How DOES Ohio State treat out of staters?

I know the school is like 90% people from Ohio...but is it one of those schools where out of state students aren't one of the crowd and they stick out? Cause the more I look at OSU the more I want to go there. But there is the problem of not being from Ohio. Is it that big of a deal, or no?

I go to ohio state and to be honest, I don't really think it matters. I know tons of people from out of state and out of the country too. I don't think you should let that discourage you. It's pretty hard to stick out in a crowd a large as OSU's students. I see a lot of diversity there.

Cool. Cause Every time I look at OSU's website I'm like "Man...I want to go there." Either there or OU...but OSU is huge and has the reputation of the huge ass parties.

lol! If that's your reasoning for going there, then more power to ya ;) as long as you support OSU and HATE MICHIGAN (and i hope you're not from there) then you should be fine. there's a fuckton of school spirit there. there are a LOT of foreign students, etc, there.

you still need to keep in mind the pros and cons of attending a large school like that though.

I know I don't want to go to a small school, all the schools I'm looking at are 10000+ students. I want a school where I can get lost, where I have an almost surefire chance of finding friends, where there's almost guaranteed to be someone there just like me. It's a good school from everything I hear academics wise, and good academics+good parties=great school.

And no, I'm from NJ, so no micigan fan here. I'm perfectly set for the whole school spirit thing as I'm the only one in my group of friends with any school spirit.

^i attend a school with 20k plus, but ohio state has like 50k don't they? it's HUGE. there are problems with class size etc. hard to get in, ya know? you'll see if you go there. i had some friends who had problems getting into classes.

good luck!

i go to a state school and people from out of state blend in the same as anyone else, unless they have a strong accent or are non american. And even in that case, theyre usually a bit more popular at social gatherings of sorts because theyre different, and offer some culture less boring than what we all grew up with. id say 92% of my school is from PA, the rest either out of state or international.

oh and our undergrad program is about 10k students, and grad program about 5k students.

oh and like RC said, PSU (penn state uni) is the same, like 50k+ students and rediculous class sizes, etc. mine is much smaller, i think its the perfect size.

well i just thought of something - people are NUTS about sports here (thank god I dont like sports and remain neutral!!!). If you say a damned word about any out of state football team when people are real drunk, you run a high risk of getting the shit nocked out of you. In fact, ive seen more fights break out over Philadelphia vs Pittsburgh than anything. Philly fans are just damned crazy bout their team.

Ppl will walk down the street just screaming "PHILLY FOR LIFE!!!" and if someone yells, "FUCK PHILLY! GO STEELERS!!!" its like an initiation of an 8 vs 8 man brawl.

Ohio and Pennsylvania seem to be very similiar in a lot of regards, so I imagine things are of that nature there too.

Philly teams suck, I just have to say that. I'm from the other side of the Delaware, and I'm anti Philly...I got spit at at a Phillies game cause I was rooting for the Mets.

first and foremost, I find it hilarious that Philly fans have enough merit to even approach us Steelers fans ;) however, I suppose I can understand because Cleveland Browns fans are just as bad, actually scratch that, most definetely even worse!

I live on Ohio State's campus but I go to Columbus State. I definetely feel you on wanting to go to a bigger school. the first college I attended was a smaller private university in Columbus, and I hated the small-school feel.

I am 100% confident in saying you should have no problem acquiesing to OSU's student life. just remember that OSU and Columbus in general is a very spirited bunch when it comes to pride and sports :) college football season is like a damn religion out here! even if you hate sports, you won't even be alienated then - the school and the city of Columbus is VERY diverse. there are people of all walks of life here, and that's why I admire OSU and Columbus as much as I do. however, it will surely help out in the social/friends sense if you like sports and football.

OSU has been increasingly hard to get into every passing year. it was so difficult that I didn't even bother to apply a couple years back when I was into the college search. there is just so much extra bullshit that no other colleges really need... the mandatory essay was the worst because of its length and general banality of the questions.

that being said, I really think you should go to OSU. you seem to be in favor of everything that it is. it is so easy to make new friends at this school, no matter what you like or how you are. since you are a Bluelighter you probably like to party - and the party scene is great. and I don't know what it is about Ohio, but the girls in college are beautiful and easy to approach.

if you do happen to attend OSU you should send me a PM and I'd be more than happy to show a fellow Bluelighter the ropes of the city :)

:) I think I might fit in cause when it comes to football...I like the steelers most of all...(Not a big NFL fan though.)

But yeah...everything I hear about OSU just puts me closer and closer to going "This IS where I'm going" not "well, I'll think about it and apply" but "If I get accepted I'm going" And all these posts definitly just added to that. It's stretching the budget a little to go, but it definitly sounds worth it. And I meet the application requirements pretty well (My GPA is slightly low, but I've got solid test scores to compensate) and I can handle student loans.

dude i dont like any PA team, im from DC lol. Just saying how rednecky people are about sports here.

but yah overall college kids across the country in general dont seem to care about creed or color, so long as you are down to party.

OSU parties suck compared to OU parties. all the ones at OSU are throw by frat people and have huge keg lines.

(this is animal_cookie BTW)

I have a friend who went to OSU, coming from Michigan. He loved it and got along just fine.

It's cool that there are other people from ohio state on here. You can also contact me if you come into town. I'd be interested in meeting a fellow bluelighter. P.S. Fear the Nut! "we are the buckeyes, we are killer nuts" haha

OU kicks ass...I used to party up there all the time...good people, good drugs...cool town (I love Athens)...occasionally a decent rave on the outskirts of town...amazing camp-grounds with miles of hiking trails (Zaleski State park is where I camped at)...Good school too from what I'm told by friends but I've never attended.

St. Patricks Day, the whole town of Athens is just one giant party...all night long...instead of bar-hopping you can go house-hopping...Great times. Some of the best fun I've had in my life (and some of my greatest moments of insanity) have taken place at OU campus and the surrounding town of Athens. I recommend OU.

^ if you thought OU St. Patty's Day was something special, you should really go to Athens during Halloween. that's one helluva party.

but this thread is about OSU. OU is a decent place, but it is far too much of a little rural town for my liking. if you like the small "mom and pop" feel, then I'd definetely go there. but if you want to be in a big city known for its diversity (in people, culture, etc) then go to OSU.

Right you are my friend. ;)

I agree with you on the "mom and pop" aspect of Athens as well. There is a reason the parties are outrageous there - there isn't much else to do.

I have to agree that Columbus/OSU are the way to go if you have a choice and don't want that small town feel. Columbus has so much to offer outside of college - that's why I'm here. ;) (I'm not attending OSU though ... I'm an artsy-fartsy CCAD dork)

Columbus (and Ohio State) definitely has something for everyone. it's huge, vibrant, and diverse. Good academics, good reputation, good area, good parties. I'm from Columbus with 3 generations of Buckeye alumni, and the only reason i didn't go was because so many of my HS classmates were going, and it was so close to home. Being from out of state is absolutely not a problem, there's a niche for everyone at that school.
