Phenethylamines How can I purify 2C-B at home?

I usually just use a pipette for acetone washes because I found that the coffee filter lost me a lot of material the one time I used it.
But maybe I just used an unsuitable filter?

whatever works! There is frequently mechanical loss aka surface tax.
This was behind my point about effort unless it's a decent amount i.e. effort to scrape it off a coffee filter, but actually mechanical loss is really what this effort is pointing to

to Arrall's point, is there a better filter to use than a coffee filter for small amounts? kinda too easy to use them because they're so readily available.

and what's the minimum amount you'd bother washing this way?

There's a lot of beige and coffee colored 2cb thats tested at 50-70% out there.

Whatever the impurities are, theyre unpleasant. Trip isnt as euphoric or as much of a rush and the next day youre irritable instead of uplifted. Its a major difference.

I dont understand this charcoal thing. If my 100g of 2cb is 70% pure and i strip away 30% of my powder with the charcoal, doesnt it take proportional amounts of both the pure and contaminants?

so in that case i would be left with

49g 2cb
21g contaminants?

was there supposed to be more words here?
Probably, but lost to the ether ;)

So it all depends on how much you have as well as how much you are willing to lose.

Having proper equipment/supplies for different scales is pretty handy but not always practical. There is a lot of technique when it comes to most of these things as well. With proper technique and tools, mechanical loss/surface tax can be minimized.

Lets say you were trying to wash a pitiful amount of 2C-B, like 20mg (a single dose) and you wanted to minimize mechanical loss. I would probably take a coffee filter and place it on few paper towels. carefully place the 2c-b in the exact center of the coffee filter trying to use minimum surface area. pipette some cold acetone directly onto the powder. most of the acetone will move through the coffee filter. Fold the coffee filter and press it against the paper towel to squeeze any more liquid out. Open the coffee filter and using a spatula/dab tool/ toothpick? carefully scrape the powder onto some piece of slick paper that wont crinkle (maybe like a magazine paper) and reweigh it. Again, with good technique and proper tools loss can be minimized.

If one had a gram rather, place it in a clean beaker/shot glass and break it up as best as possible with a spatula. Pour i dunno, 15mL of cold acetone into the glass and using the spatula swirl the 2C-B so that it mixes with the acetone. Using another equally sized glass, line it with coffee filter. Pour the 1st glass into the 2nd glass, lightly pull up on the coffee filter so it isn't submerged. after most of the acetone has filtered through pipette just a little more to wash any dirty acetone off. Pull the coffee filter out, fold it, and press it against some paper towels. etc

If you're trying to do more bulk sized amounts, you might invest in a fritted glass buchener funnel or some other filtration device and scientific paper.

Anyway theres a million ways to skin a cat. Get creative!

thats exactly right and why activated carbon is not always the best option. It's not usually* very selective. Just do a cold acetone wash first... charcoal is best used when there is just a tiny bit of impurity as I stated before. If you're unsure of the process just do a tiny batch first to practice. Practicing on 100g is... risky if you don't know what you're doing.

sounds like placebo or speculation but what do I know.

Also your 21g contaminants would be absorbed onto the carbon along with 21g of your 2C-B. Theoretically.

My friend has some 2C-B wants to purify it at home. Despite the username he's not Walter White.

Is it possible to do with water or alcohol?

It's supposedly HCL poweder. Any tips?
find some DMT (since its legal in some parts of world i should be able get away with saying go find a different drug without violating rules here)

that 2CB dragon fly will kill you
and im talking lil specs like fent

PLEASE KNOW WHAT YA DOING WITH THIS

If ya dont know the story, i heard this on darkweb horror story podcast - party people went looking for 2CB, got 2CB Dragonfly
few died (few news articles too)
2C-B typically has an active oral dose range of 12 to 24 mg.
Bromo-DragonFLY is drastically more potent (and dangerous), active in the microgram range (often 0.2 to 0.8 mg)

Albeit 2C-B is a substance that has not been reported to cause deaths in medical literature - im against it bcuz the Bromine variant

thanks for taking the time to write this out, very very insightful and useful!

