Hey guys, I'd like some input.

I'm 6'1'' and a pretty steady 167lbs, and I have never really been able to gain weight.

And I think the problem is how much I eat. I see the recommendations you guys post- stuff like 8eggs and 1 cup of oatmeal for breakfast. 2 chicken breasts and some rice for lunch. And I just can't eat that much- or should I say, I can and do, but after 8 eggs I can eat a snack at night and go to bed happy. Or I'll cook up some risotto and eat it with a whole chicken breast, and I'll be set till the next day.

I'm 24 now, and there was one time I gained a lot of muscle- when I was sent to a millitary boarding school when I was a highschool freshman. With unlimited access to pre cooked food and at least 100 pushups along with an hour PT sesh's worth of punishment every day I hit 180lbs. But that all disappeared two months into summer vacation.

I don't have a problem working out, I have the discipline for that, but even working out every other day and throwing cardio in between doesn't seem to stimulate my appetite. I'm somewhat toned and defined from years of effort, but I have never been able to eat like I would need to in order to gain that weight.

Did you all start off being able to eat so much? Did you invent some sort of system to make it easier? And how do spend the time to cook that much food?

Thanks for readin, hope you have some info. At this point, I don't feel like I NEED to get bigger, I'm fine with staying trim, so don't feel like you gotta solve my 'problem'... Im interested in how you manage as much as in your advice to me about my own situation. Also, weed doesn't stimulate my appetite.

hi,
if you aren't that hungry, why don't you use protein and weight gain shakes? there are shake you have to drink before or after the training. and shakes you can drink between your normal food.

It takes a while to get up to eating that much but not as long as you might think. After eating lots of meals your metabolism will speed up so you get hungry quicker. I find that if I have a large breakfast i'm hungry again a couple of hours later but if I have to skip breakfast (running late for work or whatever) then I usually don't feel hungry till lunch.

Start off with 4 eggs for breakfast then add the cup of oatmeal after a week. Then increase it by one egg a week. So after 5 weeks you should be easily eating the 8 eggs and oatmeal. I have to say thats a little more than I would eat- I'm usually around 6 eggs and oatmeal. Or a weightgain shake and oatmeal. If you start skipping meals your metabolism will start to slow down and you'll find it hard to return to eating big without ramping up. As an ectomorph making sure you eat enough is easily the hardest part of training. I like adding Udos oil (do a quick google search) and having a desertspoon full with every meal (bar my PWO shake). That adds a good gew calories. And having nuts around as a snack encourages me to snack between meals (they're just so moreish!).

As for finding time to cook- its pretty hard. You can make up big batches of chicken (or chilli or pasta or whatever) and eat them throught the week. Or use more convenient food such as shakes, bars, tins of tuna, nuts, etc.

Its worth noting that eating this much costs A LOT. Im constantly amazed at how much I spend on food on a weekly basis. If budget is a problem then using things like soy beans, quinoa, lots of eggs(if you can find a place to buy in bulk), frozen meat, tins, etc can save you a few bucks.

I just make a point of taking what a normal person would and doubling it. If i go out to eat I get two meals. 2 subway footlongs with everything is no problem. 2 super burritos with extra meat is no problem. I've even had 3 before but that was pretty rough haha.

The more you eat the faster you'll push your metabolism to go if you are training hard. I also try to get about 40-50% of my daily cals in immediately after working out. My metabolism is out of control. I emit heat all day long. My gf complains because I'm so warm all the time - even sitting next to me she'll feel the heat pouring off me (if its cold she doesn't complain haha).

The goal for me is to just make sure I never crave food. If I'm feeling like eating I've already gotten hungry which means I've already slowed my metabolism down. I don't get regular hunger pain in my stomach very often (I never have, I don't know why) so I have to be aware of when the last time I ate was and keep powering food down. Otherwise I could be content not eatting a full day and that would be a huge setback.

also, you can eat really cheaply even putting down 6,000+ cals per day. I shop at CostCo for anything like meat, eggs, canned goods, or other bulk items. Certain vegetables you can get there but I don't trust certain things they have like any roots (potatoes or whatever) because I've gotten several bad bunches from them. For a lot of other things, especially fruit and dairy, I go to Safeway. Oatmeal you can buy at WinCo for like 13 bucks for a 25 lb bag.

the hardest part for me is making sure I get an adequate amount of fiber and water. Usually if you eat like this you'll have no problem shitting regularly especially with a lot of cardio and weights to get your blood pumping. If you don't drink enough water or eat enough fiber (and I've found oatmeal fiber doesn't seem to do jack shit for me down there), then you'll get some major gas really fast. I'm struggling this week because I've been power eating and skimped big time on fiber and let myself get somewhat dehydrated. Needless to say I haven't had a decent shit in awhile and it sucks.

