How close is USA to legalization?

you know, at the end of the day, as long as you are CAREFUL then you will never be caught. I mean, if you have a little grow cabinet to supply yourself, and you only smoke at your house/away from others.. then the chances of you are being caught as so fucking slim it doesnt even come into the picture.

this is true.

and it is also true that in all honesty it wont matter if its legal or not for alot of smokers bc - theyre gonna do it anyway.

but legalization does have its advantages for us recreational/casual users.

True I can carry an ounce and only get a ticket. Its a very half assed plan though. As of yet I don't believe there's a penalty in place if one doesn't pay said ticket. It'll probably trickle down to the registry like everything else I guess.

I think its about time that something change. Any change is a good one as far as weed is concerned. The more states that follow the better.

Let's all try and be safe and responsible with our smoking. The closer we get to legalization the more people will look to the smokers. We don't need a few bad apples spoiling the bunch. Imagine that world, where one day we could go out for a couple joints or buy headies like liquor...

Its true smokers are gonna do it anyway. It would just be nice if people saw it for what it was and instead of being looked down on by alcoholics. Being forced through legal bullshit that can fuck up your life such as the registry pulling your license for a guilty drug charge for a couple grams of weed just isn't right.

I also really don't want my tax dollars being spent hunting weed dealers. If I could count the number of kids under 25 that had cops pointing guns at em over weed...

Bottom line is the cops have better shit to do. Busting some pothead that's become a dealer creates a lot more harm than good IMO/E. Instead of being able to move on and grow in society now that person has a record or the other lost his job with his license or whatever. Put someone in a corner where they can't easily get the job they want and guess what... Crime, that's what. Who the fuck wants to work at subway when they can just sell drugs, they know they aren't getting the job they had when they caught the case.
 
Thats a tough question, I mean I live in Jersey and we just legalized it this past year, which I guess is a good thing but it didn't do much cause I still havent seen any medicinal pharmacies around yet. But I think saying 2-5 years is a little far fetched, no offense or anything, I just dont want to get my hopes up for something as important to my life as that haha. I would say 7-10 years away because, yet we still have a few states that have legalized it, we need more states to legalize it before we can bring it to Capital Hill. I think we have like 13 or 14 states right now, Im not positive about that but its somewhere around 12-14 but we need like more than half the country. I dont want to like sound like it will never happen but its a long ways away. Once our ignorant government leaders realize its medicinal value as well as its harmlessness, maybe we will be lucky enough to have it legalized. Actually, Im sure they already know how harmless and how helpful it is to everyone, Im starting to feel as if they are embarrassed to legalize it for some reason. I dont know, but if we stand strong and pray that a few more states come to legalizing it, it should be legalized country wide pretty soon
 
I see nationwide medical use as a much more optimistic goal than full blown legalization....

more and more states are going in favor of medical use. With enough states behind something federal laws can be ammended... Once this happens the DEA will have no more ability to fuck with patients or dispensaries... due to it being a federal issue over a state issue...
 
legalization

It depends totally on how long the economy is in the tank. People respond most consistently to pain, unfortunately, and if money's tight, paying to put pot smokers in jail will be very painful. This is what killed off prohibition 70 years ago, and it's what's going to kill the failed war on drugs.
 
hopefully within my lifetime as I'm 22 now and this would be good for the whole USofA

Wat you smokin yo? NJ Definately did not legalize marijuana. its still 100% illegal in NJ. I WISH wat you said is true but.....Definately not. whered you get that idea from?
 
California has a bill that has entered the assembly that would remove Cannabis from the CA controlled substances list and sets up a method of taxation and regulation of the sale. I doubt it will pass through the legislature and if it does it is sure to get a veto from Arnie.

But there is hope, 6/10 registered West coast voters would vote to legalize it according to polls. I believe that the bill in it's likeness will become a state proposition that year after it fails in the legislature. Once it is put forth before the voters who poll strongly for this issue, it WILL pass. Then the rest of the west coast will follow suit. As for the rest of the nation I don't know, but there is going to be a legal market of cannabis in this country in a decade, but not necessarily nationwide.

He probably got the idea from the recent progress in Jersey with legalizing medical marijuana. But we haven't even done that yet, and like you said, we certainty aren't even close to general legalization.

Throwing down seeds and watching a plant grow is one thing.. Growing dank bud properly, clipping it, drying it, and curing it to prepare to actually be smoked is another. Indoor grows require an investment for various equipment, outdoor grows require land, so on and so on.. There are a million reasons people won't want to grow after legalization.

I don't know where your getting the idea that just because people can grow something, that automatically means they won't buy it legally with a tax attached. Growing pot is easy, even growing good pot can often times be pretty simple and easy, but in general growing the good stuff is a pain in the ass. You must realize once legal, people won't buy pot to buy pot. They'll buy it for the quality and more importantly, the convenience.

very true. i mean, how many people grow their own vegetables? i know i can grow my own weed, but if i can spend twenty bucks to get something already processed and high quality - worth the expense imo.
 
Its going to be pretty much decriminalized everywhere in 10 or 20.. I could see it possibly being legalized around that time.

However, I'd think we would end up like England or Canada. where its downgraded legal wise and everyone looks the other way. This already happens in many places in the US, usually where its already decriminalized but not always.

That is what I think should happen on a state by state basis. Radical decriminalization. Allow adults to grow 5-10 mature plants for personal use, with no fines as long as they obey this number (or some other arbitrary number). Same effect as legalization as far as cutting down on black market profits. The feds. will be limited in their power since 99% of drug arrests happen on the state level and there is no commerce clause they can site to interfere with state law.

Also a new zogby poll puts nationwide support for legalization at 44%.

This bill won't be up for a vote for about a year, and Arnold will be out by then. One of the more promising gubnetorial candidates is San Fran's current mayor. He has stated on the record that he would pass the bill. Looks like those of you in Cali have some work to do to get this guy elected. The rest of the nation will fall in line once Cali legalizes.

So yeah, I fall in the 2-5 year crowd (if we keep fighting).
