I need as much information on this as possible. My friend has been snorting
Crystal meth every 2 days for 3 weeks. She discovered that she was having
Vaginal bleeding and is very concerned about the depo shot she is on

Please and thank you

Well, birth control and Meth and i'm assuming especially in combination will drop vitamin B levels and iron levels ( as well as many other vitamin and mineral levels) down to a dangerously low level. Does she have any other symptoms like depression, paranoid behavior or spots developing anywhere? If so she's probably way low on vitamin B3 (niacin) but this is something that you should definitely see a doctor about. I would suggest she stops using meth, obviously. She if very concerned about the birth control but not the meth..?

Vaginal bleeding? I am assuming you mean like menstrual blood and not like a cut in the vagina, just to be clear?

Bleeding from the uterus is a completely normal and very common side effect of Depo-Provera, especially in the first few months that one begins to use Depo Provera. In fact, it's the most common reason women stop using Depo-Provera during the first year of use, due to irregular bleeding (spotting) and/or prolonged bleeding. It's especially common during the first 3 months after getting your first Depo-Provera shot. Heavy abnormal uterine bleeding can occur or disruptions in the menstrual cycle can last long after an injection. After getting several shots, many women find that their periods decrease or even go away completely though.

I had menstrual-like bleeding constantly for over 3 months once when I was on Depo-Provera, and I wasn't using meth or anything similar.

She should definitely stop using the meth though and go to a doctor if the bleeding lasts for a long time or is extremely heavy.

I am not aware of any interaction between methamphetamine and Depo-Provera. Inducers of the liver enzyme CYP3A4 may decrease the blood levels and therefore the effectiveness of medroxyprogesterone acetate, the drug that is in Depo-Provera, because it is primarily metabolized by that enzyme. MDMA can inhibit this enzyme, but as far as I know, methamphetamine does not. Many other drugs do though.

But as crashing said, using meth plus the fact that she is bleeding can lower vitamin and mineral levels. When I had constant bleeding after getting the Depo shot the doctor said there was nothing they could do except maybe try giving me some birth control pills to take on top of the Depo-Provera, since the Depo shot is not reversible, it's in your system for months. But maybe other doctors might have some better ideas.

Your friend should take some vitamins and minerals, starting with an iron supplement and a B-Complex.

ETA: I would also take a supplement of calcium, magnesium and Vit D3, because the Depo shot causes bone loss.

She has been on the depo for 3 years. The bleeding didn't linger nor was it heavy. It was
Just that one time and it hasn't happened since. And she stopped using since it happened.
Do you think her depo will take effect when meth leaves her system? could the depo be destroyed?

She should be fine and the Depo should still work. Spotting is pretty normal even after using Depo Provera for a long time and as I said I could find no evidence that meth makes Depo ineffective. I can do more research and ask a doctor if you'd like.

Well she has stopped use and I know she is being careful now.
If it isn't any trouble for you, i'd like any and every piece of info
On this if you can find any. Its a very hard topic to research, that's
For sure. Haha. Being informed on this would be great so I can pass this
On. Please and thank you.

I wrote you a whole long reply and then accidentally deleted it instead of posting 8(

Basically all the medical literature or medical professionals I checked said there were no known interactions between Depo Provera and methamphetamine (or any other amphetamine), and it is not known to make the Depo shot ineffective. People on methamphetamine and other amphetamines are prescribed Depo Provera by doctors. But meth (and MDMA and some other stimulants) are known to cause spotting or early periods. This can happen to anyone, whether they are on Depo Provera or any other form or birth control or not. There is not much data on why this happens but it might have something to do with meth's effects on the cardiovascular system, stress on the body, and/or vitamin depletion. It's possible that it could be more likely to happen for someone who uses meth while on Depo Provera, as Depo Provera is well-known to cause abnormal bleeding itself and makes the blood vessels in the uterus more fragile. Bleeding is not a sign of the Depo shot not working and the person should still be protected from pregnancy.

Of course, if someone is going to use meth it's a good idea to try to limit use, limit the stress on the body and take vitamin/mineral supplements. It is also a very good idea as I said before for anyone on the Depo shot to take calcium, magnesium and vitamin D3 because the Depo shot is known to cause bone loss.
