how could DMT kill someone?

The DMT "rush" can cause a spike in blood pressure and anxiety as it can be a quite INTENSE. Unless they have a pre-exisiting condition a healthy person would survive the ordeal.

Well the MAOI may fuck something up if they are on any other meds/drugs at the time.

I'm surprised not many people have asked about ROA. For all we know, she was a huge psychonaut at a "party" (which many of us have, 5-10 people eating psyches) who was administered way too high of a dose of pharmahuasca or ayahuasca. The DMT could have played a very real part in the death if this were the case. I keep reading she "took" the drug, or her boyfriend "gave her some", which doesn't seem like smoking.
If it was smoked I don't think it has anything to do with the drug, unless she ran to the pool somehow, then couldn't get out (doesn't seem normal...). The effects would floor you and you couldn't get there, or you would be fine by the time you got there...In this case it was probably an accident, or something else.
Either way, I'm sorry to hear about your friend's death
. DMT should not be blamed for the death in my opinion, and it is going to get bad publicity for this I'm sure. Education on all drugs, including psychedelics, would help to prevent future situations like this.
If it was smoked I don't think it has anything to do with the drug, unless she ran to the pool somehow, then couldn't get out (doesn't seem normal...). The ROA makes all the difference - I could (just about) see someone not realising how far off into that DMT place they had gone that they forgot to come back if it crept up on you. Have only smoked it before and you're not going anywhere with that fleshy thing dragging behind - walking on air maybe, but not on water.
A horrid thing all round but I tend to agree with Xorky that the more... immersive psyches are unlikely to be a good mix with drunk teens who are unlikely to know quite what they're in for. Bad Thing, bad publicity and a great shame these things keep happening for many reasons. But most of all family and friends. I guess if you're gonna go then it's at least colourful - they do say DMT's bodily purpose is to get you through the very beginning and very end of life with maximum peace and beauty. Don't think it's quite been proven yet but it's a nice idea.
Couldn't resist quoting that old chestnut to remind y'all that not all drug myths are totally made up - my uncle jumped out of a window and died on acid in the late 60s. The question's the same even when you know that these things do happen sometimes - only he knows whether he was trying out his new flying technique or just wanted to die smiling. He had so e serious mental health issues for a while but which is chick and which is egg? Will ask him as I fly on by to Elftown one day maybe.