Hey amigo, the sick sad truth is that's just the way things are.

The beginning of a "bulk" can be quite painful. It's not uncommon to spend a decent amount of time puking your guts out till you get used to the added caloric load.

But, believe it or not, you'll be even MORE stressed out when you go on your "cut"...Trust me on this, you'll definitely look forward to your next bulk ;)

just start stuffing yourself. Keep eating after you're full. Eg If a bowl of oatmeal fills you up in the morning, eat a bowl of oatmeal an egg or two and some fruit and maybe a slice of toast w/ peanut butter, do this every day and before you know it you wont feel like you're overeating you'll just spend more time enjoying food!

So true. That feeling where your staring at a spoon determined to eat it but having absolutly no desire to- I know it too well. Well suck it up and stuff it in your mouth- bodybuilding (just like life) was never meant to be easy!

Its in your head. If you eat 8 eggs in the morning and nothing else all day until a snack at night, you should not be going to bed happy, you should be upset ; ). If you've forgotten to eat for more than 2 hours it should really mess with your head. Its a state of mind that allows you to eat as much as you need. Its a determination. A metaphorical hunger that overrides anything physical.

My point is if getting bigger is something you want, then you should want to eat a whole bunch of food. The end of your post explains quite a bit. You don't feel the need to be bigger, and you're fine with being trim. There's nothing wrong with that. If one day you decide you'd like to get bigger though, make that choice and get your mind behind it.

On a side note, you can tailor your diet as needed. I don't eat as much as a lot of the guys on here. I'm shorter and I just don't need it. Start out eating more than you would normally, then 2 or 3 hours later eat again...2 or 3 hours later eat again..etc I'm just now learning how to do this bulking thing and I've been trying for 3 months. I'm on the toilet a lot more now finally, and this is a sign to me that my body has adapted to the new intake.

once u start eating like a pig, the hunger pains become unbearable

then eating big just gets easier n easier

You seem to be trained to be comfortable in catabolisis, Eat less but more often, stretch those eggs out all day. Look into catabolic and anabolic states and you'll see why you aren't gaining. Provided your likely a hardgainer but it's about keeping the metabolism active rather than trying to just feed it for the day and forgetting about it.

hate to sound like a broken record as ive said this time and time again but...

...DBOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
*talk about a bottomless gut*

20mg's and you'll be in starvation mode the entire day.
puts weed to shame.

I must have some lower quality gear then, cause I'm not feeling that with my dbol.

I have started smoking a bunch of weed at night and eating as much food as possible.

To the op's original question, I know eating more can be difficult at first but once you start doing it more your body will eventually start to want the extra calories naturally. Adding milk to every meal is a good tool.

"Stop eating like a pussy and start eating like a faggot..THat means you should be shoving meat down your throat all day!!""

GHRP-6, gherlin hormones will help in your quest for consumption. You are going to have to make changes to your melanocortin system. Some solid advice within this thread, many ways to go about acclimating yourself to eat. Focus on eating like your are 200lbs...you will get there op

DBOL? Peptides?? That is going way to overboard.

While it doesn't seem like I have as much of an issue as you, I know where you are coming from. Like doesntmatter said, you have to tailor your diet. You do not need to eat as much as someone who is 200 pounds. I'd imagine you are quite skinny at your height and weight.

As many suggested do it slowly. Stay consistent. Try to eat at least 4 or 5 times a day. This doesn't mean full meals all the time.

Protein shakes help me alot, either after I have finished eating or inbetween. Also, sometimes you just gotta shove the food down. Those last couple spoonfulls of cold oatmeal are nasty, but life could be worse.

Weed never really helped my appetited. It did help with sleep but then it stopped. I've cut out all drugs except suboxone for the time being, and its really helping.

What is your training like? Every other day might be a bit much, are you doing compound lifts?

Also, if you smoke cigarettes either quit, cut back or switch to snus (lower nicotine). I gained quite a bit after I stopped smoking, I use snus a few times a day and am looking to quit that too.

The mind frame is important too, think about eating for health/mass. Not just taste. I just microwaved two quick scrambled eggs for a snack. Not the most tasty thing, but its still good. I still eat pretty good meals, I tried Blue Marlin for the first time last night. It was really good.

Suboxone is helping you with eating? How does it affect your lifting and energy level?