The incident you are referring to happened with Bromo-DragonFLY, which is the DragonFLY analog of DOB. The mix up was with 2C-B-FLY. The chance of obtaining Bromo-DragonFLY in 2026 when trying to acquire 2C-B is probably zero. You can of course feel free to ingest or not ingest whatever you like, but I do recommend basing these decisions on education. Generally damning everything with a 4-bromo substitution does not sound educated.

true to each their own, my bad and no disrespect intended to Shulgin

This is still the same ole acetone wash routine (without knowing what the cut is) routine: so lets just do this for every drug
1. look up the drug solubility in various organic and non organic solvents (Methanol EtOH Water etc)
2. Look up the polarity is polar non polar
3. Look up various organic/inorganic cuts that are commonly used along with your drug (and cross reference those solubility)

The orig. thread said no A/B so theres no turn it basic with lye, resalt with dry HCl vapors routine (which honestly A/B would be best way to purify that) and i mean purify as in getting rest of the cuts and impurities out. If the drug came off the line as 90% pure (its still 100% pure drug compound) "pure" refers to the mixture's purity and not a degradation of the drug compound itself

If ya want the polarity, and solubility, and few research materials - theres a HCl form and HBr and the phenethylamines derivative (Bromo Dragon Fly):

thanks for the warning I think most people on BL understand these are completely different substances. There is also a 2C-B-DRAGONFLY not that I want to confuse things even farther.
2C-B, 2C-B-FLY, 2C-B-DRAGONFLY, DOB, DOB-FLY, DOB-DFLY (bromo dragonfly).
Honestly there have been a few different mishaps one as recently as 2011. Good rule to always tests your substances even in 2026.

What is a typical cut for 2C-B btw?

I suppose I could have included an A/B process as well but I mainly included the 2 easiest ways for someone with zero lab experience/equipment to remove potential unknowns. Since gassing an organic solvent with dry HCL gas is potentially dangerous I did not include that technique. I really don't want some kid to kill/permanently disfigure themselves.

Geeze I dont even want to describe how to make a ghetto gasser, but i guess people here can google it if they like.

GHETTO GASSER--
The term refers to an improvised or makeshift apparatus used to generate hydrogen chloride (HCl) gas, typically in unregulated or illicit environments such as clandestine drug manufacturing.
Hydrogen chloride gas is a highly toxic and corrosive substance. When inhaled or brought into contact with moisture, it immediately reacts with water to form hydrochloric acid. This reaction presents severe health hazards, including:
    • Respiratory Damage: Inhalation of the gas causes immediate irritation and severe burns to the respiratory tract, coughing, shortness of breath, and potentially fatal fluid accumulation in the lungs (pulmonary edema). [1]
    • Chemical Burns: Contact with the skin or eyes causes severe chemical burns, tissue destruction, and permanent visual impairment. [1]
    • Physical Hazards: Improvised gas generators lack standard laboratory safety controls, pressure relief valves, and chemical-resistant materials. Consequently, pressure buildup within makeshift containers frequently leads to structural failure or violent ruptures, spraying concentrated acid and toxic gas into the surrounding area.

Here's a quote I just found from someone who "made their own" HCL tank?
"Regulators on HCl cylinders have a very bad habit off snapping off! One of my good friends had a very close call with a big HCl cylinder. Luckily he was standing right next to the door so the only thing that needed to be replaced was that particular lab. If you must have an HCl cylinder standing around I’d recommend a lecture bottle (see photo). These are (in theory) less likely to go off since they have a relatively short life time and if they go off they are likely to kill fewer chemists. Nonetheless, this particular HCl lecture bottle in my current lab has decided to corrode/fuse. "

Wait so the guy ONLY had to replace that particular lab?

I remember when i was a young inexperienced idiot taking a soda bottle a 1/4 filled with calcium chloride, dumping in a bunch of muriatic acid and quickly twisting on makeshift bottle cap with a plastic hose attached to it to gas like .3g of mescaline extract. My face was wrapped in wet towels.. Somehow I didn't die or burn myself but in retrospect that could have happened pretty easily.

You werent required to give any detailed A/B process unless ya felt so inclined to help the next person but if ya know of some tricks - all ears

But this comes down to few principals:
1. Get a drug supply or dealer you trust bcuz if you have to sit there and play clandestine with your product then the trust isnt there already
2. We play clandestine chemistry (mostly Acid Base chemistry in the drug design action world) and taking an impure bunch of stuff and trying to backyard purify it so to speak isnt 100% getting you 100% pure compound of choice outta the "dirty batch." Thats why I gave the warning and youre right shame on me for assuming one way or another what someone new out here

But there are A LOT of things i didnt really understand until i got deep into this synthesis stuff, and I always thought a simple A/B process, cleaner process, or catalyst process could net
you anything pure etc - hence labs use such real complex chemicals to get exactly what they wan,t out of or off of, and substance
Apologies for assumptions
We dont have these luxeries hence we use the same wash process (polarity, dissolution property, solubility property)

