I live in Australia, and I get government handouts to look for work. I get $440 a fortnight. I'm not going to convert that cost as everything costs different amounts in Australia to America, even when converted.
150/fn for rent(sharing a house with 5 people :D)
~60/fn for phone and internet
~80/fn for food
~20/fn for public transport.
150/fn for bills and then fun.
The biggest cost saver was sharing with so many people (is fun as you always have people to talk to) and cooking in bulk. I would cook 8 portions of pasta in one go, and then freeze them all. Would cost less than $20. Frozen veggies are great, and eggs are good too. It is possible to save money on this, but you can't own a car or go out too often. Also, Australia so it is free to go to the doctors :D
