    Welcome Guest!

how bad is ecstasy for you, really?

I use to drink heavily every weekend. friday night just a few, then saturday night start at eight and finish real late. I never did any other drugs at that stage in my life apart from nicotine. I can't imagine going through those hangovers now. the pounding head, the feeling that at any moment i was going to puke and iwas almost certain that the neighbors cat had broken into my house and shat in my mouth while i was in my drunken sleep. Now i am certain there was a hell of a lot of damage being done to my brain. Now I don't drink and thankfully escaped those days relatively unscathed. As for ecstasy?(mdma and nothing else) I use once a fortnight, sometimes longer in between, one dose and there r very little discernable side effects. does this mean that mdma isn't causing any damage to my brain? I don't know for sure. If it is I can't tell from any physical symptoms

I had a really bad headache one day after having 1 pill on the weekend. Ive never felt anything that bad before, it felt like my brain was eating itself. That was in May and I havent had anything since. I also feel like an idiot not being able to remember simple things sometimes, and I am by no means a hard or even regular user.

Exactly! I use one pill once a month and I have horrible memory problems and I constantly feel cracked-out.

Thats why I am stopping for awhile.

If no-one has said this so far (i couldnt be bothered to read thru em all).. the holes in your brain shit come from a test the BBC (or someone) did where they THOUGHT they gave apes MDMA.. turns out it was MethAmphetamine..

WOW! So they dosed apes with the average recreational amount of what they believe is MDMA and it turns out to be METH!!

talk about psychosis8( 8(

I don't think it's dangerous to take E. It's probably like any other substance even aspirin that can cause an anaphylactic syndrome. There's always poeple have bad reaction.

The "holes in the brain" that are commonly refered to are called "Olney's lesions" and have never been proven or disproven to exist in humans. They've also never been associated with MDMA use even in animals (as far as I've ever known anyways) however people just love to say that something will put holes in your brain. After all, who really wants a hole in their brain?

Basically these are microscopic scars where a receptor site in your brain gets killed by the presence of a drug, a chemical released by a drug, or a transmitter becoming bound to a receptor it was never meant to bind to as the result of a drug. They have been shown (maybe? people will argue the validity of the study done) in lab animals exposed to very high doses of anaesthetics like DXM or ketamine.

the "holes in the brain" due to ectasy is false. well... it hasnt been proven or disproven really, like you said, but when the the "holes in the brain" rumor came around it was actually a methamphetamine study released as an MDMA study. And even then the doses of meth used to create the holes in the brain were sickening.

You're confusing two different studies :).

The "holes in your brain" study purported to show that heavy ecstasy usage caused reduced brain activity (this was mis-reported as being ACTUAL holes in the brain, by people who couldn't read the PET scans correctly) - see here

The study where they gave the apes meth by mistake - this was actually a study with monkeys, but you're right, they did give them meth instead of MDMA. The study supposedly showed that ecstasy could cause Parkinson's Disease (not holes in the brain). See here

Both studies, interestingly enough, conducted by the same guy.

That said, there is fairly ample scientific evidence that MDMA can cause neurotoxicity, as far as I'm concerned.

Guys: I think some of you need to settle down a little bit. It's quite clear that MDMA and alcohol are different drugs, and therefore affect different parts of the body differently. They also have completely different dosing regimes where damage occurs. I don't think anyone will ever win an "alcohol vs mdma" debate simply because there's so many differences, and because what is fine for one person is not for another.

A person who doesn't suffer too many negatives from one drug may suffer more from another. It all comes down to the individual: their genetics, their lifestyle, their choices, their environment.

this picture was shown on MTV saying that ecstasy puts wholes in your brain that when scanned look like this.
In reality, it turns out that this is a SPECT scan and althought i shouldnt say this for sure, im tired so i will: The areas with the holes, or the hollow areas are not actually holes/hollow, but they are representitive of places where there is decreased bloodflow.

If you had holes in your brain that big, you probably would not be alive, and if you were, you would probably not be a functioning human being.

SPECT studies shown decreases in blood flow to certain parts of the brain a few days after taking pills. However, these decreases appear to be transient: months after taking the pills, there is no detectable difference between controls and MDMA users.
