How Does Suboxone Work?

I have read all bout how to take the medication but what I am wondering is how to get it prescribed to you. Do I need to go to a Suboxone doc? Is it normally very expensive? Do they just write you a script you take to a pharmacy and get filled or do you take it in the doctors office?

another question would be since i started taking oxycodone to help with undiagnosed pain, and depression will suboxone help with this? antidepressants dont work, and tramadol the only opiate i have gotten prescribed does nothing.

i thought when i started on the oxy it would be a good idea as it always lifted my mood but i can now see why they dont prescribe this stuff for depression! maybe a longer acting opiate like oc but percs just leave me with too many ups and downs in my day to help with depression. i seem to live my life in two hour "high' increments at a time. i now take on average 60 mg a day sometimes 90mg. if i were to get the opiates prescibed to me now like i always wanted i would never get anything close to this amount.

also does suboxone give you any kind of a buzz?

Congrats on making the choice to go to suboxone!

Check out the Suboxone Mega-Thread Version 8 (Versions 1-7 are in the archive) for a lot of great info and stories about BL's suboxone usage.

As far as getting a doctor you need to find one that does suboxone prescriptions. To do so, go to Subxone.com (Find me a doctor). You can do a search in a radius of your area and it will pull up every doctor that can Rx suboxone. Prices vary greatly, so I would suggest calling everyone on the list (In my area prices range from 100-500$ visit. After you find one, just make an appointment and go from there, how they opperate will vary as well. My first visit was to talk about suboxone and finding a good dose. He wrote me a week's script and told me to find a dose that works. I then came back a week later and he wrote me a script for the dose I felt I was comfortable at. I now only see him once a month. My visits last no more then 15minutes, he asks how things are going and writes me a script, and that is it. I don't get drug tested but some people reported they do. Without insurance one pill costs around 8$, but that one pill lasts me one week.

People find they do get a "buzz" ( I do) from suboxone but it is not your typical opiate buzz, and at low doses it is much more predominant then higher ones. You will also find that suboxone doctors Rx you much more then needed, many of us use less then 4mg for maintenance. I am prescribed 8mg 2x daily (60 pills a month), but I use around 1mg a day. My months script (which I share with my fiance) lasts us 3 months or so. It's phenomenal. I also snort my suboxone. I get much better results that way and use much less then if I took them sublibgually as prescribed. Also, shooting them is an option as well, but only if you shoot your DOC to begin with. More about snorting/shooting in the suboxone mega-thread.

But please check out the link above, the knowledge in those threads is great. And if you have any other questions feel free to PM me!

1: go to suboxone.com and enter your zip code in the top right corner of the page. this will provide you with a list of the doctors who work with and prescribe it to patients. call around to get program details as well as prices. it will vary from doctor to doctor on how they utilize it. some will have you take it in office, some will give you a prescription right there (some for a few days, some for a week, some for a month+), etc.

2: suboxone can help for both pain and depression. it's effectiveness for your pain will depend on what kind of pain you are in. there have been studies on suboxone's effectiveness for clinical depression, however these studies are fairly recent and are not really conclusive. i do not believe suboxone is currently prescribed for depression at this time.

3: oxycodone is the opiate in percocet, and it is short acting. taking regular oxycodone rather than percocet will provide you the same duration of pain relief or a high with the same "ups & downs" you describe. it's all the same except percocet also has apap in it.

4: suboxone is capable of producing a buzz//high, however this is usually only for opiate naive individuals, the first few times it's used, OR at very low doses (desirable results in this aspect are often obtained after an individual has tapered down pretty low).

are you currently experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you stop using percocet? if not, then i don't feel that it is necessary for you to get on a suboxone program. if you are actually looking for pain relief and not just a steady supply of drugs to get high on, then i suggest going to a doctor and getting clinically diagnosed for you issues. i would also do the same for your depression (for which you would probably be scripted an SSRI). if you are indeed just seeking drugs for recreational use, i suggest getting help for the compulsive behavior to do so (which may include a suboxone program) before you end up too deep in addiction. it seems that you are heading down a pretty dark path and it would be best to quit while ahead.

just my thoughts and good luck to you.

i called around today and found a suboxone doc near where i live. he charges 140.00 for the first visit. on the phone he seemed like he would be more likely to prescribe subutex 30 days worth to me because of the price difference. I could not afford the suboxone after calling local pharmacies. but the subutex seemed to be a little more affordable, even though every pharmacy i called said they would have to order the subutex.

also i am just sick and tired of being sick and tired. i am not looking for another drug to abuse. my addiction now i cant afford and it is not as fun as it used to be. i only see it getting worse.

i do not want to get high off the subutex i just want to feel normal. i never intend to get high off my oxy. it just seems to be the only thing i can take that makes me feel normal. i have tried all kinds of ssri's and none work. i feel worse when on them. the physical pain i can handle, its the anhedonia that comes with my depression that i cannot.

a couple of questions.

what is the subutex equivalence of 30mg oxycodone? or does it not work like that? if not what is the dose i would likely be on for a 60-90mg a day habit? from what i have read 2mg is plenty enough.

also i am prescribed klonopin by another doc. should i mention this? i have never abused the klonopin, and dont even really like them but i do not want my other doc to know about my oxy abuse. is it safe to take it with my subutex?

also how long for most people does it take for withdrawls to start after taking there last dose of opiates? in my case percocets. most days i take my last 30mg of oxy at around 6pm and then take my next dose at 9am the next morning. i feel like complete crap in the morning, i have bad intestinal pains, my nose is runny, and my eyes are watering like crazy. i have never let myself get beyond this point. no matter what i have always come up with money thus far to keep my addiction going. are full withdrawls a few hours away?

on another note it is crazy the amount of money i spend on my drugs! i spend atleast three times more than i make somehow! i hope when i get off the opiates i can keep up my new money making ways. i feel very stupid to think of all the things i could of done with my cash other than buy drugs.

i knew i had hit a new low when i sold my prized srv fender strat last week to buy more oxy. when i was a teenager it took me all summer to save the money for that guitar and it only took me three days to take the percs i bought with the guitar money.
