Stimulants How do you deal with teeth grinding?

Hi guys,

I've recently been taking relatively small doses of methamphetamine (and smaller amounts of some other stims) and I've noticed that even when I've only take 20-30mg+ the grinding is almost unbearable, even when I take 30mg in 10mg doses over a few hours, I've tried chewing gum but I tend to be physically incapable of chewing (I can normally open my mouth if I think about talking, but if I try and open it just for the sake of opening then it just clamps back shut), I tried a pacifier but my molars were still grinding down just as hard as before and I almost snipped the pacifier with my front teeth, I tried cutting the front bit off a mouth guard (the type you use for playing rugby) and putting the two back pieces under my molars so that they wouldn't grind as much but this wasn't hugely helpful as the grinding made the mouth guard move around quite a lot and each mouth guard only lasted about an hour before it was just teeth on teeth again with the mouth guard pieces all but ground away and at $15 a mouth guard that is an annoying expense for me to incur!

Is there something I'm missing? some way to either stop the grinding or make it less rough on the teeth and jaw (oh my god! the pain in my jaw the day after!!)? or am I just going to have to learn to deal with this and perhaps put in a bulk order for mouth guards and see if I can get them cheaper?

Cheers,
nardal

i read that people use 1mg of magnesium with MDMA to avoid pressing jaw, maybe you should read a little about That

Interesting, magnesium was recommended in another, somewhat related, thread. I'll have to look into it because this is becoming something of an ordeal and I don't want to end up with dentures when I'm 25!

Hi Again, Nardal! Ha! I must be stalking you.

Yeah i just wanted to say magnesium is the traditional treatment for teeth grinding on stimulants. I've never seen that backed up by any convincing science but it seems to be a wide spread opinion including by people who know their shit.

A word of warning though - 'Meth Mouth' is all too real!! I never believed it in my raving glory days, and thought it was just propaganda. But My best mate only has 4 real teeth left and he is 35. It destroys your teeth - how or why is unknown, but it really does fuck your teeth. takes a few years but it REALLY does happen. Another reason why meth is not a good study drug.

Cheers

WC

^how or why is NOT unknown, meth mouth is caused by lack of dental hygiene, exacerbated by the horrible diets most methamphetamine abusers consume, also, the methamphetamine itself causes dry mouth, which contributes even more to tooth decay.

300mg Chelated Magnesium, proper hydration and nutrition.

Well WarChild, I though that perhaps I'm just asking questions that fit your area of expertise? Although I am aware of meth mouth, dry mouth weakens teeth, grinding physically damages teeth, the whole not eating/drinking properly for most addicts is obviously a big factor although considering my dosages I don't think that I'm likely to be experiencing anything this bad any time soon, although based on what my friends have told me they don't get bruxism nearly as bad as I do, although strangely I've never really had it this bad with MDMA (wether pills or pure molly) and I thought it was far more prevalent with MDMA than it was with meth.... I guess I'll just need to focus on keeping up my dental hygiene and I'll have to find some magnesium to take.

Thanks so much for your help guys, honestly I've had an account for less than a day and I'm already learning more about harm reduction than I ever could just lurking (ie what I've been doing for the past 4 years....)

i never grind my teeth no matter what ive had. i will sometimes have chewing gum, but it doesnt really make any difference. i think you just need to learn to control things

Just be VERY conscious about it, if I catch myself grinding my teeth I'll just make a conscious effort to stop and that works for me. Self control.

How are you doing your crystal? Most people who I know who experience the most teeth problems are the smokers.

I'm just taking it orally in tiny caps, which is why I'm a little concerned about the excessive teeth grinding, when I've done things like MDMA and everyone else is having issues with grinding I always assumed they just needed to stop being shit at life and just stop grinding, the problem is that I've found that as soon as I take a few caps my teeth just start grinding even if I'm consciously trying to stop them they are always moving a little bit, I was a bit scared that I managed to grind my way through a few mouth guards so I think I'm going to have to try this whole magnesium thing...

Also, I'm not sure if it makes a difference or not but normally by the time I'm taking a few caps to stay up (I only take meth to stay awake) I normally haven’t slept for 2 or 3 days so perhaps it's just tiredness making me lose control....

That's odd, I don't get any bruxism when I take my methamphetamine orally, it's got the least side effects of all the ROA's from my experience.

Absolutely invest in Chelated Magnesium, never EVER tweak without it! I sure as hell wouldn't. However, I agree that most of your problems are stemming from the sleep deprivation. Why do you stay up for 2-3 days at a time?

Hmm, this magnesium thing is going to be a job for this weekend I think.... The main reason I take it orally is because it seems to be the safest way (fewest things can go wrong, fewest side effects etc) hence my concern....

I end up staying up for days at a time because I've tried to cram to many things into my life, work, uni, a few other miscellaneous activities means that there just aren't enough hours in the day to sleep... luckily I have a holiday coming up in a little while so I can try and detox a bit and reduce the amount of harmful shit I'm doing to myself :D

300-600mg chelated Magnesium, 400-600mg Potassium, and a good meal with 30-40g protein do the muscles good.

Also, I check if my teeth/jaw hurt once in a while which lets my know if I've been clenching my jaw without knowing it. If I realize I have been, I'll keep my jaw open just a bit, try to relax to quell DA/NE anxiety to reduce extra clenching, put my tongue between my teeth slightly to see if I'm still clenching, and if I still am, fuck it, I have an LSD trip to enjoy, worrying about the clenching while tripping is only going to make you clench more often and harder.

On a side note, do you know anyone who enjoys the jaw clench? My brother's friend refuses to take Mg before events since he thinks the clenching is part of the roll (E, not MDMA). My brother also said he enjoyed the clench on a tweaky roll, he said it made him feel animalistic and primal, and it just felt right.

I'm really bad @ this 2, always grinding.. I have a mouth piece I use.. Ill also use a needle or pen cap just to keep my jaw propped open.

I recently started with high doses of good quality crystal and never notice any grinding or clenching which i always thought was odd, but I am very health conscious (ironic right?) and have taken vitamins with mag in them since forever so this may be the reason? MDMA though, no stopping that tooth chipping insanity.

Mouth guard or Magnesium for sure. I never take MDMA if I haven't already consumed 500mg of magnesium (I take it anyways as it relaxes your muscles)

When I was in my early teens using MDMA I used to grind so bad it was out of control. I still have some small scars on the inside of my mouth from just chewing the insides of my cheeks to shreds. I remember one night one of my best friends looking at me and flipping (I believe she was tripping) because there was literally blood dripping down my lips onto my chin.

When I switched to methamphetamine I learned that you just need to exert your will power and just tell yourself I will not grind. Higher quality meth and smoking vs. snorting made a noticeable difference for me as well. I haven't been into uppers in years, but I did smoke once over the summer and combined it with a low dose of morphine (30mg IR) and I fell asleep after 8 hrs on meth and there was no teeth grinding. But keep in mind a normal dose of morphine for me to feel high would be 400mg so you need to be really careful. So if you're opiate naive it might not even be worth it.

Another thumbs up for magnesium! You can buy it at most health stores/ supermarkets. Its cheap and does make the grinding much less intense.

I wish I had known this last year.. heavy MDMA and pill usage has lead to 3 of my front teeth having chips in them.. I keep having fillings put in but they fall out every few months. I can't afford to get my front one fixed till next payday and feel/ look like a pikey. Too embarrassed to smile or open my mouth now, it sucks.

Be careful to not drink or eat too acidic food/ beverages, the enamel will just weaken overtime and can lead to teeth decay and loss.
