10 arrested in 'bath salt' investigation, raid
Jun 22, 2012 4:05 p.m.
Police say a month-long undercover investigation has led to the arrest of 10 people accused of dealing "bath salts".
Thursday, Friendswood Police and other law agencies simultaneously raided three smoke shops in Houston, one shop in Webster and another shop in an unincorporated part of Harris County. Investigators say their contacts reported illegal goods were being sold from those locations over several months.
Those arrested in the raid were charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. All were booked into Friendswood City Jail and later released on bond Friday morning.
Among those arrested was a store owner accused of selling "bath salts" from five businesses near Friendswood. In mid-June, "bath salts" were linked to one man's death in Galveston. Friendswood Police say they've had several incidents in connection to the drug in the past three months and often have to restrain suspected users and transport them to medical facilities.
The investigation also led to the seizure of tens of thousands of dollars worth of suspected contraband and $28,100 in cash. It's hoped the investigation and simultaneous raids will disrupt "the shell game being played in smoke shops that have illegal substances being sold in deceptive packaging, where it appears to be legal."
