad. Plus, you should take advantage of methadone to try to get clean. I still use every now and then and all it does is remind myself that Its stupid to use on methadone. But many people get on this clinic just to avoid getting sick and that was my intention at first until i realized that the clinic could be my ticket away from opiates. ( I know, who would want to get away?)

^^^Exact same reason why i got on methadone. How i got up to 180mg, i dont know, i just kept on saying, "i need more!".

^its easy to get up to that amount, just like any other opiate - time and availibility are the factors. I started on 15mg. Once i got hold of 50mg amps + private script then it just rocketed. Now i try my hardest to steer clear of it. The only way you can get down is by gradual reduction - took me a year to reduce.

As to the metabolism of methadone - i used to have to dose twice a day, compared with most ppl's once a day. I am told i am a fast metaboliser of opiates. Having said that, now that i no longer have a 'done habit, i can take a 50mg amp and i'll feel it for 2 days.

This is my first post after about a year of lurking around BL.
I am currently on 115mg of methadone daily (oral dose), It has really helped me out after being a smack addict off and on for about 6 years.
I have been clean of heroin for 2 months now, and rarely think about it.
When I first started at the clinic the dose was 40mg which would not hold
me for more than 6-8 hours, so I would also have to shoot a 20 bag in the afternoon and before bed. Last time I used I was on 60mg of done daily and would feel nothing after shooting a whole quarter of good tar,
no rush, but would feel a slight high for about 1-2 hours. So in my opinion it is a waste of time and money to use smack while you are on methadone.
I would rather spend the money on a sack of chronic. Just my 2 cents.

I generally do about 60-70 mgs. of methadone (oral liquid) and sometimes rail a little oxy along with it, not much, 10-30 mgs, but I definately feel the oxy. Keeps the opiate high going strong for awhile before it levels off and then drops. But I've known others who did equal amounts of methadone and couldn't feel shit from oxy or H, so it has to be an individual metabolism issue.
