Alcohol How can anyone get addicted to alcohol?

i thought the same thing until i got hooked on opiates then tried quitting. after the acute withdrawals were over, id drink loads for the anxiety, get a hangover and crack open a beer in the morning. you dont get hangovers if you drink all the time, and this is where a lot of people get hooked.
I was the same way. I never had any desire to drink until I tried to come off suboxone. After I got back from rehab I started polishing a 5th of Jim beam a day. It got so bad that I was drinking just to be able to leave my dorm room. That was one of the worst months of my life. If I hadn't got back on opiates I would have become physically addicted to drinking. Opiate withdraw will fuck you up and turn everything upside down.

Alcoholism is one hell of a beast. I used to wake up after 2 or 3 hours of sleep feeling mad anxiety and have to do a shot or three just to sleep a couple more hours. Even after going through that, multiple times in jail, ruined relationships etc., it still can be hard to stay away from the shit. doesnt help that its everywhere.

Most of the people on this site are poly-addicts. Meaning addicted to more than one thing. When I quit opiates and got on suboxone and the suboxone didn't give me any feeling at all. I started to drink. Massive amounts, like a fifth a day. Sometimes on a Friday I would buy a handle thinking this way i wont have to go back to the store this weekend, and then By Sunday morning I was out and I was stationed in GA at the time and lived off post so I couldn't buy more until 12:30, which was pure hell to me. The only thing that ever got me to stop all this madness was finally getting out of the army, going into rehab, going onto subutex, diazepam, and viibryd. I live a normal life now. Knowing I will be on some combination of these meds for the rest of my life. I was born dopamine deficient. D1 deficiency disorder. It is no wonder I started using at the age of 11. I can not feel normal without medication. now with the cocktail I am on I feel normal. and no lie a part of that is once a week I take double my normal dosage of the sub and the benzo to get a small buzz. Addiction ruined my life, my marriage, and just about everything else. But going to rehab getting on these meds and going to the VA for mental health care among other things. Has totally changed my life for the better.

You must not know how to drink then OP. Not every alcohol makes you sick and fucks you up.

You eat a big meal beforehand when you're drinking hard and then every 2 drinks drink 500ml water. Drink as much as you want, just with the water in between then go home, eat if you were out for more than 5hrs, drink ~litre of water then go to sleep.

Same with beer except I personally drink beer before I eat. Every 2 beers, 500ml water. Repeat till home. More water. Always wake up fine.

The moment you go to sleep dehydrated you'd wake up hungover, simple.

Tequila straight mixed with no other types of alcohol would not get you drunk neither. It is a very pure alcohol.
Most white drinks are easier to avoid hangover as well.

Then there's the fact that you should not be drinking any sugary drink with any type of alcohol. Mix with soda, water or fruit juice if there's no soda/water available.
Forget coke, sprite etc.. that'll just cause so much excess sugar in your liver that your body cannot process all at once. I believe the excess just goes to liver fat.

Just like with all other drugs, there are ways to do them.

Brown drinks, especially whiskey/bourbon, red rum fuck you up the most in the hangover department. Tequila is excluded due to purity.

well, some day I will give your drinking 500ml of water every 2 drinks a shot and see if it works for me, but I doubt it.

And what you said about white drinks being easier to avoid a hangover? so Vodka I'm assuming, well in my case Vodka gave me one of the worst hangover I've ever had and I am never drinking that shit again, I want to vomit just thinking about it and it has been 5 months since that..

And tequila definitely gave me the worst hangover of my life.. What I digest the best is Whiskey but after a while it made me vomit one time and after that I was never able to go back to drinking like before, I just get nauseous easily...

Plus I have zero intention of ever drinking again, I hate the taste, the smell and feeling like I just ingested poison.. Only thing I liked about alcohol was that it made everything more fun and I had a lot of fun for a while but it's a nasty drug

Man I fully agree that it is a nasty drug but I'm just trynna show you that it can be tamed. My best nights have been the ones where I've been moderately drunk so I can function quite well in the party/club. Usually switch to water once I get the slightest feeling of a spin.

