My quote was a bit harsh I did not mean to ruffle any feathers.
I think that is the perception people a lot of people abroad have about rehab and 12 step in America.
And I think their is some research showing having spirituality in your recovery process leads to better outcomes. But there are also plenty of stories where some rehab programs seem more concerned with religious teaching then treating addiction.
I think that is what @schizopath was thinking of when I replied.
I do think that it is a valid criticism that one of the steps in these programs normally involves explicitly admitting that individuals are powerless. Like has been said in this thread, rehabs only work when the individual is ready to make them work - in that way I don't think calling people powerless over their own recovery is accurate.
