i did 3 yrs of grad school in epidemiology, and i wouldn't worry about it in your situation. you aren't going to handle the skunks, right? the only way to get rabies outside of a bite if from having bat urine fall in your eye. btw, i love skunks - do not be mean to my peeps.

If you think you're at risk, get vaccinated. It's simple.

You have to be bitten hard enough to draw blood by an animal who is infected with rabies.

I wouldn't worry about it.

I had the rabies vaccine and it fucked me up. I don't recommend it unless you plan on working in an animal shelter or becoming a foreign aid worker who walks in poor neighborhoods infested with rabid dogs. Seriously. The chances of getting rabies in the developed world are next to nil.

AND... if somehow you did get bit, you'd just go to the hospital and get the vaccine series to prevent you from developing the symptoms... because we have actual medical facilities for that here.

He would also have to get the rabies immune globulin, which costs a small fortune.