White alcohol has less impurities as it usually isn't stored in barrels where the wood soaks into it, causing it to turn brown. I hear ya on the vodka bro! I literally can;t drink that shit. I always over do it. It's cuz of how easy it is to drink one usually over drinks.

I drank tequila straight from the bottle once when I was playing carnival in the hot sun and didn't feel drunk at any point in time. Killed the whole bottle. I for one have no real tolerance to alcohol.

Usually I can't smell alcohol when I'm hungover but a beer usually straightens me out lol.

But it's very good you're turned off of alcohol. It truly is a poison. I'm only 19 but I've found a way to tame it.
I stay away from whiskey, red rum, vodka and wine.

I drink beer, gin, white rum and tequila mainly. With cognac I just have one glass, same with champagne.

I wouldnt assume everyone gets hangovers and have bad nights when they drink......as a recovering alcohol i could slam straight whiskey finish a bottle and be ready first thing in the morning to drink some more obviously after some water intake....but once u get a love for the feeling its a monkey on your back.....and opiates sure are euphoric and etc but i always found them boring......thats just me.....so with alcohol i was able to do crazy shit that was fun half of it i dont remmeber but nothing bad....but i quit drinking for health reasons....i need my liver working for me....
But if you can control your drinking not drink everyday for days on in like i did or just enjoy a glass or 2 on the weekends it isnt a bad pleasure just dont mix it with anything thats where people play with fire.....

Also Gin is another form of hard liquor that actually has poison in it besides the alcohol its how its brewed from what i hear i could be wrong.....so yes some forms of drinking are more serious and harmful then others....ever heard of fireball whiskey? It is brewed with u wont bealive it coolant they put in refrigerator but the company says its such a small amount it wont do no harm.....just gota choose whats right for you and be wise about getting loaded other then that have a good time

Everyone picks there own poison. People got problems. And alot of people get into it because it's socially acceptable, cheap and easy to obtain.

ya thats the major reason why you see it spread all across the globe.....not to mention thousands of years of human documentation throughtout history.....but a glass or 2 of wine isnt bad for the heart.

You can say the same exact thing with Stimulants.

Meth, Coke, Rx Stims...
they all come with horrible comedowns that IMO are way worse than an alcohol hangover.

I've met all kinds of addicts. Meth addicts, heroin addicts, Rx drug addicts, alcohol addicts, etc.
They say once your body is tolerated to the drug(s) the comedown hangover kind of goes away...for example, a meth addict would experience severe come downs at the start..(I would say the first couple/few months), and obviously have a hard time eating/sleeping. But after your body is tolerated to the meth, you'll be able to sleep/eat while ON meth and your comedowns seem like nothing. It'll be pretty much exactly like an opiate addiction. You wont feel get into W/D's/Severe come downs until after you stop taking the drug(s).

Not everyone is the same. An alcoholic/meth addict can say the same about you, (how can this guy get addicted to opiates?)
Everyone has their DoC's. (Mine are also opiates)

I mean, look at drug Rehab's... Their are all different kinds of addicts, from Vicodin to Heroin, from Ritalin to Coke, and from Adderall to Meth, and a bunch of Alcoholics.

ive been told by many docs and people with exp and all have told me my 2 or 3 beers isnt enough to feel any major WD but i do get nasty anxiety once i go 24+ hrs after my last drink
which in turn leads me to crack open a beer and maybe its placebo but my anxiety melts away after i drink
see the vicious cycle ?

i wanna go back to detox an give it another go soon but its easier said than done like the first time i did it

It's all mental. There's no way you need to go to detox for drinking 2-3 beers a night. Not trying to be that guy, but c'mon! I've come off some pretty horrible benders cold turkey and while it might not have been the best I got through it. Unless your 2-3 beers are high gravity 40s I just think it's silly. All you need is some willpower imo.

It was easy. I started off using it as a social lubricant and became dependent on it to the extent that I couldn't socialize without it. After awhile, I found myself getting RLS, sweats, and tremors, especially in my legs and feet when I went without. I drank not because I wanted to, but because I needed to in order to feel normal.
