How does alcohol's neurotoxicity compare to other drugs?

I don't know how neurotixicity is quantified and I'm assuming that alcohol would be toxic to GABA-ergic receptors (NMDA?) while something like MDMA can be toxic to serotonin receptors. Can you say which is "worse"?

Are we talking mol of compound vs mol of compound, or with average, or extended use?

Too many variables, but alcohol has ruined MANY more lives than pretty much any other drug (Opium in China several hundred years ago rings a bell for a contender, but that's really it..).
