How does everyone have like 6,000 friends on Facebook?

I have about 200 friends on facebook and even that is a little much for me. Most of my real friends either dont have facebook, or check it once a month. FOr me its just a way of keeping up with family and friends that I care about, but never see. Most of my activity on facebook is posting pictures so that people who are interested in knowing what im up to have a visual to attach to me, I really dont get the point of random status updates. I dont give a fuck what you ate for breakfast, or if you have a headache, or if someone cut you off on your way to work this morning. Real life> Facebook. People that measure personal worth through Facebook are fucking pathetic.
 
I had about 180 friends at one point but realised it was ridiculous having some guy I went to kindergarten with know that I was having a beer with Ben. Plus I hated the fact that there was a high percentage of Facebook Stalkers in my list that never participate in conversation but you know are trawling through your photos and making an opinion about you. So I deleted about a hundred "friends" and now sit at around 80 or so. Every now and then I do a quick check to make sure there is no dead wood.

From what I can tell about the people that have hundreds of friends, they are usually the people that don't have many REAL friends offline. They are the type of people that meet you out on the town one time and immediately add you on their iPhone. You can't say no because they do it right in front of you, however you will probably never speak to them again as they try to BFF you immediately and you can smell a social reject from a mile away. They also unlock their Facebook page and people who are paid to get lots of friends so they can market to them, befriend them. Either way is a great way to get your identity stolen....

I'd like to get down to around 50, however it's harder than you would think! Only be Facebook friends with actual friends!
 
I only have 400 something people on facebook.... Due to the fact I moved from CT to PA. So added new and old people but a lot of people I hated added me. I don't know why I hit confirm. In the end I still hate facebook, its only good to see what people are up to and laugh at their lives.

^this is why you dont need a facebook, no offense. i just think facebook causes a fuck ton of judgemental human beings based on pictures and status updates and stupid pointless shit.

Yeah but its mainly just laughing at the people I hated or disliked in high school.... But facebook is good for hitting up friends who are too retarded to get a cellphone lol or finding out about house parties/raves. People sending you invites and shit.

One time I made a facebook it was called "blank troll" swap blank out for my school name. I added everyone and trolled.... Said shit to people and they got butt hurt. A guy threatened to kill me so I was like damn this shit is crazy....then I deactivated the account but everyone at school was talking about it for the whole week. Lol nobody guessed it was me.... Funny shit.

check out the theory on dunbar's number. they might have a lot of "friends" on facebook, but they definitely don't have that many social relations. 132 is a good number. dunbar would have been proud that his predictions were correct :D
 
The number of facebook friends is inversely proportional to the number of true, count-on-me-for-anything friends. Someone with many facebook friends is skilled at time-wasting, but ultimately very lonely.
 
I don't have that many FB friends, less than most of my friends, but these are the "types" of FB friends I have
- family (although I only add selected family members)
- high school friends (HS was 3.5 yrs ago for me, I probably got FB about 5 years ago?)
- university friends (was in uni for one year)
- college friends (was in college for two years)
- work friends (select coworkers from previous jobs)
- family friends (I am friends with some of my sister's friends, and then just people from my hometown)
- clubbing/partying friends (people who I've partied with throughout the years)

I go through my friends list every couple of months because I don't like having too many people on my friends list.

I don't think I've seen anyone with over 1,000 friends. The average seems to be 200-300 friends I'd say.

Lol! I noticed one of my friends had 1,000 facebook friends! So he invited me and my boyfriend to his bday party. So it was him, his girlfriend, me, and my boyfriend ... but that's all! I thought that, since he had 1,000 facebook friends, he would have more people come to his party but nope. And my boyfriend and I were just "kinda friends" with him at the time, we just liked the club that they were going to LOL and they are fun. But it was kinda weird :p

Em... no. You are generalizing. For some people, Facebook is a tool for facilitating some agenda. For example, some people are event promoters. Others are required (or highly encouraged) by their workplace to befriend their workers and maybe to promote their workplace. That last one sounds disturbing, but I swear, I've heard it happen here and there.

And yet others are just very social people who always have a lot of friends or move around a lot and Facebook just ends up being this great, convenient way to reconnect with them. Why must Facebook be viewed so differently than a forum, for example? The only difference is that you're much more likely to know the people than on forums.
 
these people with like 6000 friends are either pornstars, actors, musicians, or simply social butterflies.

I myself have like 670 facebook friends, a quarter (maybe a lil more) are people I'm actually close friends with, the rest are acquaintances, musicians I like and follow touring dates of, or people I've met on the internet and havven't met yet.

I mostly just use facebook for networking, and chatting to people miles away for free, keeping up rapport so I can visit them up the country or in foreign lands.

Some of those "not-particularly social" dudes you're chatting about just add loadsa people on facebook to make themselves feel popular by looking at their friends count, from my experience.

It sounds like you're taking things way too seriously - maybe your 132 facebook friends are simply all people you see a lot, do you add people you don't know much often??

Lighten up - it's fucking FACEBOOK - it's far from reality.
 
We can all agree Facebook is shit, I use it maybe once a week and thats to laugh at all the stupid shit people say. And I still manage to have 1300+ friends even though I haven't sent a friend request in about a year. What can I say? People keep adding me, and I feel bad if I say no.
