We're pipes and bongs the thing? I seen em advertised a lot on old high times but usually only seen in movies that they smoked joints, also were smoke stones used often? I have a few niki glass stones if anyone has ever heard of them and I think their from the 70s but I'm not all that sure. Yeah anyway what were your preferred methods in those days?

Joints, wood pipes, metal pipes made from pipe fittings lol

By the 80s glass pipes were starting to be a thing. I think they appeared in the 70s. Bob Snodgrass started fuming the 80s.

Here in Eastern Can in the eighties WEED was a fuckin rarity... only hash was readily available... but sometimes it truly was THE - literally - stinkin shit... cashmere or whatever they called it lol. We smoked the hash/resin/gum(when Jamaica was the origin) in joints, cool little sneaky pipes, and often (in my case at least) by the white hot - butter - ''knives'' technique, inhaling the hash fumes with a funnel. Fun times, when the shit was, indeed, the shit - it sure wasn't always, I had a few tokes of shoe polish alright. That's how it was for serious tokers in the 80s that are now in their 50s... I smoked a huge fuckin lot of shit and I smoked even more when GOOD weed became, gradually, more and more available. And.. I don't smoke no more now LOL! Don't even miss it - and the fuckin black throat oysters I was garnishing my sink with each morning. I prefer exercise, wine with the lady and a hit of dope/meth/whatever's insanely strong that I scored with mates once in a while. Take care guys.

First off, the pot was trash back then and I'm damn jealous! We'd use to smoke 6 -7 bowls of some mexican before we'd even catch a buzz. Every now and then some Cali shit would make it's way back east and blow us away but it was very rare. But yes, it was small bowls, bongs and sometimes joints. That was about it. I used to prefer the bong route because very little got wasted.

Apparently people used water pipes to smoke cannabis going back to the 40s... just couldn't have been too common I'd say, most pot just wasn't good enough to merit smoking that little. I've been re-reading On the Road and came across this passage. Page 204 in my edition.

"When he came home at night he took off all his clothes and put on a hip-length Chinese silk jacket and sat in his easy chair to smoke a water pipe loaded with tea."
-Kerouac speaking about Neal Cassady living in NYC, mid-1949

Bongs and joints in Australia. Outdoor grown pot through autumn and winter then every summer massive amounts if Thai Stick and later compressed Thai and Tonnes of Afghani hash were imported. The crews that did these imports are no longer operating but it was always the same every year...buddha sticks and hash in summer, local outdoor once the season finished. Pretty much always mixed with tobacco.

I've read that two-paper joints were very common, two rolling papers side by side to make an extra long joint. The reason these were liked more than regular sized joints had to be due to the average potency of bud at the time.