Back to the clandestine method no lab stuff

Watch Uncle Festers how to make crank video (for A/B on some PSE) and how he used sulfuric acid catalyst in some HCl (muriatic) and lil NaCl to get the dry Cl gas flowing - tubed into the vessel to make the HCl salt form
After ya watch that kitchen process ya may get even lil more understanding - not assuming what ya know or dont,

OR, electrochemistry: take table salt and water, (preferably non iodized salt) and hit that solution with electricity (can be 9v battery - take ya year) or 120V or 230V
thatll liberated Chlorine gas from the table salt

Where do we look up this information? I don't understand what you're saying about A/B.

google: researchgate and expensive labs that have done this research - if you google around for 2CB youll see certain universities have experimented and documented findings
some the chem is deep n dry

What i was referring with electrochemistry is describing how to source from scratch HCl (via dissolving into water) and from there more research leads to how to do Acid Base Chem (A/B) for basification and acidification salting

2CB specifically, research and research and more Ai and research cross checking and forums like this where people decided to take the dare into the energy shell unknown

He's saying a/b (acid/base). Using a partitioned system of an aqueous and organic phase, by modifying the pH certain molecules will want to migrate to one or the other phases (layers of liquid) this allows you to keep some molecules and remove others.

Generally unnecessary in the case of 2C-B as most of the impurities formed during it's synthesis are removed during it's process steps and the ones that do remain in the final product are typically soluble in alcohols/organics while 2C-B (when it's in a salt form) is soluble in aqueous phase. Simply powdering your 2C-B hbr/hcl and washing it with an organic solvent (acetone/isopropyl alcohol) like I described in my first comment will remove most of the impurities. If you have the HCL salt, it has already undergone an A/B anyway so another A/B would literally do nothing.

If you insist on using AI, use it as a tool but crosscheck everything because it is drawing on what humans say and humans say a lotta bullshit. Also doing things yourself is going to teach you a lot better than some book ever will.

-Edit- Honestly the final step of 2C-B is pretty elegant in my eyes when done with elemental bromine. It's messy but elegant. You take 2C-H freebase, and react it Br2. The bromine atoms disassociate, one of them kicks off the hydrogen at the 4 position of 2C-H, that hydrogen bonds to the lone bromine atom remaining to create HBr (hydrobromic acid) in situ which immediately forms a bond to the 2C-B's nitrogen creating a stable salt that can be washed with an organic to remove impurities and make snow white 2C-B.
I do think there may be some slight difference in absorption of 2C-B HCL vs HBR but the HBr is a fine molecule and doesn't require another transformation. That's just my opinion though.

use the HCl honestly imho, this 2CB aint my thing
But the ph buffering goes hand in hand with Acid base chem
As far as removing impurities, it all depends upon what cut they use
There are some cuts you can purify your way out of
And since we're dealing with A/B its the charged ionic forms of the molecule thats needed

"Generally unnecessary in the case of 2C-B as most of the impurities formed during it's synthesis are removed during it's process"

Thats too generalized, list the common cuts you refer to
Basic washing filtration removes the basic stuff, oils waxes sugars (and that still aint easy,) but if both compounds are soluble in whatever, youre not getting anywhere w/o crazy chemicals

List the common cuts that go with 2CB (both salt and freebase forms) then list which are soluble in which solvents
Youll see an overlap where youre stuck

Example:

1. Starting material: 50 g of Compound A at 90% purity
You have 50 g of laboratory-produced material 2-CB. It is 90% pure meaning it contains 90% desired Compound A (2-CB) and 10% impurities (crap locked into the ionic lattice or mingled in the free base form - nobody is a perfect yielding lab scientist)

At this stage, your material is 90% pure.

2. Adding 50g Sugar
You now mix the 50 g of starting material with 50 g of sugar.
Assuming no chemical reactions or material losses, the result is:
45% Compound A
5% original impurities
50% sugar

Sugar and 2-CB dont dissolve so well in acetone as we determined above. Now what ya do??
And assuming youre a super smooth lab chemist if ya did remove 100% of the cut Sugar binder, youre still always left with 90% pure 2-CB
The best ya can hope for is basify or acidfy and break it back to its ions and reform the salt lattice (HCl form) or freebase - but still, converting a compound to another ionic form does not automatically remove impurities.

yeah clearly 2c-b is not your thing. Not that it's never happened, but I've never seen 2c-b cut with sugar in my life. Where are you getting your info?
